1. Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Slip on your flip flops and prepare for a sizzling winter beach vacation to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Overall, Hawaii is the warmest US state to visit in January. However, the month’s also the ‘coldest’ time of the year to visit the coastal town on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Average low temperatures range from a pleasant 69°F (20.5°C) to a very nice 81°F (27°C). On the other end of the spectrum, average high temperatures in January range from 81°F (27°C) to 83°F (28.3°C).

Best things to do in Kailua-Kona — which places are hot in January?
Kailua-Kona is blessed with white sandy beaches and warm waters. Because of this, swimming, snorkeling and sailing are some of the top outdoor activities along with hiking.
Many of Kailau-Kona’s beaches take a bit of work to reach but they’re worth the effort.
Makalawena Beach is a secluded beach cove blessed with plenty of fine white sand, lava rocks and 2 lava pools. It’s located to the north of Kailua-Kona and is a good choice for beach lovers.
To the south of Makalawena Beach is Mahai’ula Beach. A little wilder than the former beach, you’ll likely meet some turtles and even goats among its sandy shores.
A taste of Kona
Kailua-Kona’s most famous export is its Kona coffee. Like French Champagne and Italian Parmigiano-Reggiano, Kona coffee can only be called this if it was grown in Kona.
If you love coffee, don’t hesitate to book a Kona coffee tasting. Kona coffee is grown in the town of Holualoa and it’s here where you can try a cup (or two).

Once you’ve had your coffee fill, head north of Kailua-Kona to the Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park. Within the 1160-acre park, you’ll discover temples, fishponds and ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings).

The islands are located in the western Pacific Ocean. To add some context to its location, the flight time takes around 14hrs and 20 minutes from Los Angeles.

But, there’s a price, and a high one at that, to pay for Disneyland®. Luckily, Anaheim has more than one option when it comes to theme parks.
Adventure City is a cheaper, though smaller, alternative, while Knott’s Berry Farm® will easily take up an entire day’s itinerary.
Ditch Disney
Once you’ve gotten your fill from the theme parks, explore another side of Anaheim. Hike or walk one of the city’s trails to enjoy the nature enveloped within Orange County.

Where to stay in Anaheim

The sunshine state of the US holds its moniker for good reason and is one of the warmest places in the US in January.
Florida is a classic winter destination, with its high temperatures attracting masses of sun-seekers each year.
While Miami is the warmest place in Florida in January, the southernmost city of Key West offers a sunnier alternative.
Located in the Straits of Florida, Key West combines urban living with a tropical twist. Not surprising when you discover that Cuba is about 90mi (145km) from Key West.
Key West weather in January
January’s a good time to visit the island city if you like your weather warm, but not scorching. Average high temperatures in January hover around 72.7°F (22.6°C) with average low temperatures around 68.5°F (20.3°C).
While January is the 'coldest' month, humidity still sits at 76%. Bad news for anyone with long hair but good news for warm weather seekers.
Things to do in winter in Key West — what is the warmest state to visit in January?
Because of its location and climate, the main reason people come to Key West is for its water activities.
Diving and snorkeling typically top the list given the spectacular underwater scenery and world-class wreck diving.
Seven miles off the coast of Key West is the Vandenburg ship. Intentionally sunk in 2009 to create an artificial reef, the site’s part of the Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail.
If you prefer your water activities from a far, and dry, distance, a dolphin watching eco-tour may be better suited. But, if all you want to do is relax and catch some sun, Key West’s beaches have you covered.
Higg’s Beach and Smather’s Beach both have plenty of white sand, bathrooms and picnic tables.

Other notable things to do in Key West
Away from the water, Key West has other attractions to entice you to visit. Visit one of Florida's best lighthouses to admire the sea views. In January, the Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival takes place drawing in hungry crowds.
Local fishermen clean, prepare and serve freshly caught seafood. Tickets cost $10 (€8.74/£7.46) (for 2 days) and the money goes to support sustainable fishing programs and marine restoration projects.

The Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival usually takes place at Truman Waterfront Park but check the venue before visiting.
Watch live street performances, browse some art, grab a bite and catch some incredible sunsets at Sunset Celebration.
The arts festival takes place at Mallory Square Dock each night. It’s a great spot to check out the festivities and to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.

The second entry from Florida on the list is Fort Lauderdale. We’d a stopover in the city on our way to the Bahamas and it wasn’t nearly long enough.
Situated on the southeastern coast, Fort Lauderdale is best known for its beaches and canals. Because of this, the city has been called the ‘Venice of America’. Over 40,000 resident boats line the 300+ miles of inland waterways.
A city that emulates the original Venice in Italy, you can also find tours booking gondola rides on the canals.

Start your Fort Lauderdale beach exploration at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach. A family-friendly seaside town, you’ll enjoy the relaxed vibe, plenty of restaurants and its clean sandy beach.

For a beach that’s a little away from the mainstream, Hillsboro Beach offers a quiet escape. While here, take a trip to the Hillsboro lighthouse where you’ll also find the Barefoot Mailman statue. The statue’s a tribute to the mail carriers from the 1800s that would travel barefoot across the sandy beaches.
A pristine beach with plenty of space for visitors to sunbathe, Pompano Beach is another prime spot in Fort Lauderdale. Along with the typical beach activities, Pompano Beach is also popular for fishing for saltwater fish.

Pass your winter vacation in a Texan city that has a rich colonial heritage.
San Antonio, Texas may not be the first choice that comes to mind. But, the city’s temperatures are relatively mild come January making it a viable option.
Average minimum temperatures in San Antonio in January range from 44.2°F (6.8°C) at night to 61.7°F (16.5°C) during the day. So, while you’ll still need to wear a thick jacket, winters here are far more bearable.
January in San Antonio is also the driest month of the year, with rainfall ranging from 1.14in (29mm) to 1.8in (45mm).
Things to do in San Antonio in winter
Given the mild winter weather and unlikely chance of rain, January’s a good time to explore San Antonio’s historical sites.
Like most first-time visitors to the city, the Alamo is usually the first stop.
Visit the Alamo
Not only a landmark of historical importance, the Alamo is one of the best things to do in San Antonio. The building was a former Spanish mission built in 1718, whose aim was to convert native American Indians to Christianity.

However, the building’s most renowned for the Battle of the Alamo that took place in 1836. It was the scene of the bloody fight for independence from Mexico. While the Texans’ first attempt was unsuccessful, they defeated the Mexicans the second time around, securing their long-desired independence.
Today, the former mission is open to the public and it’s free to enter. Reservations are required in order to reduce the number of crowds and to also preserve the historic building.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Another notable historic site worth visiting in San Antonio is the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Together with the Alamo, they’re Texas’ first UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The park consists of 4 Spanish colonial missions that date to the 18th century. Within each of the walled compounds are a church and housing where the priests and Native Americans once lived.

San Antonio is within close reach of the picturesque rural region, and its European-influenced towns are a delight to visit.

Boerne and Fredericksburg are 2 such examples, with the former being named after German author Ludwig Börne. Listen out for residents speaking German, and stop by for some traditional food in town.

10. New Orleans, Louisiana
There are plenty of good reasons to visit New Orleans in January, the first one being the weather.
Daytime average temperatures in the Big Easy in January can reach up to 64°F (18°C). At night, this number dips to a cool 45°F (7°C) (average low temperature).
Despite these numbers, January is still a good time to visit New Orleans. The city’s blessed with an average of 5 hours of sunshine and very few rainy days making it one of the warmest places in the US in January.
The period before Mardi Gras
Come February, New Orleans is inundated with visitors in town attending Mardi Gras. The carnival draws in visitors from the US and across the world for its colorful and lively parades.
And, unless your sole purpose for visiting New Orleans is for Mardi Gras, February is best avoided. Instead, the previous month is quieter, not to mention, many of the hotels have lower rates.

Best activities in New Orleans in January
You may not be in town for Mardi Gras, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn more about it. The Mardi Gras Museum takes you through the history, plus you also get the chance to try on some costumes.

While here, grab a freshly baked beignet at Cafe du Monde and a New Orleans classic, a café au lait. A coffee served with chicory and half hot milk, this café au lait is unlike any you’ve ever tried.

This is a great list of the warmest places in the US in January Lisa. I enjoyed Fort Lauderdale and Florida Keys but would love to visit New Orleans. While there a trip on an authentic paddlewheeler, cruising down the Mississippi River would be a must-do.
I completely agree with you Wendy. I think the paddlewheeler would make it more authentic!

You're welcome Laura, happy to provide some warm inspiration 🙂
I love the sound of Yuma in this entire list. For one, I did not know about it and the other, I like the little history behind it. Hawai and Palm springs have always been on my list. And if it is a beach that I need to choose other than Hawaii, am quite kicked about Northern Mariana islands. Lovely list here.
Thank you Ami! You're right about Yuma, it's not well known but I think it has such great potential as a winter US getaway.
You should definitely visit Yuma! The authentic Mexican food, the history, and sun!
Well said Lyndsay!
I love USA as it is a huge country with different landscapes, climates and this list is so useful to explore places with such a handy guide. I’m particularly interested in the Arizona, Hawaii, and Yuma area because of the amazing vibes they provide.
I completely agree with you 🙂 The USA has some incredible places to visit and some underrated too.
With the US being a large country with many different climates, this list is useful. I'm particularly interested in the Yuma area because of the outdoor adventure that the location offers. The Palm Springs also looks inviting!
Yuma should get more attention than it currently does! And Palm Springs almost looks like an oasis in the middle of the desert 😀
Hawaii and Arizona are the states I would like to explore in the USA. YUMA in Arizona really intrigues me. These places look so distant as compared to NYC which I visited during the cold month of January.
They're definitely great options if you want some warm weather in January in the US, Yuma is a really unique one too 🙂
With the snow and frigid temperatures starting here in New York, this is a much welcomed list! Many of these places, like Hawaii and New Orleans are on my bucket list, so maybe this is the year to visit!
I'm happy to read that Melissa!
Originally from Florida so I definitely appreciate the warmer weather here in January. I have never been a big fan of the cold so I try to avoid it as much as I can. Hawaii in the winter sure does sound nice 🙂 !
You are very lucky Sophie, Florida is always sunny!
I love warm and dry places as I dislike cold. So will definitely make a note of these places if I am in US during January. Other than Hawaii, I have not seen any of these other places even though they have always been on my list. A warm weather with such amazing landscapes are surely my thing.
It's mine too!
What a wonderful list on warmest places to visit in January. I would love to see most of them. The Mardi gras pics and the architecture pics are amazing.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Great tips on where to spend a vacation in January to stay warm. I would choose Hawaii or California from that list. I was in Florida on Key West in January, and I can confirm that it is worth it, and it's great.
Thank you Agnes, it's good to get a local's perspective!
This is a nice article. Love that you shared states in the US, other than the Caribbean, where readers can take in some warmth during the cold winter months.
Thank you Kevin, glad you enjoyed it.
Such a great list! As a Canadian that loves to escape in winter sometimes quick trip to US is a good idea. Hawaii and Arizona would be my pick for sure.
Thank you! Hawaii is always a good idea
Warm weather places are my favorite. I am lucky to live in south Florida, so I get to be here all year!
You are very lucky indeed!
Sitting in cold and rainy Berlin in Germany I could really do with some sun and warm weather. Great list of summer places in winter! Some of them, as Hawai and New Orleans, are on my bucket list anyway.
It's beginning to look gloomy too here in northern Italy too! Sunshine and warmth is always welcome 🙂
I’m from Texas, a few hours away from San Antonio.. It’s funny how people want to visit San Antonio for sun or at least a mild winter, while we want to see snow in our cities in the wintertime.
I think it's always the way! We want what we don't have 🙂
Oh wow, they all look amazing. I'm from the UK & would never really have thought to visit the US for some winter sun
I hope I've given you some winter wanderlust inspiration!
Oh yes, the US has it good - enjoying summertime even at Christmas. We've been to a couple of these places escaping European winter and had a great time. However, this winter - obviously, due to the pandemic - we are opting for Spain. At least a little sunshine 😉
Spain is always a good idea! I may join you 😀
As Canadians we are always looking for warm places to escape in January. So it was great to look at this list for some new suggestions as we think about planning another escape. We have never visited Hawaii so maybe that needs to move higher on the list. And the Northern Mariana Islands look like a great escape. We certainly could handle a Polynesian twist!
And the Marianas are so interesting and full of history, if mainly tragic. Hawaii in the winter is always a good idea 😀
It is always cold and wet here in the UK so heading somewhere warm and nice in January sounds like such an amazing idea! I would visit any of these places gladly
January for most of us isn't great, glad to provide some sunny inspiration!
Oh wow, so many great places to stay and reasons to visit each place. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome!
Yes, I needed this! It's already so cold where I am right now!
Glad to be of some assistance!
I remember visiting Arizona and Disneyland California over Christmas, and while it wasn't bitterly cold, it was still pretty chilly for me (coming from a tropical place) :).
I think USA in spring/summer is only possible for me.
I understand, I think for those of us used to cold weather, Arizona and Anaheim aren't bad options for January 🙂
Just amazing!!! Take me to Hawaii please! I would love to spend a few months there, that would be amazing...
Yes! Hawaii is such a dream 😀
I would really love to visit Hawaii one day. The beaches, the food, (the coffee); it's just a stunning place to escape to!
Doesn't it look perfect? And the warmest escape from the cold winter weather
I always assumed everywhere in the US got snow for Christmas! But Haiwaii looks like the perfect spot for a warmer Christmas.
For me too, it's a beautiful island!
I've been to San Antonio, TX and Anaheim, CA. And yes, it's warm in those places, especially the former.
So a perfect winter escape in the US 🙂
what a bucket list places..But I love to to Hawaii love beaches so much..Thanks for sharing
Hawaii is always a great choice!
What a fabulous list. Thanks so much for sharing. Now just to decide where to go.
Yes! That's the hardest part isn't it?!
This is a great post. I'd love to escape the cold in the winter! I would love to go to Hawaii, but I'll settle for Arizona or Key west, I have family near there.
Thank you Michelle, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Both are great options and you get to see your family too 😀
It's always nice to know where you can go that's warm. I hate the colder weather so this is perfect for me. I really want to visit New Orleans.
You and me both! New Orleans is a great choice and so much fun too 😀
I love Key West and San Antonio! Perfect warm-weather spots for ditching the winter blues!
Thank you Paige, both are great winter sun destinations 😀
I have been to many of these. Being from Northern Canada it is nice to escape the cold to somewhere warm. Great list.
Thank you Patricia! I'm sure you're ready for some warm weather coming from northern Canada!
So many great warm places to visit!
There are 🙂
