1000+ mega USA bucket list by state

Last updated on February 10th, 2026.

Where do I begin when talking about planning a trip to the US.

A country that encompasses every climate, terrain and ecosystem, it’s no easy feat deciding where to go.

From towering skyscrapers to sprawling deserts, sunny beaches to snow-capped mountains, the USA has attractions to suit everyone.

This travel guide details a mega USA bucket list by state. Each section has around 25 places to visit in each state, including unique places in the US and fun experiences.

If you’re ready, grab a big drink and a notepad, because you’re going to need it.

What is the number one vacation spot in the US?

There's no straightforward answer to ‘what is the number one vacation spot in the US?’ It's akin to asking someone what their favorite song is. Everyone’s answer will be subjective and depend on their personal likes and interests.

Where should I go for the first time in the US?

Where you should go for the first time in the US depends on what you most want to see.

If it’s skyscrapers and big city lights that attract you, consider visiting New York City or Chicago. If you prefer to spend time seeing the natural beauty of the country, underline some of the US' national parks. A state like Utah or Wyoming has a few within its borders.

What is special in America?

What makes America special as a travel destination is a whole range of factors. This includes not just its landmarks and landscapes, but also the diverse population that brings something unique to each state.

What is the number one vacation spot in the US?

There isn't one 'number one vacation spot in the US.' Everyone's answer will be subjective and depend on their likes and interests.

Where should I go for the first time in the US?

It depends on what you most want to see. If it's skyscrapers and big city lights that attract you, visit the big cities. If you want to enjoy the outdoors and nature choose a state like Utah or Wyoming.

What is special in America?

America has beautiful landmarks and landscapes but also a diverse population that brings something unique to each state.

  1. This list is fantastic! I love that you’ve included links to buy tickets to some of the sites. But you’ve listed the Gateway Arch in Des Moines, Iowa when it is located in St. Louis, Missouri.

    1. Thank you so much Valerie! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful! I will correct the mistake 🙂

  2. Oooh. This is one awesome list. Going to Santa's workshop in Alaska would be awesome. I wouldn't miss the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The history buff in me wouldn't want to miss Montezuma Castle National Monument in Arizona. Antelope canyon has been in my wishlist since a very long time ago. California is one of my fav places - Alcatraz island prison, napa valley wine tasting, everything is awesome. It's awesome how all the National parks around the country have been brought together under the same pass.

  3. Wow what an informative post. I am planning a trip to US in October this year and I have asking my friends based all around for tips to planning my one month holiday, including a road trip that we friends are planning to Alaska. Bu after reading this post I am clear about the places that I would certainly be going. New York, Chicago, California for the wine tasting experience, Utah to get lost with nature and at least one National park, Arkansas with a concert at Walmart Music pavilion, Kentucky to stay with a university friend and visiting family in Massachusetts & Michigan. Feel much more informed, thanks to you.

    1. Thank you Subhashish, I'm very happy you enjoyed this post. And I'm glad you have new places to add to your US trip!

  4. Wow, I'm realizing how many places I still have to see. This is truly a country with so much to see and so many things to do. The huge twine is kind of funny. I love all the wonders of nature and so far my favourites states have been Arizona and Utah (and my home state CA of course). I just love all the slot canyons, hoodoos and beautiful scenery.

  5. Wow - this is a great list for future reference for a trip to the US (pinned it for later). Thanks for putting in a lot of work. Your post reminded me that I should set up this interview at the US embassy to get a visa for the US. We have these problematic stamps from Sudan and Iran in the passport and do not quailfy for the waiver anymore. But I would really like to visit the US National Parks.

    1. Thanks Natashca, I really hope you can get in one day too. The national parks are truly incredible in the USA

  6. Wow this list is so big and has so many great ideas. It would be perfect for those who are planning a trip - thank you so much for sharing.

  7. This is super helpful. Appreciate that you listed them by state and alphabetically. We're planning to visit Alaska next and love the idea of whale watching in Juneau and of course, see Santa's workshop.

  8. Wow what a fantastic list. This post is very detailed and informative. I've got a usa bucket list and have now had to add a few more places to it thanks to this list.

  9. This is such a cool list! I must admit I would love to see Arizona for the Antelope Canyon, it looks fantastic. But in general there is something great in every state.

  10. What a fantastic list! Oh my gosh how exciting would it be to visit every state?! I think it's so cool and a wonderful way to experience other cultures and lifestyles.

  11. Wow what a long bucket list, there's something for everyone. I've done a lot of the California and New York ones and a few others but not too many x

    1. I tried to include as much as possible for all types of travelers! I've done plenty of the New York list, and a few of the others

  12. Oh wow, that's loads of places to visit and plenty to see and do. I really liked Universal Studios last time I visited. I'd love to go back with the kids. I would probably add a fair few other places from this list to tire them out each day.

  13. Although I don't currently have any vacations there scheduled, I will definitely take this list into consideration just in case. To make picking a destination and an activity easier, I appreciate you breaking this information down by state. There must be a lot to see in the USA, I'm pretty sure. However, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Utah, and Ohio seem the most appealing to me based on the description.

  14. Reviewing your USA bucket list by state showed me there are a number of states we need to plan to visit. We thought we had visited far more. I love the variety of sights you included for each state. We could do a tour by type of site to visit or mix it up in each state. We really need to get Alaska and Colorado onto our planning board. Glad we finally got to Hawaii this year. A trip along the Mississippi would pick up some missing states for us. A great guide for road trip planning

  15. This is a great list of things to do in every state in America. I have yet to travel there. When I do, I will definitely like to visit New York and San Francisco first. After visiting all the attractions of New York it would be nice to take a scenic drive through the Hudson Valley and see the nature around the city as well.

    1. That's a great idea Joanna, you can get a good idea of what the country really has to offer 😀

  16. As an American, I can verify this list is awesome! I'm from New York and I was surprised (in a good way) to see that not only NYC was listed but also Buffalo. This allows people to see the entire state of NY and not just the city, which many people only ever see. One day I'd love to go to all 50 states, so I'll bookmark this post for another time.

    1. Thank you Alice, that makes me happy to read! I could have included a lot more in New York state and maybe I will add to it 🙂

  17. What an amazing list, I bet this would be amazing to tick them all off. Certainly a great way to plan a few road trips

  18. This list is AMAZING! I’ve always wanted to do like a road trip a crossed the states with my family or just explore more of the surrounding states that we’ve never visited before. So this would make a great road map! Thank you so much for reading!

    1. Thank you Whitney! I really worked hard on it and I hope you get to tick some of these off 😀
