What to see in Aït Benhaddou in 1 day
Last updated on February 3rd, 2026.
There are many places I've visited on my travels where it's not been possible to see everything in 1 day.
The same doesn't apply to the historic village of Aït Benhaddou in the center-south region of Morocco.
A fortified village in a remote area of the country discover what to see in 1 day in Aït Benhaddou.
A UNESCO heritage site since 1987, the area itself is pretty sparse. Long and dusty winding roads connect a cluster of small towns.
Where to stay in Aït Benhaddou
We decided to spend the night in Aït Benhaddou as part of our road trip around Morocco.
Despite its remote surroundings, we found several very affordable, and elegant, accommodations to choose from. We settled on the charming Riad Tamdakhte given its close proximity to Aït Benhaddou.
However, Riad Tamdakhte wasn't our first choice.
We were hoping to secure a room at the nearby boutique hotel Caravane. Unfortunately, all the rooms were fully booked during that time so we opted for our second choice.
Thankfully we made the right choice with our accommodation. The staff at Riad Tamdakhte were welcoming, friendly and made us a delicious Moroccan lentil dish and side salads for dinner.
What to see in 1 day in Aït Benhaddou
Visit the village before Aït Benhaddou
Like with many popular attractions, the earlier you visit, the better. And arriving at Aït Benhaddou at 8.30am was an ideal time to arrive.
The sun had yet to reach its full peak and there were few people on site.
Maybe it was the time of our visit, but we didn't encounter many tourists when visiting Aït Benhaddou. There were some tour groups around, but not to the likes of those we experienced in Marrakech or Fes.
At the time of our visit, there were no designated parking spaces to visit Aït Benhaddou.
Instead, we parked on the roadside, from which we'd pass through the 'newer' villages to reach Aït Benhaddou.
We smiled and nodded at the locals as we walked through their villages. Rural and rustic, we had to watch our steps, making sure to not slip on the uneven paths.
Eventually, we caught a glimpse of Aït Benhaddou in the distance. The fierce blues of the sky created a striking contrast against the yellowy-reds of the stone village.
How to get to Aït Benhaddou
We were informed by several locals that we needed to cross the bridge to reach Aït Benhaddou. The only problem was we just couldn't find it.
We later found out that we needed to follow the main path from the village until we saw the bridge.
Another alternative was to enter any of the restaurants overlooking the river. From here, you could walk down the steps to cross over to Aït Benhaddou.
During our visit, the tide was low and we spotted several visitors crossing over via a stony path.

Explore the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou
You get a sense of the old meeting the new as you clamor your way up through the village.
We passed by homemade market stalls with locals selling everything from scarves to paintings. Not anything like the pushier sellers in the souks of Marrakech or Fes it was a pleasant introduction to Aït Benhaddou.
As we continued our exploration, we unwittingly wandered into one of the villager's homes. We'd later find out that there were four families that still lived and worked here in Aït Benhaddou.
A warm welcome
Our host was more than happy to show us inside his home.
While it was basic — as you might expect — it had a kitchen, living area and everything they needed.
I felt a pang of guilt thinking about the luxury riad we’d stayed in in Marrakech in comparison to his simple abode.
Yet, his upbeat nature revealed no signs of sadness or wanting. He proudly showed off his new gas stove, and to his credit, the view from his terrace totally eclipsed ours.
Once the tour was over, he told us that he and his wife made a living selling clothing and accessories.
While we didn't feel pressured to buy anything, there was an oversized emerald blue scarf that caught our eye. Something we both still use to this day, it also came in handy during our glamping experience in Merzouga.
Get to the top of Aït Benhaddou
As we said goodbye to the seller and continued our journey, we came across many narrow corridors and steep steps.
In these crowded moments, it was easy to forget the amount of ample space you could find in and around Aït Benhaddou.
As we neared the top, we passed a Berber musician playing a traditional instrument. The soothing music was a fitting reminder of where we were and the rich cultural heritage of the local people.
A moment to savor
At the top it was pleasantly quiet, with far-reaching views stretching across the arid land.
There was no birdsong or idle chatter, just the sound of your heartbeat and the quiet landscape.
We took photos of the views, the architecture and the nature and without anyone in the way.
The climb to reach the top of Aït Benhaddou had been totally worthwhile.
Tours to visit Aït Benhaddou
Group tours are ideal if you don't plan on hiring a car and driving in Morocco.
Tours are also a great way to learn about the places from an experienced guide and to be in the company of like-minded travelers.
Some tours to consider booking include:
- 3-day Sahara tour to the Erg Chebbi Dunes (starting point Marrakech)
- Day trip to Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou from Marrakech
- Overnight Sahara tour to Zagora and Aït Benhaddou
Tips on visiting Aït Benhaddou
- 1 to 2 hours exploring Aït Benhaddou is more than enough. We spent a lot of time taking photos and admiring the scenery than anything else.
- Be respectful of the villagers' homes. It may be a bit of a culture shock when you first see how they live. However, be kind, open-minded and embrace the differences.
- Wear appropriate footwear when visiting Aït Benhaddou. There are plenty of steps inside the old village and some can be quite slippery.
- Women should dress appropriately even in hot weather. Aït Benhaddou is in a remote part of Morocco and is more conservative than the cities. We hardly saw any Moroccan women when walking through the 'newer' village. The ones we did see were covered up.
- Have a drink at one of the riverside restaurants after the walk back down. It's your chance to have a refreshment break as well as grab one more view of the landscape before leaving.
Our experience at Aït Benhaddou is one of my top 5 most memorable outdoor travel moments. There are enough things to do in 1 day in Aït Benhaddou to constitute a half-day trip and you'll be glad you visited.

I travelled in Morocco for three weeks but did not make it to Aït Benhaddou (although it was on the wish list). I wanted to spent the night there. Had I known, that it is perfectly doable in a day trip, I might have gone. Well, next time.....

Ait Benhaddou looks a lovely place for a weekend break. You surely had a pretty fun outing with all the beautiful landscapes to give company.
We did, and highly recommend it!
I love the contrast between the stones and the colourful clothes. The fact that it's really quiet also called my attention, sounds like a dream indeed 😉
Totally! And so colourful too
Another awesome travel experience! Love reading your travel stories dear. I am amazed by this life experience and lifestyle you have.
Aw thank you! You should consider visiting too, it's really beautiful

That looks so beautiful. I would love to see that in person some day. All those views sure are amazing.
It's very beautiful Kathy, and so peaceful too
That is gorgeous. i love history and going to amazing landmarks like this. I'd also love to visit Morocco one day.
Then you really must go and visit; there's plenty of places like this in Morocco
Ait Benhaddou has such an amazing vibe. I can't believe how detailed the structures look & the care that's put into the making of the houses.
It's very beautiful, and a nice change from the chaotic cities too
Morocco has been on my bucket list for so long, it looks like such a beautiful country. It's great to come across places that are not overcrowded with tourists too!
Absolutely, I hope you visit one day
This looks like it would be such an amazing trip. I love that you have made it clear what you can do in just one day!
Thanks Becca! Think about visiting one day
The place look amazing! I haven't heard about Ait Benhaddou. I hope I can visit this place soon!
So do I, it's beautiful here
This is so awesome! I would love to explore the small villages in Morocco one day, just like you did, quite an adventure.
I hope you do Chad, it's quite a place
Morocco is definitely on my bucket list. Your photos are stunning
Thank you!
I have never heard of Ait Benhaddou. I always like going places that aren't as well known and with less tourists though. It's so nice you got to see your host's home.
It's an incredible place to visit, and not as busy as other places in Morocco
What a beautiful city to visit! The buildings and structures are amazing, it is crazy to see what different villages can do with the natural resources around them.
Ait Benhaddou is really incredible, and worth visiting when traveling in Morocco too
Oh wow! That is such an amazing place. It's like stepping back into time.
It definitely has that feel 🙂
what gorgeous photos! The views there are just insane! So gorgeous!
Thank you! It's a lovely village in Morocco
Morocco looks amazing! I almost booked a trip there last year but due to work wasn't able to and have been dreaming of it ever since. I'm dying to get there one day!
Aw you have to go! It's so interesting, and I encourage you to get out of the cities to places like Ait Benhaddou
Ahhh I'm dying to make it back to Morocco! And I love that you found less touristy spots. A road trip might be the perfect option for us- I hadn't even given that a thought. Would love to see these gorgeous locations in real life!
You must visit if you ever return! It's an amazing landscape to see 🙂
I haven't heard of this place before and its amazing that you've got a chance to visit it. It has a unique beauty. Would you know if it feel so cold during nighttime?
It definitely dropped in temperature at night. We were there in October and I'm glad I had some layers.
What a beautiful and serene place to visit! Seeing the living area inside one of the homes in the village gave me goosebumps. Morocco is definitely on our list to visit now!
Wonderful to read! I'm sure you'll have a great time 🙂
I am happy to know that it is possible to see and do quite a number of things in just one day. We're off to Morocco early next year and would love to visit Ait Benhaddou.
I just bookmarked your post. Will try to research more on where we can stay.
Great! Let me know if you need some accommodation tips 🙂
I haven't visited Morocco yet and haven't heard of this place before. But I wouldn't mind visiting this place one day 🙂 Your photo's are amazing btw!
I hope you get to one day, it's such a cool country! And thank you 😀
You got me at UNESCO heritage center. I love these kind of places which take you back in history. so nice that you got to follow the locals and got a sneak peek into their lives. Good helpful tips be it about reaching the place or about dressing.
It's incredible, and we're so happy we made it there!
Wow, your photos of Ait Benhaddou look so incredible! I'm visiting Morocco in just a few weeks and I wish I could see this while there, but I'm only visiting for 5 days this time around. I'll definitely be adding this to my list for my next trip to Morocco!
That's a shame! But I'm sure you'll enjoy it nonetheless 😀
I always knew Morocco to be an exotic tourist destination but your blog post tells me that it is a kaleidoscope of colors! I particularly admired the way your interaction with the villagers happened. As a strong believer of cultural exchange, I feel that you have achieved the top notch cultural experience of the travel destination! Thanks for an amazing description and an amazing read!
Thank you for commenting, Morocco is an incredible country, and this city is worth seeing.
That first photo took my breath away, wow! Despite Ait Benhaddou being a World Heritage Site, I'm glad you found some areas that you could visit that had barely any tourists. Also, it must have been such a treat that your host gave you a glimpse into his home and everyday life. Side note: I was thinking about booking this great deal to Morrocco yesterday. Hmmm, maybe this is my sign to go for it?! 😛
Ha, I think it's a great sign! We loved our journeys around Morocco and know you will too 😀
Love this post -- and it's so nice to see you can still get off-the-beaten-path in Morocco....so off the path that you wander into someone's home! Too funny 😉 But I bet that was a special part of the day. Beautiful pics too -- and I'm sure the blue scarf just added to the desert scenery!
Thank you so much! We really enjoyed our time here, and walking into someone's home was very random, but he was open and friendly too.
It's so lovely to explore somewhere without being surrounded by tourists - it sounds like a big change from Marrakesh! The desert views are beautiful, I love the colour of the sand - although I'm sure it is much better in the morning as you said without the full heat of the day!
Yes! It became so scorching hot, almost unbearable. Get there early to avoid the large groups and have the view to yourself 🙂
It's kinda far from what I used to know in Morocco, the Marrakesh. But I think 1 day is enough to spend in this beautiful city. It's really a helpful post!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful 🙂
Marvellous photography Lisa. Its simply fab about knowing Africa through your eyes. And the name i'm hearing now is simply mindblowing. Extremely cool destinations.
If ever you have a wishlit to write a travel blog on rural India i would.love to be your next door guest blogger, I can assure you to show different facets of rural tranquil India with the eyes of a serene travel trekker.
And last best of luck for such epitomic travel blogs. Don't stop blogging ever never, coz its inspirational for other bloggers to see such beautifully decorated travel blogging silo structure maintained in this blog juxtaposing with awestruck photography sense.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's very encouraging, and makes me want to continue 🙂 I've not yet been to India, but it looks like an incredible country! I'll definitely let you know if I need some guest bloggers, thank you again!
That's great that you were able to avoid large groups of tourists. I bet it was humbling to see how little your host lives with in his home. Most travelers don't get the opportunity to see where the locals live in a place like this.
I agree. Most places in Morocco are now full of souvenir stalls and sadly Ait Benhaddou is one of them. Still, it's worth visiting, and meeting the locals.
Wow this place look amazing! I heard a lot about Ait Benhaddou, Morocco on my list and hope I will visit soon
I hope so too, it's a great place to visit.
Morocco seems like such a beautiful place to explore! The landscape is so dramatic and the buildings seem to be so full of history. You really highlighted a gorgeous destination in Benhaddou and I hope to take it in, in person some day!
You must Aisha, it's an incredible country, and Ait Benhaddou is an amazing place to see.
I've never heard of Ait Benhaddou before, but I did visit Morocco a few years ago, and thought it was a really interesting country. I spent time in Fez and a few days in Marrakech - still so much to explore though, obviously! Gonna add Ait Benhaddou to the list for when I head to Morocco again x
Aw that makes me so happy to read! Ait Benhaddou is so worth visiting, and you'll really be in awe of the old fortified village!
I haven't heard Ait Benhaddou before. This is a kind of place where I would love to visit and spend some quality time. The ruins look like one of the ruin town in Rajasthan in India. I loved the photographs. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, I've never been to India so that's interesting to read!
Morocco is incredible country which is a comfort zone for every explorer lover. Thank you for sharing.
This is offbeat travel at its best. I had not even heard of Ait Benhaddou before reading this blog. No wonder this place was bereft of tourists. That said, I would love to visit Marrakech also.
You won't be disappointed! It's a wonderful place to see, and is off the beaten track.
I have never heard of Ait Benhaddou but I can see why you can easily spend a day here. Its beauty is incomparable to anything I've seen before. I also like how it is not as touristy and busy, giving you more time to walk around and learn about this village.
You're spot on Cat! It's spectacular here, and I encourage other travellers to get away from Marrakech and see it for themselves 🙂
Ait Nehaddou does looks very fascinating. I agree, it's one of those places you can def do in 1 day though. It looks like it's a great spot for taking photos. I feel hey can do a little more about such a historical site to boost its presence though.
Actually it's so nice there aren't many tourists here! It's historical yes, but also many rural people still live and work here too.
This place looks so amazing. What a cool experience it must have been to be hosted by a local and really step foot into how they live. Glad you found your way across the bridge.
It's an incredible place and one I recommend all to see!
I'd never heard of the UNESCO site, Ait Benhaddou before. From your images it ddoes look like a worthwhile trip to take. I bet sunset was amazing there so an overnight sounds perfect. Finding the bridge sounds fun, I hope it wasn't too hot!
It wasn't hot at all! Lucky we went earlier before the sun got too hot. There are so many photography opportunities too!
I am planning on going to Morocco next year and I will make sure to add Ait Benhaddou to my travel itinerary. I love non touristy places and this old village inspired me exactly this. The views are beautiful and it's great that you can learn about the culture of the country and how people are living there. It's so nice of your host to show you inside his home.
It was such a lovely experience, and the host was so warm and welcoming. We didn't want to intrude too much, but he was more than willing to show us around.
I wasn't aware of this place Ait Benhaddou. I am glad to know about such offbeat place. I am surely going to pay a visit there once I am in Morocco. Thanks.
You're welcome, I hope you get to visit one day.
I love that Ait Benhaddou is for the most part off the main tourist map. The fact that you felt you could enjoy this location at your leisure surely must count for a lot, albeit that there may not have been much to see relative to the rest of Morocco. Your description and photos certainly convey a lot and it really looks like a place I would love to visit, even if not for that long.
Thanks Nicole for your comments, I really appreciate it! I highly recommend visiting, as it's really unlike any other place in Morocco, and not overcrowded with tourists either. If you see the other tourists, they're all so respectful and calm too! A nice change from Marrakech.
This is my first time hearing about Ait Benhaddou! It's nice to read someone write about Morocco, and not just about the fancy riads and Chefchaouen. I'm adding this to my list when I visit Morocco. That's really sweet of the villagers for showing you around their home!
Thanks Ivy! It's a wonderful place to visit, and like you said, miles away from the glamour of Marrakech or Chefchaouen. I'd love to read your write-up when you visit.
First of all, I haven't even heard of Air Benhaddou. So thanks for introducing it to me and thanks for the virtual tour. Looks like the entire town is frozen in time! Totally my kinda place to visit. When I plan Morocco, I wouldn't miss this!
You won't be disappointed, it's a wondrous place with great people and a rich landscape.
So you know I mentioned that I'm considering going to Morocco for NYE I think I'm going to be there from the 28th to the 5th. I would love to get down to Ait Benhaddou for a visit, do you think it's do-able? What I mean is I haven't looked at anything yet, how far away from Marrakesh is it? This would seriously be a great day trip, I don't know what it is but seeing like dusty mountain side towns really excite me and me and my friend would have a field exploring Ait Benhaddou 😀 (sharing this post to him now :D)
Thanks Amit, that's so kind of you! It was around a 3 hours drive from Marrakech, but when we were there, the drive through the Atlas mountains at first was stunning, but after an hour, it felt like it would never end! Also, there seems to be constant construction in the mountains which delayed our journey too. If you have time, I'd highly recommend visiting!
My biggest memories of this place are the beauty... and the heat! We visited on a group tour en route to the Sahara Desert, but your way sounds much more relaxing! It must have been a great place to wander around on an impromptu photo walk!
It wasn't impromptu, but yes it was the best photo shoot I think I did in Morocco!
We visited Morocco in 2015 but only in Tangier. Ait Benhaddou looks less of a hassle. I would probably enjoy it more!
You really would! I didn't get to Tangier, but I already know this place was better 😀
As a student of heritage studies, I'm heaven reading this and looking at the pictures. That was so lovely of the local villager to show you around inside his home ☺
He was so nice and very inviting too. It teaches us so much about how closed we are (and our doors) in the west!
I like the old charm of Ait Benhaddou. The confluence of old and new surprised me. Good the old is still maintained that way. What a humbling experience to visit the local's house! Felt good to read how he seemed content in that set up.
Yes, he was very happy and so humble too. It really made the experience worthwhile.
It always an amazing experience to explore places which are far from the crowded touristy places and which we have read about some n times. We were in awe of Ait Benhaddou with the first picture of the orange-red town on the slopes of the hill. The village indeed looks like straight out of a fantasy land. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful place with us.
Thanks guys for your lovely comments! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and really hope you can make it yourself here one day 🙂
Honestly i have never heard of this place but it looks stunning..
i always like one day guide as with full time job we need to make most out of it..loved reading it..thanks for
Thank you, I appreciate you stopping by!
I'm really loving your Morocco series and it's tempting because the more I read, them more I want to visit. I love how rustic it is and also that you stepped outside the main cities and explored other lesser known or written about regions. The topography of Ait Benhaddou is just so grand, would love to spend some time there with my camera.
Thanks Raghav, that's very kind of you to write! It's an amazing village, and probably one of my favourite places we visited in Morocco. A real must see.
Ait Behaddou is so earthen brown. I have not really been to this part of the world so pardon my ignorance and i understand the ground desertish but the houses, fort and even the bridge matching these colors gives such a unique aura to this place. It is so offbeat and makes me want to see more of such places
No ignorance, so don't worry! You're totally right about the style and colour of the village; and yes, it's very offbeat 😀
I love the stone villages and anything on a hillside or mountainside, it's so unique and beautiful. Thanks for thanks for sharing <3
You're welcome, thanks for dropping by!
Wow I love the pictures! And yea, it doesn't look at touristy as Marrakech. You say you did a road trip in Morocco, would you recommend to rent a car and drive around?
Thank you! I did, that post's coming soon! Put it this way...there are some ups, but many downs!
The inside of that home you visited really made me feel how travel opens up your eyes to the ways of life of others in this world. I couldn't imagine living at a place like that but some people do. I'm sure, like you said, they were happy and content but it just really made me think about what I have (not that what I have is better because they can also think they have it better than me but that it is just different) and be thankful for it.
Thank you Justine for your thoughtful comment. I think it's so easy to forget and take for granted how lucky we are, or how differently we live, from others in rural areas. Still, Ait Benhaddou is beautiful in its own right and very worthy of a visit!
As this place is offbeat destination, I would surely visit Ait benhaddou. Small village with no trees and people living in unique houses would looks unique and photogenic. Morocco is really a beautiful place to explore and you are not missing even minute details of Moroccan culture.
Thanks Yukti, it's a beautiful place, and I do recommend others to visit Ait Benhaddou 🙂
The lack of tourists would be a big plus for me to visit Ait Benhaddou. Cool you got see village life and inside one of their homes. Great tips on how to dress and taking photos there. I know I would love this place and Morocco is definitely on my bucket list!
Thanks Vanessa, that's so encouraging to read. I hope you get to visit for yourself one day!
Ait Benhaddou's is new to me but spending a day here would be nice. Exploring somewhere totally different and new excites me. And yes, that landscape is just too too 'must not miss.' I can imagine the peace that accpanies living in such a village not populated with the whole modernisation. Morrocco is beautiful if not the sun issh.
You're absolutely right. It's more rural here and you get a feel of the 'real' Morocco. Don't get me wrong, there are many stalls selling goods, but it's not overwhelming.
Thanks for this incredible suggestion for a day trip whilst driving around Morocco. I'd never heard of it before but it looks simply amazing in your photos! Now I feel I must visit it. But I like how you have forewarned that its really a no more than 1 day place, brutal honesty saves wasted time!
That's me, I'm pretty direct! It's a great place to visit, and worth it as you can see from the photos. But yes, 1 day is enough!
All this is absolutely mind blowing. You make it sound much more 'Moroccan' than these trips to standard touristy places like Fes or Marakesh, just like you said. I've been to Morocco many years ago and still remember the tours into the desert and to the oasis - just beautiful. Your pictures make me all dreamy.
Thank you Renata, I really appreciate your comments! It's a beautiful place, and I try to cover places that aren't so commercial - of course sometimes it can't be helped 🙂
This place looks stunning. I had never heard of it before, but it definitely spiked my interest! Still have to go to Morocco, so will make sure to add it to my list of places to see !
Thank you Wallis! It's a stunning town, and with few tourists too; I highly recommend it!
