3 nights at Hotel Minho
Last updated on February 3rd, 2026.
The sun had already set by the time we arrived at Hotel Minho in the Alto Minho region in Portugal.
Exhausted after a full day itinerary, it was comforting to arrive at the place we'd be calling home for the next few nights.
An illuminated deer on a wooden structure – signposting the area’s long-time history with the animal – greeted us on arrival.
Scandinavian style at Hotel Minho
The wooden design in some parts of the hotel are more Scandinavian in feel.
The lounge, with its simple yet chic furnishings in hues of red, green and blue reinforce this, as do the small touches like the wooden deer on the walls.
However, this is where the northern European similarities end and where southern European warmth shines through.
To say that the staff at Hotel Minho are extremely helpful doesn't do them justice. The service is exceptional and extends well beyond its 4-star rating.
The hotel director, manager, and the rest of the front-of-house team are accommodating and always helpful. Nothing's too farfetched – within reason of course, and their patience and first-class hospitality made me sad to leave.
Here are 5 excellent reasons why you should consider booking Hotel Minho for your trip to this region of northern Portugal.
3 nights at Hotel Minho, Portugal
A great location
Hotel Minho is in the picturesque town of Vila Nova de Cerveira in the Alto Minho region of Portugal.
Sitting very close to the border with Spain (Galicia), staying at Hotel Minho is ideal for exploring the region, and then heading onwards across the border.
How to reach Hotel Minho
The nearest airports to reach the hotel are Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, Portugal (about 1 hour’s drive) or Vigo airport in Spain. Personally, I found flight prices to and from Porto much cheaper and with more availability than Vigo.
Train travel from São Bento in Porto to Vila Nova de Cerveira takes approximately 2 hours, offering a scenic way to see the country.
To get the most from your time in the Alto Minho however, I recommend hiring a car. There are endless number of vineyards, historic sites of interest, and restaurants to discover.
Dreamy room views
One of the simplest pleasures is to stay somewhere with a wonderful view – and Hotel Minho doesn't disappoint.
Enjoy the views from the huge private balcony in your room. A big, concrete space with views overlooking the green Portuguese landscape, it's the perfect spot for some quiet reflection.
The view's even more breathtaking first thing in the morning. You're guaranteed a comfortable night's sleep with a generous sized bed, and mammoth pillows to sink into.
The bathroom's also a good size with a large walk-in shower stocked with complimentary toiletries.

A gorgeous spa at Hotel Minho
Don't miss an opportunity to visit the hotel's spa. Surrounded by trees, woodland and close to the River Minho, it's a peaceful setting for some serious relaxation.
The design's an extension of the Scandinavian wooden-themed design. You'll find the typical spa facilities though with a slight twist.
More inside
Take the full-length pool. It’s not only for there for swimming, but also has 2 jet sprays at one end allowing for a neck and shoulder water massage. Ignite the sprays by pressing a poolside button, and let the water pressure soothe away any tension.
My favorite, however, is the Jacuzzi. A press of the button ignites a bubble frenzy, while you hold onto a steel curve and let the bubbles send you into relaxation overdrive.
After a considerable amount of time in the steam and sauna room, your skin feels hydrated, plus you leave with a healthy glow. However, the best was yet to come when I arrived for my massage.
The massage at Hotel Minho
Prior to the massage, my therapist, Alexandra, poured me a glass of ginger tea before leading me to the treatment room.
A transition in design from west to east, I immediately felt I was in a Balinese sanctuary. I had the signature massage – a 50-minute treatment (€50/£36/$55*) that uses a blend of honey-based oils.
At the end of the massage, my body, and mind, were completely at ease. Once I'd managed to wean myself from the bed, I followed Alexandra to the relaxation room, drank some more ginger tea before returning to the outside world.
Great dining options at Hotel Minho
Going hungry, or even feeling hungry, is simply not possible at Hotel Minho. I began my days by filling up on the superb breakfast in the dining room, followed by dinner in the next door restaurant, Braseirão do Minho.
Breakfast includes the usual morning staples of toast, cereals, pastries, tea and coffee. Anyone feeling more gluttonous can request a cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon or sausages. Portions are generous and will take you all the way to lunchtime or beyond.
Braseirão do Minho
Braseirão do Minho dishes up northern Portuguese home-style cooking in a gourmet dining fashion. Beautifully presented, each course is a bigger and better party in your mouth.
The most notable dishes were the superbly tender Polvo à lagareiro (octopus) and the deer served with thinly sliced potatoes and a delicate gravy.
Local wines
We drank bottles of the famous Vinho Verde wines of the region to accompany the meal. This was followed at the end by either a port wine, or the popular Portuguese liquor, Beirao.
You won't be surprised to read that my jeans fit a little more snug after 3 evenings of exquisite wining and dining, but it was totally worth it.
The experience wouldn’t have been so memorable had it not been for the amazing staff at the restaurant. They delivered first-class service, and were also extremely patient when we stayed beyond closing time.
Free bikes to explore the area
Hotel Minho is conveniently located near the Ecopista, a trail that runs along the path of the nearby river and connects to other towns.
A bike's the best way to get from one town to another; something that the reception are happy to help you with. It took me over 2 hours to cycle to Valença, after which my butt was never the same.
In spite of this, cycling the trail is so liberating and something I highly recommend. Forget your level of fitness; just grab your helmet, a bottle of water, and go.
Time to relax
There's no better way to unwind after a day’s cycle, then with a glass or 3 of vinho at the hotel bar. The bar’s on the ground floor next to the lounge.
If you’re as lucky as we were during our stay, you’ll get to meet bartender and all-round wine expert, Bruno. He served us some of the most delicious wines from the region, as well as an interesting fact or two on each bottle.
Stop thinking, just go
If my intentions weren't clear from this post, I couldn't be more praising of our stay at Hotel Minho. From the rooms to the facilities and the staff, I'd return in a heartbeat.
Moreover, its location is ideal for exploring the neighboring towns of Valença, Caminha, Monção and Melgaço. On top of this, you can easily continue your travels into Spain.
Portugal for me, and particularly the charm of the north, continues to entice me to return, and Hotel Minho is only the icing on the cake.

This sounds so luxurious and relaxing. The perfect spa weekend. I would love to visit if I travel to Portugal. The food sounded delicious.
It's incredible! And the food is amazing too.
This looks like a fantastic hotel. I love that there is an amazing view. And the spa and massage sound so relaxing. But the best part is definitely the food! I can't resist a hotel with a great restaurant. I hope to be able to visit here some day.
The food's spectacular! I loved my time here so much, and I'm certain you will too.
I used to live in Norway and this place definitely had Scandinavian vibes. I love that the breakfast options were plentiful and dinner looks absolutely amazing. I really want to try that Monkfish with rice and I've never had deer before.
The deer is one of the best things I've ever eaten. I'm sure people may not share my opinion, but it was cooked so well and very melt in the mouth!
Hi Lisa, these posts represent the perfect combination of two different styles. I love the interior and the jacuzzi is so charming. Amazing and fairly detailed review 🙂
Thanks Daniele! I loved my time here, and encourage others to visit and stay here if ever in the north of Portugal.
It really is a nice and beautiful hotel, which is definitely my style! You're right that it looks a little Scandinavian and it doesn't look at all that you're in Portugal! The hotel owners did a great job, I think they really make a difference in this way with other hotels in the region. A nice hotel to stay at during a round trip through Portugal!
It's very Scandinavian! And yes, a lovely choice for this part of the country too.
Wow, this is such a well written Hotel review. I haven't heard about Hotel Minho before and seemed to be really a perfect place to distress and enjoy all the comfort that it has to offer. The food as well looks really tempting and very luscious, which I would love to try If I get the chance. That wooden deer structure is something I would love to gaze at before letting my body kiss the comforting bed. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
You're welcome! And thank you for the kind words, it means a lot to me 🙂
You'e right. This hotel has 'oh, what a view'. Hotel Minho in Alto Minho is a place where you must go at least once in life. The Scandinavian style can be seen in each small detail. The Portuguese charm is right there, in the middle of the nature and the hospitality of the people. Even if it's a hot country, I wouldn't miss the spa and sauna there.
It's beautiful, and the region is a real must-see too. I hope you get to see it for yourself!
This looks like a lovely and a unique hotel. The food layout is gorgeous.
The mousse looked very interesting and is very different. I would definitely try it ?
I love stay- action type resorts with spa/ jacuzzi/ massage - who would not like?
Lovely post
Thank you! It's a great hotel, and the food's incredible too.
Looks amazing! Portugal is sooo on my bucket list so am book marking this hotel. And funny how I don't normally have breakfast on a day to day basis but when I'm travelling, that's my biggest meal. Kind of need something substantial to start a huge day ahead!
You won't be disappointed with this breakfast, it's so good! And get to Portugal soon, I love it there.
Oh I think it looks awesome! That pool though! It's always the hotels with nice pools that stick out in my memory. And wit the jets, that must have been so nice. For sure jealous of your massage! Time to book me one!
Enjoy! I loved my time here, and yes, the spa is very nice!
Looks like a beautiful place! I always go right to the breakfast photos in hotel posts, lol--sounds like you're not likely to go hungry there! Portugal is high on our wish list, maybe we'll finally make it next year.
You'll love it! It's one of my favourites to return to; I always enjoy the food 😀
I traveled from Porto straight through to the Galicia region of Spain. I hadn't really investigated what to do in northern Portugal but Vila Nova de Cerveira sounds interesting and beautiful. Hotel Minha looks like the perfect place to stay. A little walk from the train station is fine, Portugal has such a beautiful countryside and the view from the hotel is worth the walk! The breakfast looks good, I love the Portuguese bread!
You'll love this area, and hotel too I promise! As it's a more remote area, Hotel Minho gives great rates. If you fly from Vigo airport in Galicia, you can just take the train across to northern Portugal and Vila Nova de Cerveira 🙂
I love Portugal but have never visited this area. The hotel looks amazing! Between the views, the food and that spa, I'm ready to start packing right now!
Ah that's wonderful to hear! You'll have such a good time, and won't regret going 😀
What a nice and detailed review of the accommodation! I can see the mixture between Scandinavian and Portuguese style in the decoration. I've been to Portugal but haven't visited this area yet. Would love to check out this place!
I really hope you get to see it for yourself. It's a wonderful hotel, and the area's probably my favourite in Portugal 😀
I've been in some amazing hotels lately and a lot have that modern Scandinavian style! Specifically if you look up The Castle hotel in Orlando, FL. You'll see what I'm talking about! This is so interesting. My mom is an interior designer so this all makes me so so happy!!
That sounds like a great tip Tatum, thank you! Yes, I love the minimalist style, and the location is just stunning on top of it.
Hotel Minho sounds like a fun getaway location! I'd love to soak up in that spa and swim around that pool. And those views! Portugal is looking more and more like my next destination!
Yes! That's the kind of response I want to hear. You'll have such a good time, I just know it!
Sounds like this hotel has it all! At first sight, the building did not give me a great first impression but with your good words changed my mind. Ideal location, panoramic room views, a modern and luxe spa, and delicious food makes the perfect getaway to rest a bit in between destinations! Cozy and peaceful. Next time I go to Portugal, I'll try and look hotel availability in this heaven retreat. All best, -Mariella
I totally understand Mariella, and this is probably my fault. Back then I had a worse camera phone haha, and this probably shows in my photos! Glad my words were able to change your mind 🙂
You always find the best and most unique places to stay in. This is one of the coolest accommodation I've seen in terms of style and the architecture. I love that spa - it looks so refreshing. The food looks amazing too!
Thank you, I try haha! Honestly, Hotel Minho may not look much on the outside, but its sleek and minimal design in superb. And yes, the food is pretty epic too!
What a cute hotel in such a lovely, relaxing location! I'm just in love with the design and character of the place. The pool looks so amazing, and that food... Can you say YUM? 🙂 Would love to go here someday. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Anna, the food really is yum and the pool is divine. Thanks for commenting.
Hotel Minho looks like a nice getaway and it has unique design. Lounge and pool looks appealing. View from top is really worthwatching. Breakfast is also with lots of variety.
It's definitely one to remember! Breakfast is so filling.
It looks so Nordic - and must be a totally one of a kind hotel in Portugal! I love the design, the wood makes everything look so modern and crisp, and the deer on the walls are super cute (and much better than actual deer heads!). The spa looks incredible too - what an absolutely great hotel!
Thanks Vicki, it's a pretty hotel and the spa is so lush too. If you ever visit, do let me know!
Wow, I'm loving the interior design of the Hotel Minho! They have a really great theme going on, and that pool/jacuzzi looks super relaxing. I enjoyed reading about the breakfast, haha I love when hotels have a great breakfast spread!
You're not alone Kim! I ate so much, my jeans were much tighter by the end of the trip! Thanks for your comment 🙂
Oh my gosh it looks like such a beautiful spot. That spa area looks so fantastic though! I really love the decor as well, minimalist but modern!
Hotel Minho is a beautiful hotel, and the location's perfect for a quiet getaway. It's not bad for a bit of romance too 😉
This looks like an awesome place to stay! Love the jacuzzi - a little slice of heaven! That mousse looks pretty awesome too 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
It is very awesome Katie! Do consider it if you go to the Alto Minho, you won't be disappointed.
The jacuzzi and the massage are bonuses for me. I love the Scandinavian style of the interior as it looks modern yet traditional. The best part is that the staff are friendly and helpful. I'll keep this hotel in mind when I get the chance to see Alto Minho.
You must! Hotel Minho is so pretty and in a beautiful part of Portugal. Thanks for your comment.
This sounds like the perfect getaway to explore areas near the border with Spain, and of course having a look at nearby Spanish areas also. It is always lovely to read reviews which focus on the staff and service, rather than just a run down on the facilities and amenities. Having said that, the descriptions and photos you have shared certainly highlight how comfortable this hotel is. Would love to stay here when in the area.
Thanks Nicole for your kinds words. It's such a pretty hotel, and in a gorgeous quiet area of northern Portugal. If you ever do make it there, please let me know!
