Sardinia summer holidays – 5 reasons why you absolutely must visit

When you think about what makes a great summer, the words sun, sea and sand probably come to mind. A summer in Sardinia offers all of this and a whole lot more. If you’re looking for great food, wine, and a rich cultural heritage, look no further.

A memorable Sardinia summer is within your reach; all you have to do is visit.

Why you should visit Sardinia in summer

The weather in Sardinia

While the sun shines upon Sardinia all year round (approximately 250 days a year), the months of June and July are a great time to visit.

The change from spring to summer provides the best natural heater for the waters surrounding the island. What you get are perfect temperatures for bathing, swimming and water sports.

Sardinia weather in July can reach 29°F/84°F – depending on location. That said, be sure to have plenty of sun lotion ready, and don’t forget your hat and sunglasses.

Sardinia summer - beaches

The beaches

You’re spoiled for choice for beaches in Sardinia, given its many sandy shores and hidden coves around the island. The north-east of Sardinia, Costa Smeralda, is a region renowned for its beaches and charming villages.

Rena Bianca offers visitors clean waters and spectacular views (Corsica is to the north). Awarded a ‘blue flag’ beach status, Rena Bianca is clean and well-maintained. It’s also fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable visit.

I loved visiting Sardinia, and met some like-minded people as a solo traveler on a guided tour. It made such a difference to my travels, and would highly recommend others to try it.

The food in Sardinia

I’ve yet to meet anyone who dislikes Italian food. Summer eating in Sardinia is fresh, well-balanced and healthy. Many dishes draw on traditional ingredients such as the island’s range of cheese, seafood, meat and vegetables.

Although Sardinia’s surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll find many meat dishes as well as seafood. Sink your teeth into a pasta salad made from Fregola (a texture similar to couscous).

Alternatively, you may like to try a spicy fish soup typical of the Cagliari area in the south called Sa Cassola, or the iconic roasted pig.

The wine route

Great temperatures and fertile lands make Sardinia an ideal place for wine production. With 16 DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wines, the most difficult dilemma is choosing which wineries to visit.

Cantina Calasetta is a good place to start, but is one of many. Don’t leave without sampling a glass of the Cannonau di Sardegna, probably the island’s most popular export.

The sights

Sardinia’s an island filled with must-see landmarks. Visit the UNESCO heritage site Su Nuraxi di Barumini, medieval villages at Castelsardo or sandy beaches like Tuerredda Bay in the south.

You can find impressive views along the trekking paths bordering the edge of the coastal cliffs of Ogliastra in the east. In short, it’s an island filled with endless photo opportunities.
