4 best day trips from Tallinn

As much as I enjoy exploring a new city, I also love getting outside them.
And, Tallinn is one of those destinations where you get the best of both worlds.
The city has plenty of things to do and see, alongside places just outside that make ideal day trips.
Day trips from Tallinn
It might come as a surprise to read that there are many beaches in and around Tallinn.
From Pirita in the north, to the beaches along the coast in Pärnu, natural beauty here extends beyond the forests.
Beaches to visit in Estonia
Mändjala beach on Saaremaa island
This beach, located on the Gulf of Riga, is the southernmost beach in Estonia.
A bit of a drive from the mainland, it'd be wise to spend a night or two. Check into a hotel, a quaint guest cottage or camp out beneath the stars.
Pärnu Rand
This is a popular sandy beach to the west of Estonia. Come summer, it’s not surprising to see locals from Pärnu, and other parts of the country, enjoying the beach.
Pärnu Rand is also ideal for families with young children, as there are shallow warm waters near the bay. The promenade is also ideal for vacationing couples. Picture long beach walks and watching dreamy sunsets.
Easy day trips from Tallinn
We came across the following beaches from a mixture of two sources: internet sources and speaking with locals. Needless to say, you’ll need to hire a car to do these day trips from Tallinn.
There are other options available like Uber as well as some public transport. However, having your own car lets you choose how long, or how short, you want to stay in one place.
Pirita beach
Pirita beach is one of the easiest day trips from Tallinn given its proximity to the city center. By car, it takes about 15 minutes.
This means you don’t need to hire a car, but can instead take a bus or taxi service like Uber. The beach is located in the suburb of Pirita. It’s a quiet area that gives you a first glimpse into the natural beauty of the country.

Good reasons to visit Pirita beach
It’s local
Pirita beach is where the locals go. And there’s no better way to discover authentic areas away from the crowds than by following their lead.
The biggest beach in Tallinn is popular with every kind of visitor. From families to friends, or even nature lovers, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.
A small pine forest provides a backdrop to the beach. It's ideal for grabbing a little shade from when the sun's beating down.
During summer is when Pirita beach really comes to life. As well as a beach bar, there’s also a bowling club, bars and kiosks. There are playgrounds for children as well as an area for ball games.
Lifeguards are also on duty at Pirita beach, but typically only throughout the peak season.
Its location
Pirita beach faces onto the Gulf of Finland, with the port of Helsinki just a few hours away. In fact, taking the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki is a popular day trip in itself. If you plan on doing this, be sure to book your ferry tickets in advance.
Prices can skyrocket at the last minute as we found out.
Also, unless you’re planning to spend the night in Helsinki, try to take the earliest morning ferry. This way, you’ll have enough time to explore and be back in Tallinn by the evening.
Pirita has plenty to see and do, which makes it one of my favorite day trips from Tallinn.
What to see in Pirita
As well as the fantastic beach, Pirita is home to another visitor attraction. Across the road from the beach is the Memorial to the Victims of Communism (Maarjamäe in Estonian).
The memorial pays tribute to the people that died during the Soviet regime. It’s a stark and poignant reminder of the country’s Soviet past, and absolutely worth visiting while in Pirita.
There are two parts to the memorial: plaques listing names of the victims and the garden. Take note of the informative texts and stone tablets as you walk around the garden.
It’s a fitting tribute to the people that died and a serene place of remembrance.
Tallinn TV Tower
While in Pirita, you may consider visiting the Tallinn TV Tower. Standing at 314m, the tower’s the tallest, not just in Tallinn, but in Estonia too.
At the top of the tower is an observation deck, with panoramic views of the city. Try and visit on a clear day if possible; there’s nothing more disappointing than arriving at a cloudy vista.
Satisfy your inner thrill-seeker by trying Walk on the edge. As the name suggests, you’ll be walking on the edge at a height of 175m on the 22nd floor.
Just for adventurers
You’ll be attached to the ledge with a safety harness, and the walk can last up to 30 minutes. Check the website for further details on price information, as well as safety requirements.
There’s an entrance fee to the tower, with different ticket options available, such as family or group tickets. Beat the crowds by getting a fast-lane ticket in advance. Lines build up quickly, and booking ahead saves time and money too.
At the top of the tower is a cafe and restaurant. Along with the a la carte menu, there's also a kids menu too.

Pirita Convent Ruins
If you’ve enough time in your schedule, swing by ruins of Pirita Convent.
During its time (1417 to 1575), it was one of the largest convents in northern Europe. The convent was a place for both nuns and monks.

Watch the sunset in Pirita
There’s nothing I love more than watching a dreamy sunset. And from Pirita — depending on the time of year you visit — it’s spectacular. We visited in early May where the sun set around 8.30pm.
This gave us plenty of time to enjoy dinner beforehand in Tuljak. Almost every local we spoke to recommended this fine dining Estonian establishment and we completely understand why.
Not only is the food top quality, but so is the service too. The icing on the cake was getting a window table so we could watch the sun set while enjoying dinner.
It’s a restaurant that lives up to its reputation, and it also makes a perfect spot for a romantic dinner.

Where to stay in Pirita
Given its close proximity to Tallinn city center, it’s not necessary to stay overnight in Pirita. However, if you do fancy staying a bit longer in the area, there are two nearby options.
Pirita Marina Hotel & SPA is within walking distance of the beach. This comfortable hotel has a wellness center, mini golf course, and some rooms with sea views.
Pirita Beach Apartments & Spa is situated right on the beach. Accommodation is basic, yet clean, and with amenities that include a spa, sauna, outdoor pool and hot tub.
Vääna-Jõesuu
It’s fair to say that you probably won’t find this beach in many travel books or guides.
We came by the village, and beach, of Vääna-Jõesuu by sheer coincidence. As you follow the road out of Tallinn to the west, you’ll eventually meet the coastal road.
A sandy surprise
While on our way to Laulasmaa Rand (rand means beach), we decided to stop at a local cafe for coffee. It was here that we happened to check the map and found that another beach was also nearby.
Vääna-Jõesuu is located in Harju County, which is about 20 minutes’ drive from Tallinn.
We didn’t find much here aside from some wonderful Scandinavian style wooden houses and of course the beach.
Vääna-Jõesuu beach
Given the way we discovered Vääna-Jõesuu beach, we followed our own directions according to the GPS. We didn’t see any obvious signposting to the beach or towards a parking area either. Maybe this will change by the time you visit.
Vääna-Jõesuu isn’t the easiest of beaches to reach. We had to first drive down a residential road and then also pass through an open space of forest. Finally, we caught a glimpse of the sea between the gap of two houses.
An entire beach to yourself
The perfume of sea air hits you the second you step out from the car.
It was a perfectly sunny day with clear blue skies when we visited Vääna-Jõesuu. However, being early May there was still a chill in the air and some light winds. Because of this, don't forget to bring a thick jacket or coat should you also choose to visit during this period.
Traveling during the off-peak season also meant that there was nobody around.
It was an exhilarating feeling having an entire beach to ourselves. Sure, it was far too cold to swim or bathe, but it didn’t matter. Standing there with nature at its raw and remote finest is a memory I’ll always treasure.
A hidden gem of a beach, Vääna-Jõesuu makes one of the most unique day trips from Tallinn.
Kloogaranna Rand
Unlike Vääna-Jõesuu, Kloogaranna Rand was one of the beaches we’d intended to visit.
The beach is close to the village of Kloogaranna, which also sits in Harju County. It’s much smaller in size, and population too (121 according to a popular internet site).
From Vääna-Jõesuu, it’s a short and easy drive to reach Kloogaranna Rand. Unlike the first one, there are signs leading to the beach as well as a good-size parking area.
A beach for two
Getting from the parking area to the beach is a very short 2-minute walk. A long sandy stretch greets you as you make your first step from concrete to sand.
Once again, we arrived to find no one there, aside from a group of swans enjoying the sea water. If you happen to visit on a less windy day, take a picnic and enjoy the views at Kloogaranna.
Klooga Memorial
On our way to our second beach of the day, we came across a road sign leading to Klooga Memorial. Without realizing what it was, we soon discovered it was a former concentration camp used during the holocaust.
In truth, I initially didn’t want to see more because I find the subject too horrific. But, seeing as we'd never heard of, or planned to, visit the memorial, I wanted to know more.
We continued driving down a long, narrow road with tall, looming trees on either side.
The surroundings are so remote, serene and picturesque, it was cruel to imagine the immense suffering that took place.
Reaching the memorial
Eventually, we reached two triangular walls. There was a sign leading to the memorial, plus descriptive text in Estonian and in English.
We continued driving down the narrow path until we eventually arrived at the outdoor exhibition. It consisted of large concrete blocks with text inscribed describing the horror of what took place at Klooga in September 1944.
Open all year round the exhibition is free to enter.
Laulasmaa
The phrase ‘saving the best till last’ springs to mind when I think of Laulasmaa. This was the final destination on our beach day trips from Tallinn, and what a place it was.
Laulasmaa is also located in Harju County like the other beaches. Where it differs is that it has a wide-open bay, making it ideal for beach and nature seekers.
Where to stay in Laulasmaa
A great place to stay, spa and eat in Laulasmaa is at LaSpa.
You’ll see signs turning off the main road from Kloogaranna Tee. Lush, green forest surrounds the hotel and spa, and you also get your first glance of the sea upon entering.
Accommodation and more
There are 147 rooms in total, ranging from superior rooms to suites with your own sauna. LaSpa is also family friendly, with family rooms available and plenty of children’s facilities too.
Sadly, we didn’t get to spend any time in the spa. Naudi LaSpa has a wide range of treatments to choose from, including facials, massages, and even a children’s spa.
We did, however, manage to have lunch at the hotel restaurant, Restaurant Wicca. The menu comprises of Estonian dishes made using local produce.
Our dishes were full of flavor, color and incredibly healthy. We left feeling satisfied and ready to finally see the beach.
Laulasmaa Rand
The walk from the hotel’s main doors to the beachfront is a short one. You pass a life-size chess board, which surely is popular among kids during summer.
However, spring is a quieter affair. It’s just you and the elements — a feeling that intensifies once you arrive at the beach.
My favorite beach
Laulasmaa Rand is sandier and less rocky than the previous beaches. Again, there was no-one there but us, but it’s easy to picture it full of people come summertime.
There’s not more to add about Laulasmaa Rand other than this: enjoy every second you spend here.
Extra tip: Stop by a local Estonian cafe before you turn into the road leading to LaSpa. It's called Cafe Ott and Matilda and is situated on Kloogaranna tee.

I want to go on a trip to Estonia in a camper van, so I would like to follow your tips on what places to see around Tallinn. I did not think the beaches are so beautiful and sandy. I would like to relax on the beach in Pirita and visit other attractions, such as the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. I want to go to the top of Tallinn TV Tower to the observation desk. The view must be outstanding!

We visited Tallin only for one day on a cruise. But loved the city. So great to know about day trips if we used Tallin as a base. I normally would not think o beaches for a city so north. And was amazed at how nice some of the beaches looked. The ones in Vaana-Joesuu and Laulasmaa looked particularly inviting! Especially if I got them all to myself.
It's not normal for outsiders to visit these places, but the beaches outside Tallinn are so beautiful. If we had visited in summer, I'm sure it would have been packed 😀
When it comes to beaches, I would have never thought of Estonia! I'm glad you've educated me and shown me the error of my ways, ha! I would be most excited to go to Pirita beach since that's where the locals congregate. I think it's important to visit a destination and experience it like a local. I would also want to explore the ruins of Pirita Convent because I'm a history junkie!

I’ve never heard of this beautiful city. All these beaches look so quiet, pleasant and dipped in pristine natural beauty. I would so love to visit Pirita beach for its scenic views and to witness that mesmerizing sunset. Also, not to miss the ruins of Pirita Convent as well as the panoramic views from the observation deck of Tallinn TV Tower.
Tallinn, and its beaches, are really a must see here. I hope you visit yourself one day 🙂
Oh yes, this is my kind of post I like - prefer to go out of the city and discover beaches when possible! Too bad about the concentration camp an memorial but a reminder of absurd part of our human history.

Frankly, I never imagined Tallinn to be so close to so many beaches. I’ve always thought of it as a city break destination. I can now plan a well-rounded trip of city and outdoors. Estonia is really high on my travel list.

I have not ventured out to this part of Europe and must admit reading some of your posts about Estonia Tallinn has made me think real hard and to plan and visit it soon. I was not aware that there were such beautiful beaches a short journey from Tallinn. My favourite will without a doubt be Pärnu Rand due to it being a popular sandy beach. Apart from visiting these beaches Tallinn itself has so much to offer it seems and you can easily spend a few days here. Looks like the perfect destination for the summer holidays thanks for sharing

What perfect timing to come across this post, I’m going to Tallin later this summer. That’s a good tip about having to hire a car to make the most of the beaches and points of interest. I didn’t even consider hopping over to Helsinki for a day trip, I love that suggestion. Being a bit of a ruin-junkie myself, I’m particularly interested in the Convent Ruins in Pirita. It sounds like there is so much to do around Tallin.

I always enjoy reading posts about day trips, since we usually seek them out when we travel to large cities. These four beaches all look incredible, and I love that they are all under 1 hour away. I would like to visit Klooga. I can imagine show devastating it would be, and it would be wonderful to visit the memorial to pay our respects.
It was a surprising find, and a humbling experience, even just making it to the entrance sign. Kloogaranna is an amazing beach and huge too!
I haven’t been in Tallinn, Estonia and I have always wanted to visit it since it’s one of my favorite Baltic countries. I am eager to try Pirita beach because I have heard so much about it. I know that I’ll be back in Europe next year so I might swing by Estonia. They say Tallinn is the center for Europe’s culture so it’s really interesting to visit it in the future. Ah, I never associated beaches with Tallinn! Most of the posts I have read and pictures that I've seen of the city are around the gorgeous old architecture and the cobbled stone streets but not of the beaches so it's a pleasant surprise to read that there are quite a few and easily reachable from the city centre! Pirita sounds perfect because it's also popular with the locals. Visiting the memorial, the convent ruins and edge walking on the TV Tower would complete the day. What a great mix of history, adventure and beautiful waters.

Tallin is on our list of places to visit for my blog wifey and myself and I am absolutely astounded to see there are so many things to do in 24 hours, especially all of those beaches. They look so stunning and I genuinely didn't realise that there were so many.

I love being able to take these short day trips from the city. I'd probably take your suggestion and hire a car instead of a cab or uber. My first pick would be to visit Pirita Beach. I love taking photos and the small pine forest would indeed make for a great backdrop 🙂
