How to get from Venice to Burano

Burano is a must-visit for anyone planning on seeing Venice.
Characterized by candy-colored houses and tranquil canals, Burano feels like stepping into a fantastical dream.
While nothing, and nowhere, is like Venice, Burano offers a unique take. It’s more relaxed, calmer and an island made for its residents.
In this Italy travel guide I’ll be outlining the direct ways on how to get from Venice to Burano.
I’ll walk you through the different ways to get to Burano from Venice so you can experience a smooth journey.
Why skip Venice?
This Venice travel guide isn’t trying to discourage you from seeing Venice.
It’s intended for anyone who’s already seen Venice two or three times and wants to explore other islands.

The vaporetto in Venice
The number one way to travel directly from Venice to Burano is by vaporetto (water bus).
It's the most affordable way to travel around Venice and is easy to use. Like the metro in NYC or the tube in London, the vaporetto is one of Venice’s transport modes.
A single ticket costs €9.50 ($10/£8) per adult*. While it isn’t the cheapest price tickets last for 75 minutes. This means that you could squeeze in two vaporetto rides if planned correctly.
In my experience, vaporetto tickets have cost much less when I've booked them in advance.
During one Venice visit I overheard the lady in the ticket office giving visitors a higher price for tickets from Venice to Burano. She told them that it cost €25 ($26/£21) per person while we’d only paid €9.50 online. We used the vaporetto as normal, validated our tickets and encountered no issues.
Though the vaporetto isn’t free for adults it is for kids up to the age of 6. One of the best free things to do in Italy with kids, it costs nothing to ride.
How to get from Venice to Burano from Venezia Santa Lucia train station
For many visitors looking for how to get from Venice to Burano, their journey typically begins at Venice’s train station.
What many visitors don’t know is that there’s no direct vaporetto from Venice train station to Burano.
Instead, there are several choices, all of which include a bit of walking.
First choice
The first choice is probably the simplest.
Exit Santa Lucia train station and descend the large staircase that leads to the Grand Canal (Venice’s most famous canal).
From here, it’s around a 33-minute walk to reach the vaporetto stop called FONDAMENTE NOVE. It’s a walk that will take you through the Cannaregio neighborhood of Venice.
Fondamente Nove is the pinnacle stop when planning how to get from Venice to Burano. Get used to seeing it because it’s a name that will be mentioned a lot throughout this guide.
I highly recommend typing 'Fondamente Nove’ into your mobile’s GPS (or an app like Google Maps). It will save so much time if trying to travel directly from Venice to Burano. Needless to say, it’s essential you have mobile data access when visiting Venice and Italy in general.

Fondamente Nove
You’ll see 4 vaporetto stops once arriving at Fondamente Nove. They are:
- Fondamente Nove A
- Fondamente Nove B
- Fondamente Nove C
- Fondamente Nove D
Look for the no. 12 vaporetto sign heading in the direction of ‘Treporti’.
The no.12 vaporetto from Fondamente Nove D will take you directly from Venice to Burano. It includes two stops beforehand, Murano and Mazzorbo.
From time to time the no.12 vaporetto may depart from another of the ‘Fondamente Nove’ stops. Be mindful of this on the day of your trip.
The average total journey time of the first choice is about 1hr 20mins.

Second choice
Another option — from the train station — is to take vaporetto no.1 (direction ‘Lido’) from the stop called
‘Ferrovia E’. Descend the large staircase, turn right and keep walking until you reach the very first vaporetto stop.
Take the vaporetto (heading in the direction of Lido) and get off at the ‘Ca d’Oro’ vaporetto stop. From here, it’s around a 10-minute walk to reach Fondamente Nove.
Again, type Fondamente Nove into your phone’s GPS to avoid getting lost.
The average total journey time of the second choice is about 1hr 20mins.
How to get from Venice to Burano (via Murano)
Another option to travel directly from Venice to Burano consists of taking a vaporetto from Murano.
Starting again from Venezia Santa Lucia station, walk (approximately 11 minutes) to the S. Giobbe vaporetto stop.
Take the vaporetto no.4.2 in the direction of Murano Faro (note: this will take you to the ‘Murano Faro B’ stop).
From here, walk to the ‘Murano Faro A’ vaporetto stop and take the no.12 vaporetto heading towards Treporti.
The total journey time of this option is approximately 1 hour.
How to get from Venice to Burano from Piazzale Roma
Piazzale Roma is another major hub from which visitors traveling to Venice arrive and depart from. It's where airport shuttle buses, along with regular buses, travel to and from Venezia San Marco Polo.
Piazzale Roma also has parking areas for visitors arriving to Venice by car.
There are several options on getting from Piazzale Roma to Burano. Like from Venice train station there are no direct routes.
Option 1
Walk about 4 minutes in the direction of the Grand Canal and go to the vaporetto stop ‘Piazzale Roma D’. Take the vaporetto no.5.2 (for around 32 mins) to Fondamente Nove. From here take the no.12 vaporetto as detailed above.
The total journey time is approximately 1hr 30mins.
Option 2
Like above, walk in the direction of the Grand Canal and go to the vaporetto stop ‘Piazzale Roma C’.
Take vaporetto no.1 (direction ‘Lido’) to ‘Ca d’Oro’ and walk to Fondamente Nove.
The average total journey time is 1hr 20mins.
How to get from Venice to Burano by tour
Should you prefer a fuss-free, everything organized, way to get from Venice to Burano I’d recommend joining a tour.
There's no need to think about using your phone’s GPS or getting vaporetto tickets in advance. The beauty of booking a tour is that everything is done for you. Some tours that might be worth a closer look include:
