Madada Mogador boutique hotel — where your suite is bigger than your home

The coastal town of Essaouira sits peacefully on the west coast of Morocco, and is popular with tourists and locals too. With a stretch of sandy beach, it’s a summer holiday packed into a small town. However, I travelled there in October, with the weather still mild, and the sea breeze refreshing.

I was also lucky to secure accommodation in the chicest boutique hotel in town, Madada Mogador. Mogador was the former name of Essouira. The current name means ‘the little rampart,’ which refers to the fortress walls around the city. An excellent location, the hotel’s right in the heart of the walled city. Everything to see in Essaouira is within minutes’ walk of the hotel.  If you’re driving here, there’s a safe and secure parking area.

Small on the outside, big on in the inside

The entrance to Madada Mogador’s down a narrow alley, and just before the restaurant Le Table. From the outside, you’d be forgiven for not being overly impressed, but the best really is yet to come. The hotel shares its main door with another riad, but the entrance to Madada Mogador is up the stairs to the first floor.

Upon entering, I immediately recognised the boutique hotel welcome I’m usually accustomed to. The reception area’s intimate and quiet — just how I like it. We were then led through the kitchen area (unusual but unique) to our room.

Now when I say room, I use this word very loosely. When we stepped inside, our mouths dropped, and our eyes opened up. To sum it up, the ‘room’ is the size of a generous-sized apartment, which to my disappointment is far bigger than my own!

Madada Mogador: the room within the suite

There are only 8 types of accommodation available here, so you have to be quick on that mouse if you want to book. There are 2 standard rooms, 2 ocean view rooms, 1 superior room, 1 junior suite, and the prize bull, the loft-suite. To our delight, we opened the door to find a huge loft suite for our stay in Essaouira. This is a brief rundown of what you’ll find here:

  • Living area
  • Dining area
  • Kitchen
  • Desk/work space
  • Separate toilet/bathroom on the ground floor
  • Staircase leading up the master bedroom
  • A second bedroom with en-suite bathroom and amenities

If that’s not all, the suite has floor-to-ceiling windows allowing in plenty of natural light.

It’s easily big enough for 4 people, or even 6, as the sofa’s a good size too. Whether a short, or long-term stay, it’s an ideal hotel when in Essaouira.

The best seafood restaurant in town

If you can, I’d urge to book a table at the hotel’s restaurant, La Table by Madada. It’s not only just downstairs, but it’s one of the highest rated seafood and fish restaurants in Essaouira. Being right by the harbour, you can literally smell the freshness of the catch once you step out into the alley.

Unfortunately, we were too late to secure a reservation, so sadly didn’t get a chance to find out what others were raving about online.

Breakfast on the terrace

A new day, and we left the suite, hungry, and ready to explore the sights of the city. You can choose to have breakfast on the terrace, or in the seating area inside. With the sun already shining brightly before 9am, it was a no-brainer deciding where we wanted to eat.

Overlooking the sea and having breakfast was pretty much an ideal way to start the day. However, the only downside was the swarm of bees also trying to compete to eat my breakfast!

Still, it didn’t distract too much from the experience, plus the endless views of the sea compensated for everything. If you are afraid of bees, stick to having breakfast inside, and maybe just enjoy your coffee on the terrace!

The verdict

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Madada Mogador, and would highly recommend it to others planning on visiting Essaouira. From the personal service, to the elegantly designed suite, it’s one place where you’re sure to feel at home.

Have you stayed at Madada Mogador? Did you also stay at the mammoth loft-suite? Let me know in the comments below!
