3 days in the Alto Minho Portugal

Portugal is one of my all-time favorite destinations.
On this trip, we spent some time exploring the Alto Minho Portugal. A region in the north of the country, it sits close to the border with Spain.
One area I'd been keen to visit for a while, finally my chance had arrived.
Our guide during our visit was an animated, yet informative, local called Francisco.
His witty nature, together with his excellent historical knowledge of the Alto Minho, made the trip even more enjoyable.
3 days in the Alto Minho Portugal
Day one
Start at Viana do Castelo
We went straight from the airport in Porto to the capital city of the Alto Minho, Viana do Castelo. The journey took around 1 hr, 10 mins by car.
A Portuguese love story
A theme of love and romance is evident in the region’s architecture and history, particularly in the tale of the city’s name.
A young man waits to see Anna, a beautiful girl he's in love with, but whose father never allows her out of the house. One day, he finally catches a glimpse of her from the castle, and there the story ends.
Hence, Viana do Castelo literally means ‘I saw Anna from the castle’.
Be wowed at the Santuário de Santa Luzia
Our next stop was the Santuário de Santa Luzia. It offers some of the best views overlooking the city, and is highly recommended. The views, however, are only one of many ‘wow’ factors.
There's a grand church, with steps decreasing in size as you reach the entrance. Inside, the ceiling's a work of art in itself, with intricate detailing and a colorful interior.

Convento de Sant’Ana
We drove back down the winding road and made our first trip into the city to Convento de Sant’Ana. It was a former convent, but now runs as a retirement home.

The building was constructed in the 16th century. Mass still takes place in the church, and it also acts as a mini museum.
Paintings produced by the nuns depicting stories from the bible adorn the walls. There's one painting that's set in ‘Jerusalem’ but with a touch of Viana do Castelo.
The story of Jesus turning water into wine features the iconic blue and white vases commonly associated with the city.
Unique features
Seats with painted faces called ‘Mercies’ line the walls. They were a place for church-goers to lean against when the prayers went on for too long.
Splashes of gold at the front end of the church reflects the Baroque period. The blue and white tiling was also significant of the era. Each tile section doubles in size, giving the appearance of an optical illusion.

Pause at Praia do Cabedelo
There's something quite uplifting about visiting a sandy beach in mid-October. The praia (beach) was empty, with the occasional windsurfer riding the water.
In the glorious autumn sunshine, the sandy shore appears to stretch for miles, merging with the rocks and greenery in the distance.
The praia is only one part of the attraction. Rui, the owner of shop and watersports school, Viana Locals, plans to expand upon the current class schedule.
A taste of the local cuisine
That day, we sampled our first taste of the Alto Minho, with some freshwater clams in a garlic and wine broth. The main course was equally as satisfying with sea bream served with baby potatoes and a light dressing.
There was just enough room for a dessert of crepes served with ‘sweet eggs’ and ice cream.
The meal was completed by a vinho verde (green wine) of the Loureiro grape variety. Compared to the Alvarinho wine, this is more floral and lighter in taste and smell.

Relax at Hotel Flôr de Sal
The hotel, Flôr de Sal, is conveniently located near to the center of Viana do Castelo.
It has a fitness center, spa facilities, meeting rooms and even a mini art gallery in the reception area. If possible, choose a room overlooking the river – it's a great view to wake up too.
The hotel's also easily accessible to the Ecopista do Rio Minho. This is the bike/walking trail that for the most part follows alongside the river Minho. Run, bike or walk, it's a great way to familiarize yourself with the local area.

Explore Caminha
The small town of Caminha has one standout landmark. Its church, Igreja de Matriz is a truly unmissable sight. It may appear like any typical church from the outside, but you'll realize the opposite upon entering.
An architectural mix of Gothic-Renaissance styles, the church has a distinctive Moorish feel, particularly on the ceiling. The Gothic influence is extended on the exterior roof by the stone gargoyles typical of the time.

Our base for our stay was the 4-star Hotel Minho, located in the town of Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Meaning ‘new town of the stag’, the village's history with the deer, and the legend of the king stag, is evident. The village is also known for its artistic angle, with art galleries and sculptures in the main center.

I was lucky to see the grand ‘cervo’ metal structure high above the town. It's quite a sight in person, and if you get the opportunity to see it, go.
There's no bird song or people, just nature and a stunning view.
The structure's a fair distance from ground level so I'd suggest taking a car. Hiking and biking devotees may enjoy the challenge of getting to the top. Whatever your means, just make sure you don't miss it.

Day two
Learn more at the Fortaleza de Valença do Minho
Day two began with a visit to the impressive Fortaleza de Valença do Minho. The city has strong links to its medieval fortress. It was built in 1200 under the order of the first king of Portugal, Sancho I.
Formerly called Contrasta, the city became known under its current name of Valença in 1262. The fort today contains a mixture of residential houses, shops, cafes and restaurants.
A focal point is the iconic blue house in the center. This differs from the rest, as the tiles used on the exterior of the building are engraved not painted, making it more unique.

Visit Palácio da Brejoeira
Luís Pereira Velho de Moscoso built the Palácio da Brejoeira at the beginning of the 19th century. The palace was a gift to the current owner, Lady Herminia de Oliveira de Paes, from her father on her 18th birthday.
Plenty of wine
Palácio da Brejoeira is home to an impressive vineyard and winery. The palace is also one of the oldest wine producers of the popular Alvarinho grape wine. While its winery used to make red wine just for the palace, it now only makes the Alvarinho variety.
A bottle of wine costs €13 ($14/£9)*; 3 bottles €26 ($29/£18)*; the cognac €57.50 ($63/£41*) and a bottle of brandy €30 ($33/£21*). Well-kept over the years, the palace has maintained many of its original features.
Explore the palace grounds
As well as an indoor winter garden, there's also a library and a waiting room decorated with 200-year old curtains.
The dining room holds particular historic significance too. It's where Spanish Prime Minister General Franco and Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, met on 26 September 1950.
The palace’s grounds are equally remarkable with a Camellia (20 varieties) garden. It's based on an English garden design with a clandestine lovers’ seat hidden by tall maze-like hedges.
My favorite part is the artificial island constructed in the shape of a heart. Small details such as the ‘bark’ branches made from concrete and not real wood, add an extra charming touch.

Have lunch at Hotel Convento dos Capuchos
Another former convent, Hotel Convento dos Capuchos had several renovations before becoming the hotel it is today.
Much of the hotel has retained many of the convent’s original features. Rooms strike the right balance between modern living and traditional design.
The highlight, however, was the grand lunch served in the hotel’s restaurant. We wolfed down traditional dishes like Caldo Verde and more contemporary plates such as beef cheeks. To top off the meal, the chef himself served us a glass of wine to compliment each course.

Relax at Termas de Melgaço
Feeling a little heavier and my jeans more snug, a visit to a medical spa after lunch seemed ideal.
Termas de Melgaço is a medical spa that specializes in curing diabetes. The building was first built in 1868 and opened to the public in 2013.
It offers treatments using the local mineral water, which is processed with carbon dioxide and any iron is removed.
Depending on the doctor’s diagnosis, patients undergo a specialized treatment. This could be the steam machine, called the Bertholaix, or the banco de contraste, which helps to improve circulation.
The season ranges from April/May to September/October depending on the demand. The pool area's fully equipped to enable disabled and people with handicaps, meaning it's accessible for all.

Enjoy a wine tasting at MQ Vinhos
From water to wine, the final stop of the day was MQ Vinhos in Monção.
Its owner, Miguel, showed us around his impressive vineyard and small yet modern winery. He began making wine after inheriting the farm from his grandmother.
Though a small scale project, it has a high value concept. More than 10,000 bottles were produced in 2015. Naturally, the highlight of the visit was sampling the award-winning Alvarinho wine, Vale dos Ares.

Day three
After the indulgent 4-course lunches and dinners over the last few days, I was happy for a spot of exercise. Armed with my helmet and hired bike from our hotel, I was ready to hit the Ecopista do Rio Minho.
Signage directing cyclists and walkers to the Ecopista are not altogether clear, so pay attention when on the roads.

Once you’ve reached it however, you simply follow the route to any of the neighboring villages or cities. I made it all the way to Valença – a real achievement considering I hadn’t cycled anywhere in years. Three hours later (I got lost), I made it to the fort. There, I snacked on a ton of sugary foods before heading back home.
Suffice it to say, the trail's an ideal way to not only see another side of the region, but also to be closer to nature. It isn’t often that a flashpacker like me gets outdoors that often, and I enjoyed every second.
Time to unwind
My body sore, I went back to the hotel (35 minutes this time around) before heading to the spa to unwind.
A massage was the perfect way to end the day, and our time spent exploring the far north of Portugal. With another memorable visit to the country, it won't be another 2 years before I return.

We are planning a trip back to Portugal this year and are looking for some new places to add to our list. So I wanted to check out Alto Minho. We never went north of Porto when we visited last time. I think I would follow your lead and book a great hotel with a sea view. Definitely a spot we need to plan for a few days.

I think I’d spend a lot of time sipping wine but when I’m not doing that I’d like to visit the churches and try that crepes with sweet eggs and ice cream! The love story is both sweet and funny that it ended with him just seeing her from afar! 😁

This looks like a really interesting area with some wonderful architecture. Palácio da Brejoeira looks fabulous - I didn't get anything like that for my 18th! And its own vineyard! Cycling is a great way to explore, I agree - especially if there is a spa and a massage at the end. Sounds like a great trip.

I visited Portugal many years ago but didn’t get to the north and Alto Minho. It looks beautiful with all the history and gorgeous architecture but it’s the food that did it for me. It all looks delicious and I love clams, sea bream, beef cheeks and crepes. Wouldn’t mind trying the Alvarinho wine too.

Portugal is terribly underrated in Western Europe! I've never heard of Alto Minho before but the entire place is just giving me a calm, relaxed vibe with some medieval elements emanating from the palaces and castles all around. I'd love to visit and check out all these sights that the city has to offer.

Alto Minho is definitely my kind of place. A little bit of history, and a lot of relaxation, at any of the hotels you have recommended. One of my classmates is Portuguese, and I can understand why she says, that Portugal is so beautiful, after seeing it for myself in your photos.
The Alto Minho is my favourite part of Portugal. Most prefer the south, but the north has more allure for me!

That's a romantic but incomplete story - he saw Anna in the castle and what? Hehe, I can't believe that is what the name of the city means! But I love little stories and tales like these, helps one put some character to a place. I agree, there is romance and love in the architecture or at least from what I can see in your pictures. I have personally never heard of Alto Minho but then I have never even been to Portugal so I am not surprised. I love the sound of freshwater clams in garlic and wine broth - yum!

I agree--beaches in October are the best! The older I get, the less I feel the need to swim at every beach lol--but I still totally want to walk on them! Photographing them with fewer people around is another bonus. I have never heard of Alto Minho before, but we are totally hoping to plan a (long) trip back to Portugal at some point, so we'll have to add it to our list!

I think that one of my favorite things to do in Alto Minho would be to pass by the MQ Vinhos in Monção. I love wine tastings and learning more about how wine is made in different parts of the world. If there's a winery where I'm traveling, I will be going there. 🙂 I love the location of your hotel and also the yummy dishes you have had during this trip. Alto Minho definitely looks like a great place if you are looking for some peace and quiet.

Alto Minho looks beautiful. Your stay seems to be perfect from the amazing hotel rooms and locations it was surrounded in. The food looks yum too. I like the fact that are lots of outdoor activities to do, and i love the cute story of the girl named Ana.
I love when towns are named after these old stories, it makes me feel slightly nostalgic for my storybook days as a child! You need to try the food there because it's so damn good!
What a wonderful place and I particularly liked The praia beach, the way to the beach is so serene, dead dropping gorgeous. Lovely mention to the Blue House, being an admirer or architecture I am so impressed with the house. Such a lovely place. I can't get enough out of Alto Minho in three days. I'd rather dedicate a month to explore the city of love and winery. The hotel seems to be my type of hotel too.
Lucky for us in Europe we're able to visit somewhere for 3 days. Having said that, I could live in the Alto Minho, so a lifetime would suit me better 😀
Looks like a fab time; the photo of the sun over the river is just glorious. Cycling around in between delicious food sounds like the perfect way to see Alto Minho (or indeed anywhere!) The old churches look amazing too I always love wandering around them!

I'm on a road trip through Portugal at the moment, you may have inspired me to spend more time in Northern Portugal. Viana do Castelo, is a city a didn't know much about but it reads like it's full of interesting history. I understand why you went on a bike ride after enjoying the Portuguese food! There's a similar route in the Algarve which I ran a part of, it was well signposted though this one!

Portugal and Spain both are very gorgeous and this place is on border of both countries, so it should be super beautiful. The walking and cycling track along Ecopista with blue water is beautiful. Francisco made you trip more easier and I also agree to hire a local guide to get the true feeling of locals.
Francisco was the best guide, and we were lucky to have him with us. He gave us so many interesting facts about the area and made the trip memorable.

Amazing and Portugal is one country that I have been fascinated with for the longest time, but just have not been able to visit. You really managed to cover a lot and all different activities into three days including all that food, which is something I adore. Having a local guide is the best especially if they have a real interest in sharing information and taking the guests to places that are off the beaten track.

Portugal! Such a beautiful and romantic place... even their language is romantic. The Santuário de Santa Luzia is just amazing! I love the vibrant colors and details. The iconic blue house is also really pretty! No wonder it stands out. I wouldn't mind living there! So Instagrammable! The spa you went to looks interesting. Even if I didn't have diabetes, I would love to pay it a visit!
