7 best USA summer vacations to escape the heat

Last updated on February 10th, 2026.

Summer, after spring, is my second favorite season.

It may be because I’m a summer baby, but generally I love everything about this time of year. On the flip side, there’s a reason why summer doesn’t top my list: the extremely hot weather.

As much as I love the sunshine, I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed being in temperatures of 30°C+.

It’s for this reason why the USA makes a great summer vacation destination. The country has every type of climate to cater to your temperature preference.

In this post, I’ll be sharing some of the best USA summer vacations to escape the heat.

Some of the states on the list do have areas where temperatures can get very hot. However, we’ll be avoiding those places and instead focusing on destinations with cool to moderate summer climates.

If you’re ready, grab a light jacket and some sunscreen; it’s about to get a little cool.

7 best USA summer vacations to escape the heat

1. Alaska

If hot summer weather really isn’t for you, Alaska is a safe bet. Typically, temperatures in the region range from lows of 47°F (7.7°C) to highs of 65°F (18°C) during the summer months.

The state’s ideal if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, as well as being surrounded by nature. Such features make Alaska one of the best places to visit in August in the USA.

Along with Denali National Park, the state’s also home to several pretty towns and cities with scenic backdrops.

Alaska’s capital, Juneau, is one of the most isolated, yet prettiest, in the entire country. Siting at the foot of Mount Roberts, Juneau is home to the remarkable 13mi (21km) Mendenhall Glacier and Tongass National Forest.

Located in the heart of downtown Juneau is the warm and inviting Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites. Minutes’ walk to the restaurants and shops, it’s a charming choice if you plan to spend a few nights in the capital.

In the south of Alaska is the city of Anchorage. Like Juneau, there are plenty of activities for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. Take in the scenery and the lakes, or go camping, at the glorious Chugach State Park.

While in Anchorage, cruise along the fjords of the Kenai National Park and experience the wonder of whales and wildlife.

Complete your cool summer vacation in Anchorage by booking into the Alyeska Resort and Hotel Alyeska.

Its slopeside location may make it feel more like a winter getaway, but it’ll add a touch of well-deserved relaxation.

2. Oregon

The Pacific Northwest region of the USA is blessed with beautiful beaches, dramatic mountain ranges and photogenic vistas.

And in US states like Oregon, you can also expect sunny, but not overwhelmingly, hot temperatures.

In July, average highs can range between 64°F (17.8°C) to 68°F (20°C) on the west coast. On the eastern portion of the state is a completely different picture. Here, you can expect to find higher average temperatures ranging between 81°F (27.2°C) to 94°F (34.4°C).

Home to America’s deepest lake and magnificent caldera, Crater Lake National Park is on the Oregon to-see list.

Temperatures in July reach average highs of 73.4°F (23°C), making comfortable visiting conditions. It’s possible to swim in designated parts of Crater Lake, but brace yourself for the typically cold water.

Activities at Crater Lake don’t stop here. The road surrounding the lake, the Rim Drive, offers uninterrupted views of the volcanic formations. Hiking opportunities are ample, with trails leading to some of the best views of the national park.

After a long day of touring, hiking and swimming, Crater Lake Lodge is a welcoming place to retreat to. Overlooking the brilliant blue lake at Rim Village, it’s a cozy option for accommodation in Crater Lake.

Cannon Beach

No summer vacation’s complete without a trip to the beach, and Oregon is blessed with several. Home to the 235ft sea stack, Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach offers visitors a long, sandy shoreline and plenty more.

From here, you’ve the options to explore further south at Arcadia Beach or head north to Ecola State Park. The hiking trails lead to some isolated beaches offering views of Haystack Rock and the ocean ahead.

One of the prettiest accommodations in the coastal city, and in a picturesque location, is Inn at Cannon Beach.

With comfortable lodgings, the inn’s a 5-minute drive from Tolovana Beach State Park and 15 minutes’ walk to Haystack Rock.

A bonus spot for summer vacations in Oregon is Willamette Valley. The heart of Oregon wine country, the area has over 500 wineries, historic towns and farm-to-table restaurants.

3. Washington

Washington state follows a similar pattern to Oregon in terms of its climate. Summers in the west tend to be cooler and dry, while it’s warmer in the east.

Western parts of Washington can reach average high temperatures of 78°F (25.6°C) in July. Over in the east it’s a much different story. Day temperatures can range from a stifling 105°F (40.6°C) to a scotch bonnet sizzling 115°F (46.1°C).

San Juan Islands

Between the US state of Washington and the Canadian region of Vancouver are the San Juan islands. Though the county’s home to an impressive 172 named islands and reefs, only 3 have a ferry service to/from the mainland.

San Juan, Orcas and Lopez island are popular visitor spots for good reason. Each offers a different range of outdoor activities along with dining and lodging options. The summer months are typically moderate to warm, with peak temperatures of around 71.6°F (22°C) in July.

Hop over to Orcas Island

Orcas Island is one for outdoor enthusiasts. Head to Moran State Park to hike, bike, swim or kayak. The park covers over 5,000 acres of terrain, which includes lakes, forests and hills.

One of the most popular hiking trails is Mount Constitution. Climb to the top of the stone watchtower to enjoy some of the most scenic picture postcard views.

To reach any of the San Juan islands, you need to take the ferry from Anacortes on the mainland. It takes approximately 1 hour to reach San Juan Island, so come well prepared for the trip.

Where to stay on the San Juan Islands

Located in Friday Harbor is the warm and welcoming Trumpeter Inn. The property has complimentary WiFi, private parking and its very own alpaca farm.

An American-style fresh breakfast is served daily, and it’s a central location for reaching the center of town.

Less than 5 minutes’ walk from Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal is the quaint Island Inn at 23 West. Rooms are modern, generously sized and some come with views overlooking the water.

Surround yourself in the tranquil nature of Orcas Island at the delightful Otter’s Pond Bed and Breakfast

Located on a nature reserve, a local chef prepares daily breakfasts using local ingredients. Facilities include a hot tub and visitor garden, while Moran State Park is an easy 3 minutes’ drive away.

4. Maine

New England is a good region of the USA to visit if you’re looking to escape high summer temperatures. With pretty fishing villages, beaches, harbors and seaside towns, Maine has several good vacation spots.

Maine summer destinations

The pretty town of Ogunquit was made for USA summer vacations. Its name translated from the Algonquin Indian language means ‘beautiful place by the sea.’ A fitting name for a town that boasts a sandy beach, fishing village and oceanfront hotels like Terrace by the Sea

Summer temperatures in Ogunquit are warm, ranging from lows of 62.6°F (17°C) to highs of 75°F (24°C) in July.

Further north along the coast is the equally pretty town of Kennebunkport. Its beaches include the sandy Goose Rocks and Arundel Beach.

Enjoy the best vistas of Kennebunkport at the excellent The Lodge on the Cove. Located on a scenic tidal cove, the hotel has an outdoor pool, on-site restaurant and complimentary WiFi.

From Kennebunkport, it’s a short boat ride to see the lighthouse on Goat Island. Accessible by boat, there are no goats here, just an active lighthouse restored to its 1950s architectural style.

Summer temperatures in Kennebunkport are similar to Ogunquit. July’s the warmest month, with highs of 77°F (25°C) and lows of 57.2°F (14°C).

Maine’s national park

The state’s also home to Acadia National Park, which is located on another island. You can take the ferry from the mainland to Bar Harbor, and then continue your journey onwards. If you can avoid visiting in July, however, it’d be wise.

Like other popular visitor destinations around the USA, it’s the busiest time of year to visit. Temperatures can reach a maximum of 77°F (25°C) in July, which is warm, but not sweltering.

5. Vermont

Another US state on the list that’s a tale of 2 climates is Vermont. Day temperatures in July in the center and further south of the state can reach average highs of 81°F (27.2°C).

Mount Mansfield

On the flip side, if you’re looking to escape the heat, a trip to the mountains is your best bet. Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont, and home to several ski resorts such as Smuggler’s Notch Resort. Summer activities centre around hiking, biking, kayaking and fly fishing.

Average high temperatures in Mount Mansfield in July hover around 64.6°F (18°C), so packing light outerwear is essential. If visiting in this month, you should also be prepared for some wet weather.

Previous rainfall recordings in July have ranged from 5" (127mm) to 6" (152.4mm). Thunderstorms also tend to be a frequent occurrence especially in the mountains.

Gondola Skyride

The easiest, and some would say laziest, way to reach the peak of Mount Mansfield is the Gondola Skyride. The cable car takes you from the base of Stowe Mountain Resort all the way to the top.

Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding scenery before arriving at the peak. As you step out, follow the aroma of piping hot waffles courtesy of The Waffle. Topped with maple syrup or chocolate sauce, it’s a good way of boosting your energy before beginning a long hike.

The Gondola Skyride usually runs from 18 June until 17 October each year. However, check the website to see the most up-to-date information and ticket prices.

A detour to Stowe

Close by Mount Mansfield is the mountain resort town of Stowe. It has a variety of outdoor as well as indoor activities to make your Vermont summer vacation a memorable one.

The spa at Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa provides the perfect place to rest, relax and pamper yourself.

Boasting over 150 signature healing and anti-ageing treatments and 30 treatment rooms, you’re in very good hands here.

If a spa day isn’t your thing, maybe you’d enjoy joining a brewery guided tour instead. Stowe’s home to a few, and the tour includes visiting each one, while sampling the craft beer and ciders.

Where to stay in Stowe

Experience a piece of Austria in Vermont at the Trapp Family Lodge.

Named after the Von Trapp family from the Sound of Music, the Austrian-inspired lodge suits every kind of traveler. Treat yourself to a room with a mountain view and explore the hiking trails and wineries nearby.

An equally charming choice in Stowe is the Hob Knob.

A historic inn surrounded by beautiful forests, it’s an inviting accommodation in town. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and visitor gardens. The Stowe Mountain Ski Resort is 5.2mi (8.4km) away.

6. Wyoming

A state filled with rocky backdrops, grand lakes and state and national parks, Wyoming’s a great USA summer vacation spot.

The state’s another tale of two climates when it comes to summer. It gets quite hot in the lower parts of the Bighorn Basin, and in the lower elevations of Wyoming. This particularly applies to the central and northeast regions, and along the eastern border.

The state’s blessed with 2 ginormous national parks: Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Like the state’s differing climates, the high temperatures apply depending on which activities you want to do.

July’s the warmest, and driest, month to visit Grand Teton National Park. While temperatures reach average highs of 77°F (25°C), it still makes for a comfortable visit. In and around the rivers and lakes, the temperatures are cooler with the water reaching highs of 60°F (16°C).

Typically known for its ski resorts, Jackson Hole transforms into a popular vacation spot come summer. Like Grand Teton, the temperature depends on the kind of activities you choose.

Escape the heat of the day by booking a scenic raft trip along Snake River. The river winds beneath the shadow of the Tetons, taking you past ranch lands, and letting you enjoy the scenery. A boat ride along the canyon also lets you catch a glimpse of the wildlife, which include elk and bison.

If you prefer to stay on dry land, consider visiting Mill Iron Ranch. A family-owned and operated ranch, they run activities such as horseback riding in summer and sleigh rides in winter.

Located at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Grand Teton National Park is just 2mi (1.6km) away.

7. Montana

A state defined by its vast terrain and home to 2 national parks, Montana has plenty of summer vacation potential.

July is typically the hottest month of the year. To the east of the state, average high temperatures can range between 75°F (23.9°C) and 88°F (31.1°C). July can also be a little damp, but rainfall tends to be on the lighter side.

Glacier National Park

Arguably one of the best vacation spots in Montana is a trip to Glacier National Park. Though July and August tend to be the busiest times to visit, temperatures are bearable at around 71.6°F (22°C).

A park that encompasses mountains, meadows, lakes and over 700 miles of trails, there’s plenty here to hold your attention.

One of the park’s highlights is driving through the Going-to-the-Sun-Road. Closed to visitors during the winter months, the road usually opens in late June or early July. With its twisting turns and narrow lanes, entrance to Going-to-the-Sun-Road requires a park pass and an entry reservation ticket.

Where to stay in and around Glacier National Park

Within the grounds of Glacier National Park are several accommodation types ranging from motor inns to rustic cabins. Choices include the Village Inn at Agpar, Lake McDonald Lodge and Many Glacier Hotel.

Outside the park grounds, but still within close distance, are alternative places to stay. Firebrand Hotel is a modern, yet cozy, option located in Whitefish, Montana.

From here, it takes around 35 minutes to reach West Glacier in Glacier National Park.

Also located in Whitefish, and less than 30 minutes’ drive from the park, is Hampton Inn & Suites Whitefish.

Unwind after a long day of activities in the indoor saltwater pool and whirlpool. Rooms are spacious and come with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
