1 night at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp
Last updated on February 3rd, 2026.
Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp is the stuff that traveler dreams are made of.
I'd always wanted to try camping out beneath a galaxy of stars in the Sahara Desert and my dream had finally come true.
There are many desert tours you can search for in Merzouga. However, for sleeping, this camp makes the perfect desert glamping experience.
The fourth place we’d visited on our Morocco road trip, I couldn’t wait to set foot onto the desert.
What to expect at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp
We felt a slow rush of excitement as we watched the terrain slowly transform from cement to sand.
Merzouga is a far cry from the chaos of Marrakech and even the remote village of Ait Benhaddou.
It's quieter, with fewer structures in sight and with more Berber people congregating in small groups.
Where to meet
A simple building with 2 rooms and a bathroom marked the camp's meeting point in Merzouga. We left our bags and used the bathroom before making our way to the camp.
Each group was assigned a guide, who explained the trip and answered any questions we had. After a chat with our guide at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp, he took us by jeep to the start of the Sahara Desert.
Getting alcohol in Morocco
Our guide was also helpful for answering our questions we had on alcohol.
We'd wanted a bottle of wine to have with our desert dinner, but knew beforehand that there wouldn't be any.
It's not easy to buy any kind of alcohol in Morocco — with the exception of hotels and restaurants. Our guide was able to help with our request but we gave him enough time to do so.
Camel ride at sunset
We made the journey to Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp by camel. There was also the choice to go by ATV or car at an additional cost but for us, our minds were already made up.
Waiting patiently and quietly with their Berber guide were two grand and, constantly chewing, camels.
The journey begins
As outlined in the itinerary, we began the 1-hour sunset camel ride to camp.
Watching our silhouettes in the sand dunes with the sun setting in the distance is a memory I’ll never forget.
Our attentive, and softly-spoken Berber guide, led us on the most relaxing tour I've ever experienced. He also kindly offered to take our photo and always made sure that we were okay.
By the end of the ride, my derriere was a bit numb but the journey was well worth it.
Arriving at the camp
We reached our base just as the last glimmer of sunlight was on its way out.
Once we'd managed to get down from our camels, we made the short walk up a sand dune to reach the other side.
Taking the opportunity to feel the sand between my toes, I removed my shoes to walk up the dunes.
On the other side of the dunes was a sight so spectacular I'd to pinch myself.
Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp is home to 7 luxury tents, boasting an intimate setting between the dunes.
From the tents to the outdoor lounge with seating areas and soft lighting, it was everything that I’d imagined. Traveling in October, the climate was ideal, and I never once felt cold during our desert stay.
Map of Morocco
Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp tents
Being a glamping site, the tents are much larger, and sturdier than regular camping tents. Already set up for the guests the only thing we'd to do was go inside.
Stepping inside the tent, the first thing we noticed was the huge bed. King-sized, we had to stop ourselves from wanting to want to jump on it right away.
The decor was minimal desert chic, with traditional furnishings throughout the tent and Moroccan carpet lining the floor.
The bathroom had hot running water and the camp provides shampoo if you forgot to bring your own.
Tents come with electricity but they discourage guests from using items like hairdryers. These take up a lot of energy and electricity is sparse in the desert.
Dinner at the camp
Dinner at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp — and breakfast too — is served in the main tent.
To start, we had a traditional Moroccan soup, followed by an assortment of salads, chicken tagine and fruits for dessert.
Our request delivered
A highlight of the dinner was when our guide appeared with a bottle of red wine for us.
Though he'd said he would get us some wine, we didn't think he had enough time. Turns out he kept true to his word.
Anything other than water isn’t included in the price, but you can buy (soft drinks) on site.
Live entertainment beneath the stars
Once dinner was finished, we headed outside to indulge in some live Berber entertainment.
Playing a selection of local songs, and using traditional instruments, we clapped, cheered and even danced along to the beats.
The music brought everyone together, crossing cultures and language. It was a special moment, and one I’d happily relive again.
Watching the stars and sunrise
I didn’t get much sleep during our stay at Caravanserai Luxury Desert Camp.
The adrenaline and excitement of the evening, not to mention the other friendly guests we’d met, kept me wide awake.
However, there was another great distraction for my lack of sleep: the mesmerizing and hypnotic desert night sky. My husband and I stayed up late watching an orchestra of stars flicker brightly above us.
From the top of the dune where we sat, we were also lucky enough to catch a few falling stars.
Sunrise in the Sahara Desert in mid-October begins around 6.20am.
Shake off any traces of sleep, dress in whatever is nearest (jacket too) and don’t miss seeing the start of a new day.
It’s moments like this when you see the world at its beautiful best. Calm, peaceful and with the distant murmuring of camels, our desert camping experience was one we'd never forget.

The Caravanserai Luxury desert camp looks so exotic. I would love to stay there for a night or two. A sunset camel ride sounds lovely too. It must have been a very memorable stay.
It's a gorgeous place and truly memorable, we would do it again!
What a great post! And the pictures. I’m ready to sign up for this trip!!!
Wonderful! We loved our time here, and know others will too.
This is so amazing! I love the way you write and I love how detailed this article is. I LOVE sleeping under the stars! I had never heard of that place but it is now officially on my bucket list!! Thank you for such an inspiring post!! 🙂
Thank you Annick, I'm so happy you enjoyed my post. I love sleeping under the stars too, and I would recommend everyone to try it at least once x
This post took me on a nostalgic journey. I have done desert camping in Oman and it was a lovely experience. The whole stretch of sands is an enigma and it is very easy to get lost in deserts. Thus it is very important to stay in groups. The camel rides, the sunset, the Arabic dances and the the thrill of sleeping in the middle of the desert is amazing.
Oh wow, your experience also sounds amazing! You've summed it up perfectly, and it was indeed a great thrill!
Delightful photos - there is something very special about sleeping under the stars on sand dunes.
Your post reminds me of the time I visited Rajasthan's That desert and saw the most beautiful starry sky.
That sounds incredible too! I've yet to travel to India, but this sounds like a must try!
What a lovely experience in a desert glamping, the camel ride isn't as comfortable as the beds though. Dinner with local music what a perfect way to end a day
Oh yes, it was a magical experience, and actually, the camel wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought!
Now this is the type of camping I can get behind! What a dream come true in the middle of the desert- seems like the perfect place to spend time away from the hustle of city life. From the luxurious accommodations to the stunning landscapes, Caravanserai is a true destination in itself. Sign me up!
You won't regret it! It was the highlight of our trip, and I'd love to do it again, but for longer!
What a nice and magical experience indeed. I’d love to go camping in the desert. Your pictures are so beautiful 🙂 the sunset is magical !
Thank you Florence, I really appreciate your feedback, it's very special there 😀
What a beautiful stay midst the dunes! I did glamping in the deserts of Rajasthan and the experience was surreal. Your stay at Merzouga seems to be similar. The pictures are stunning, thank you for giving such a virtual tour of the place.
Aw wow, your glamping experience sounds just as incredible! I've yet to visit India, but have seen so many stunning places in Rajasthan! Maybe one day soon....
My favorite shot is the one with the candle lantern! I had the similar experience in Namibia Sossusvlei, but it was only a one-day trip so I hope I can return there someday! Thank you for sharing! Your pictures make me wanna go to Merzouga right away!
Thanks Ivan! I'd love to visit Namibia one day, it's so beautiful there from the pictures, and remote too. Hope you make it to Merzouga one day!
What a beautiful experience this must've been. Would love to visit someday!
What an amazing experience! I don't think i'd be getting much sleep either, but now I can't wait to follow in your footsteps.
That's great to read! It's an amazing experience and you sleep's underrated anyway!
I had similar camp experience in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. The feeling of staying in a tent, enjoying the sunrise and sunset camel ride and indulging traditional dance and music are the best luxuries one can ask for. I had great time camping in the desert. I would definitely try this in Merzouga again.
That's really great to hear! You won't be disappointed one bit 😀
This is the dream! We loooove the concept of Glamping, more and more remote locations are offering it and it's quite amazing! Sunset camel rides are mandatory! We have fomo so badly right now.
I know exactly what you mean! I'm a complete glamper, and I totally loved the camel ride at sunset, so romantic too if you're in a couple!
Oh wow this Merzouga Desert Camp looks like a dream! A little luxury whilst enjoying such incredible natural beauty? Yes please! Thanks for your thorough review including the note about hairdryers being discouraged even though the tents are powered - answers a lot of my questions!
Aw you're welcome, glad I could help. It's really like a great dream, and an experience I urge everyone to try!
I can imagine, what an amazing feeling you get while camping in desert. As I did it near Abudhabi for first time but it was my memorable one. Your Caravanserai desert camp is looking well maintained with full of luxury. Riding camels across sunset in evenings gives a true feeling of living a life in desert. Watching stars while sleeping underneath the open sky is taking ourselves to childhood lanes.
I couldn't have said it better myself! It was a childhood dream come true and the camel ride at sunset was incredible!
Wow what an experience! I've always wanted to sleep under the stars away from the crowds. The entertainment sounds great too, something to add to the wish list when I visit Morocco!
It's really a must try, even if just once in your life!
I had a similar experience to this in India. Those camel rides are uncomfortable but have to be done! It's good your guide was taking pictures of you on the camel though. I know what you mean about not wanting to go to sleep with all the stars and shooting stars in the sky. I was up all night taking long exposure shots! Caravanserai looks like a reliable company for a Sahara desert experience, which also pay attention to detail.
I bet you came away with some incredible shots of the night sky! My partner tried, but they weren't good enough to post here! And yes, Caravanserai's an excellent company that'll really look after you 🙂
This looks like a magical experience!! I'd love to go glamping or camping too. I love the fact that they offer live entertainment over dinner. Like you said, walking on the dunes can be more challenging than it looks. Cheers!!
It's really magical, and you won't be disappointed visiting!
I've never gone glamping before, but I think the Sahara Desert would be a fantastic destination to do it! Your camp looks so comfortable and spacious. I bet it is an experience you'll cherish in the coming years!
Oh yes! It was very comfortable and the entire experience just the best.
I so want to visit Morocco! This seems like glamping at its best in Sahara. The whole secluded, away from crowd, exploring infinity like a wanderlust caravan dweller and the starlit skies...I can only imagine how amazing this experience would have been.
You have to visit! It's such an vibrant country and yes, this experience was just unbelievable!
This would have been one of the most amazing experiences ever! I agree that it was better to go by camel rather than a vehicle given you are actually in the Sahara and it makes sense to have done this here. As someone who loves camping out and experiencing nature, I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been to enjoy such a glamping experience overnight with the stars above you. Just fantastic!
You would really love this experience, especially as it's so close to nature! I couldn't capture the starry night sky as I didn't have a great camera (!) but the memories will stay with me for a lifetime 😀
This is exactly the type of adventure for me! I would love to try this. (Excellent photography, too!)
Thank you, you must, it's an amazing place.
What a unique experience!I've never seen anything like this before. That sunset is beautiful and the tent looks incredible inside. Seems like an amazing trip!
It's an amazing experience, and one everyone should do at least once!
Glamping or glamours camping has gained quiet the popularity in recent year, I am a budget traveler and not sure if I can afford it, but will def. check out Merzouga on my spring visit to Morocco
Great you must! Yes, this was a luxury experience, but there are many other companies that will be happy to suit your budget.
Such a wonderful experience. This part of Africa is great I must say. Your pictures say it all, the fun you had and why I must also do this in a life time. But it would be so surreal and I might never get to be able to describe how I'd feel if I ever get to do this.
I understand Kathy as I had a hard time putting it into words too! But I really want others to get their chance to spend a night under the stars and experience a great atmosphere!
Wow, this sounds a bit like out of a fairy tale. It must be so amazing to sleep in this desert camp <3 The camel ride sounds so romantic as well. And I would die for a good chicken tagine as well! This sounds like something I'd absolutely love to do 😀
It was super incredible, and I can't recommend it enough!
I am so jealous of this trip! This is the exact kind of trip I'd love to take - I love Morocco, it's such an interesting country! And that sunset camel safari looks amazing - you've taken some really beautiful pictures here Lisa x
Thanks Becca, I really appreciate your comments! Morocco is stunning, and I urge everyone to get out of Marrakech and see what more the country has to offer 🙂
Wow, what an amazing experience! I have slept in the desert before, in India, but it wasn't even close to the luxurious conditions you have experienced. The tents with the proper beds inside look great and I can't believe there is even electricity and showers with hot water! Watching the sunset from on top a dune must be a spectacular sight.
It's a sight I'll forever take with me. Really, no other travel experience has been as special as this.
This actually sounds so amazing! I love your photos, especially the first one. I've wanted to go to Morocco for so long and this is definitely an experience that would be top of my list!
It was amazing, and thank you for the compliments! Photographing this place is so easy as everything's photogenic!
Wow! You had an amazing experience. I didn't know that we could sleep at the dessert. I haven't been to any dessert yet, but would love to go, and yes, staying beneath the stars!
You'll love it, it's one of the best travel memories I've ever had!
What a thrilling experience I have seen this type of adventure on television but I never imagined it would be possible. An incredibly magical experience as you said - I for one would be very happy to actually spend a few weeks camping this way.
It's mind blowing, and I'd love to go again it's that good!
Wow! This sounds awesome! Reminds me of SATC 2! Till then I had never connected desert safari with luxury, but only with ruggedness! I'm sure no words can describe such an experience!!! It looks too awesome!
I remember that scene from the film (though it was so bad!). It was an incredible experience, and I would say yes in a heartbeat!
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be going this far out 🙁 - I think I need longer than a week's holiday, I'm going to have to come back and travel Morocco properly aren't I ? However this does loo fantastic, I'm not sure what tour I'm going to do yet, but when I read through your posts Lisa you make me want to splash the cash a little haha. I'm going to be running through your blog in the next few weeks taking as much info as I can for my week out there 😀
Ah, you must! I have even more articles on Morocco coming, but I understand that your itinerary may not be for so long. However, you must get to a Sahara Desert experience one day, it's mind blowing 😀
We have experienced something similar in Rajasthan India but Africa and the Sahara desert camp is more of a dreamy for Africa is on top of our bucket list. The Caravanserai luxury desert camp sounds like a great choice and a fabulous accommodation with all the comforts.
It's an excellent choice, and one where they really want to give you a memorable experience. I highly recommend!
This looks like a beautiful experience, and very similar to the desert camping experience in Dubai! Looking at your pictures, I can't tell whether its in the UAE or Morocco! I love desert camps, they're so serene, comfortable and amazing. Living here in the UAE, it's something we do once every summer! Not all camps are as luxurious though, I'm sure this would've been one experience to remember!
Ah you're so lucky to be so close to it! I had the best time and would really do it all again! But only in luxury of course! 😛
Wow! This looks like a magical experience. Watching sunset in the desert and sleeping beneath the stars is such a beautiful feeling. The camp looks super luxurious. Love the magnificent views and your pictures truly justifies the beauty of the place. Hope to go for such a trip soon! 🙂
You'll absolutely enjoy it, I guarantee! I can't think of any better experience I've had than this in Morocco 😀
First of all, gorgeous photos! I so would love to visit Merzouga myself! And that luxury camp sounds like the way to do it! (I guess I better start saving! 🙂 ) Last year was my very first trip to Morocco, and I REALLY hope to return to visit more of that beautiful country -- including Merzouga and the Sahara! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Stefanie, that's so kind of you to write! It's a stunning country, and one that I urge everyone to see at least once in their lifetime 🙂
We slept in a luxury tent in the Sahara end of September for our wedding anniversary. Such an amazing experience. It's great to have the added luxury of the bathroom. I loved the camel ride, not as uncomfortable as I thought it would be! It actually rain a little when we were there. The camp looks amazing!
Aw, it's the perfect wedding anniversary gift, really! I agree about the camel ride, I enjoyed every second of it 😀
I have always wanted to spend time in the desert even though I am allergic to heat, but this is truly magnificent and oh-so-luxurious. Love how comfortable the tents are and the ides to be out in the open under the stars and total peace and quiet is pretty tempting. Thanks
You're welcome! Actually, the weather was perfect when I went in October, and not hot at all!
Not going to lie, I probably wouldnt have slept much either. This sounds totally epic (you just made me revert to my 80s childhood slang cause it was so awesome!)
I cant imagine paying extra to ride in a car though an atv across the sand dunes may be cool, but a camel ride through the sahara at sunset...I mean c'mon that is great!
That camp looks amazing, was one night really expensive or is there different levels?
Thanks Eric, and I love the 80s slang! I'll be honest; it's quite expensive, but if you plan to do it just once in your life, you won't be disappointed at all with this place. The sunset camel ride's wonderful, really makes you feel like a kid again!
This sounds so wonderful! I wanted to do this when I was there last winter, but we weren't in the right part of the country. Having an experience like this is on my bucket list, though!
It's an incredible experience, and one I'll remember forever! From the camels to the ambience of the desert, I can't recommend this luxury camp enough.
Morocco is high on my wish list. I have never camped in a desert. Judging by the pictures I am sure you had a memorable experience. I can relate to the reasons you stated for not being able to sleep. Travel to amazing places like this does it to me also.
It's one of the best experiences I've ever had, and really recommend everyone to try it once! Sleep is underrated sometimes anyway!
Wow! This luxury desert camp in Morocco sounds absolutely amazing! I have only camped in two deserts: Thar Desert (India) and Wadi Rum (Jordan) but they've been basic affairs with no running water and blankets. This looks absolutely inviting and comfortable, to say the least.
You're a better person than me Suzanne! I've tried the basic way, and it's definitely not for me! The desert camp was really the highlight of my Morocco experience!
