Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp

Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp is the stuff kids’ dreams are made of.

Camping out beneath a galaxy of stars deep in the Sahara Desert was a dream come true.

There are many desert tours you can search for in Merzouga. However, for sleeping, this camp’s the perfect glamping desert experience.

The fourth place we’d visited during our Morocco road trip, I couldn’t wait to step on desert land.

A rush of excitement takes hold of you as you watch the terrain slowly transform from cement to sand.

What to expect at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp

It’s a surreal feeling as you step out of the car into Merzouga.

The area’s a far cry from the chaos of Marrakech, and even the remote village of Ait Benhaddou.

Merzouga is quieter, with fewer structures in sight, and with plenty more Berber people congregating in small groups.

For me, the surreal feeling in the pit of my stomach signaled something more.

It was knowing that I was about to embark on something I’d always wanted — but had been too nervous — to try.

Where to meet

A simple building with 2 rooms and a bathroom is the camp’s meeting point. It’s where you’ll leave your bags — and use the bathroom — before making your way to the camp.

Each group’s assigned a guide, who will explain the trip and answer any questions you may have. After a chat with ours at Caravanserai, he took us by jeep to the start of the Sahara Desert.

Alcohol in Morocco

The guide’s also helpful for asking questions about such subjects like alcohol.

We wanted a bottle of wine to have with our desert dinner, but knew beforehand that there wouldn’t be any.

Any kind of alcohol isn’t easy to buy in Morocco — with the exception of hotels and restaurants. Your guide may be able to help you with this, just be sure to give them enough time.

Camel ride at sunset

Once we were dropped off, we chose to journey to Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp by camel. We were also given the choice to go by ATV or car at an additional cost. However, for us, it was a no-brainer.

Waiting patiently and quietly with their Berber guide were 2 grand and, constantly chewing, camels.

A camel ride by sunset

The journey begins — Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp

As outlined in the itinerary, we began the 1-hour sunset camel ride to camp.

Watching our silhouettes in the sand dunes, with the sun setting in the distance is a memory I’ll never forget.

Our attentive, and softly-spoken Berber guide, led us on the most relaxing tour I’ve ever experienced. He also kindly offered to take our photo, and always made sure that we were okay.

By the end of the ride, my derriere was a bit numb (!) but the journey was well worth it.

Arriving at the camp

We reached our base just as the last glimmer of sunlight was on its way out.

Once you manage to get down from your camel, there’s a short walk up a sand dune to reach the other side.

If it’s easier, I suggest removing your shoes when walking up the dunes. It can be trickier than it looks, plus you also get to feel desert sand between your toes.

On the other side was a sight so spectacular, I had to pinch myself.

Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp is home to 7 luxury tents, as well as an intimate setting between the dunes.

From the tents to the outdoor lounge with seating areas and soft lighting, it was everything that I’d imagined.

On top of this, traveling in October, the climate was ideal, and I never once felt cold during our desert stay.

Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp tents

Being a glamping site, the tents are much larger, and sturdier, than regular camping tents. What’s more, they’re already up and ready for guests — something perfect for an urbanite like me.

Stepping inside the tent, the first thing you notice is the huge bed. King-sized, it’s almost impossible not to want to jump on it straight away.

The decor is minimal desert chic. Furnishings are simple yet elegant, such as the Moroccan style carpeting and bathroom.

Speaking of the bathroom, if you like showering near enough in the outdoors, you’ll love this.

The hot water runs perfectly, and they also provide shampoo if you need it. The tent also has electricity, but discourages using items like hairdryers, as it takes up a lot of energy.

Dinner at the camp

Dinner at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp — and breakfast too —is served in the main tent.

Dinner starts from 7pm, but it’s so relaxed, you can come when you’re ready.

To start, we had a traditional Moroccan soup, followed by an assortment of salads, chicken tagine, and fruits for dessert.

A highlight of the dinner, was when our guide appeared with a bottle of red wine for us.

Though he’d said he’d take a bottle for us earlier, we didn’t think he would have had enough time. Turns out he definitely kept true to his word.

Anything other than water isn’t included in the price, but you can buy (soft drinks) on site.

Live entertainment beneath the stars — Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp

Once dinner’s finished, the real fun begins outside with some live Berber entertainment.

Playing a selection of local songs, and using traditional instruments, we clapped, cheered and even danced along to the beats.

The music brought everyone together, crossing cultures and language. It was a special moment, and one I’d happily relive again.

The stars and sunrise

I didn’t get much sleep during our stay at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp.

The adrenaline and excitement of the evening, not to mention the other friendly people we’d met, kept me wide awake.

However, there was another great distraction for my lack of sleep: the mesmerizing and hypnotic night sky.

We found ourselves sitting on top of a dune and watching an orchestra of stars dance in the clear night sky.

If you’re lucky, you’ll catch sight of a few falling stars too.

It’s moments like this when you see the world at its beautiful best.

Calm, peaceful, and with the distant murmurings of camels, it’s what makes travel so worthwhile.

Sunrise in the Sahara Desert is equally impressive and begins around 6.20am.

Shake off any traces of sleep, dress in whatever’s nearest (jacket too) and don’t miss seeing the start of a new day.
