12 beautiful islands where Italians vacation
Last updated on May 20th, 2026.
There’s a good reason why Italy consistently features on many people’s travel lists.
The country boasts an extensive coastline that stretches over 50,000 miles and is dotted with over 200 islands.
Italy is also home to two of the largest islands in the Mediterranean plus some smaller, and lesser frequented islands.
From its rich history and ancient sites to its pretty beaches and picture postcard landscapes, Italy is a dream destination.
In this post, I'll be sharing 12 beautiful islands where Italians vacation. Perfect for summer or fall travel, the hardest part will be deciding which one you want to visit.
An ideal post that provides plenty of Italy bucket list inspiration, use this guide to help plan your Italy trip.
12 beautiful islands where Italians vacation
1. Sicily (Sicilia)
Sicily is one place I know very well. Along with being one of the islands where Italians vacations, it’s where we spend August in Italy.
The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily really has something for everyone. Located just off the ‘toe’ of the Italian boot, Sicily is a melting pot of cultures and influences.
Once home to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, the architecture and ruins that remain are a testament to its rich history.
Knowing when to visit Sicily isn't as straightforward as you might think.
Sicily’s hot summer climate can become extreme, and unbearable, especially if visiting in August. However, the temperatures make the island an ideal choice if looking for an Italian vacation that consists of plenty of sunbathing and swimming.
Some of our favorite beaches in Sicily include the ones dotted around Isola delle Correnti and on Favignana.
The diversity
But what makes Sicily stand out as a popular travel destination for many Italians is its diversity. Alongside the chance to swim and bathe, there’s plenty in Sicily (free attractions too) to see and do besides visiting the beach.
The island’s home to many cities, towns and villages, each one with its own unique character and history. From the busy, yet beautiful historic cities like Palermo to rustic borghi like Savoca and Taormina, Sicily has everything.
Pack on the pounds
Another big draw for other Italians to visit Sicily is for the food. A food culture I know and enjoy very well, Sicilian food is packed with tons of flavor and fresh ingredients.
But it doesn’t stop there. From granita con panna for breakfast in Sicily to its rich and calorie-laden Sicilian desserts, Sicily is food euphoria.
Where to stay in Sicily
If you want to know which part of Sicily you should base your visit, my guide on 'where to stay in Sicily' is a helpful starting point.
I provide a detailed breakdown of the best places on the island, local attractions as well as hotel recommendation for every budget.
2. Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie)
Located off the northeast coast of Sicily are the magnificent Aeolian Islands. They’re known for their coastal landscapes, pretty beaches and are beautiful islands where Italians vacation.
There are several islands in the group of 8 including Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli and the largest, Lipari. Around a 1-hour ferry ride from (Lipari) mainland Sicily, the islands will not disappoint.
A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unique geological and volcanic features, the islands are worth seeing for yourself.
Lipari
Lipari makes a perfect Sicilian destination as there are plenty of things to do here. It has beaches, a lively marina and a historic center that families will enjoy exploring.
Stromboli
Stromboli, on the other hand, attracts visitors to see its active volcano, an excursion that’s best done by boat. See Stromboli, and neighboring island Panarea, by boat on an evening cruise from Milazzo.
Visitors can hike to the volcano's summit to see its eruptions, as well as explore the island's black sand beaches. Stromboli is also a popular spot for diving and snorkeling.
Salina
Salina is known for producing the famous Malvasia wine, as well as for its charming villages.
The main village, also called Salina, is home to several restaurants, bars and shops. Hikers are sure to enjoy following the island’s well-marked trails to enjoy panoramic views of the island and the sea.
Panarea
Panarea is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and luxurious resorts. It’s also the place to visit if you want to experience the island’s nightlife and high-end restaurants.
Panarea’s center is characterized by traditional whitewashed houses and charming narrow streets. Explore the island by foot or on bicycle, or book a boat tour to visit nearby islands.
Filicudi
Filicudi is a smaller, and lesser visited, island in the Aeolian archipelago. The island has several small villages including Filicudi Port. Popular among hikers, Filicudi has several trails that lead to ancient ruins and scenic viewpoints.
Alicudi
Also worth mentioning is its tinier sister island of Alicudi. Far removed from the tourist path of Sicily, visiting Alicudi is like visiting a bygone era. The local transport consists of a donkey and cart and the island boasts two restaurants, one cafe and a hotel.

3. Egadi Islands (Isole Egadi)
To the western coast of Sicily is the group of the Egadi Islands consisting of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo.
One of the most beautiful islands where Italians vacation, the Egadi Islands offer pure relaxation.
Known for their pretty beaches and translucent blue waters, the Egadi islands also have historical significance. In 241 BC, the Battle of the Egadi Islands was fought between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire.
Favignana
Favignana island is the most popular of the Egadi Islands. Cala Rossa beach is the place to visit for swimming, bathing, snorkeling and diving.
By boat, tour the island’s pretty Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) and the Grotta dei Sospiri (Cave of Sighs). End your day in Favignana by watching the sunset from the rocky promontory of Punta Sottile on the western coast.
To learn about Favignana’s history, visiting its traditional tonnara is a good place to start. The Tonnara di Favignana is a complex of buildings that were used for tuna fishing and processing. Today, it’s a museum where you can learn about the island’s fishing industry.
Levanzo
The smallest of the group, Levanzo, provides some local insight into small island living in Sicily. Explore the picturesque town of Cala Dogana or book a boat trip to visit Grotta del Genovese.
The cave contains prehistoric cave paintings that are believed to be over 10,000 years old. Soak up the sun on the beaches of Cala Fredda and Cala Minnola or hike the trail towards Punta Faraglione.
Marettimo
Marettimo is probably the most remote of the Egadi Islands. If a wild and remote destination appeals to you, Marettimo will be a good fit. An island made for nature and outdoor lovers, Marettimo is home to a nature reserve and hiking trails.
With no roads on the island, transportation is primarily done on foot or by boat. Book a boat tour to visit the nearby Grotta del Cammello sea cave or visit secluded beaches and coves.
4. Pelagie Islands (Isole Pelagie)
Off the southwestern coast of Sicily is the small archipelago of the Pelagie Islands. The three main islands in the group are Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione. As well as being known for their beaches, the Pelagie Islands are also an important migratory stop for many bird species.
Other wildlife to spot in the Pelagie Islands include loggerhead sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals. The islands experience a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers being the norm. It makes Lampedusa one of the best places to spend winter in Italy.
Lampedusa
Lampedusa is the largest and most populous of the group. One of the most beautiful islands where Italians vacation, Lampedusa remains a popular travel destination.
In recent years, Lampedusa has become famous for being an entry point for migrants and refugees arriving by boat.
Given its small size, the island’s ideal for travelers that enjoy slow travel. One of its most popular attractions is the sublime Rabbit Beach (Spiaggia dei Conigli).
Pristine white sand and perfectly clean blue waters invite many to relax on its shores. Away from the beaches is the pretty town of Lampedusa. A small, but picturesque, center, it’s lined with shops, cafes and restaurants.
Linosa
Linosa island is smaller and less developed than Lampedusa. An ideal place to escape the crowds and surround yourself in nature, Linosa makes for a great Sicily day trip.
Pozzolana di Ponente is the island's main beach and is popular among travelers for a good reason. Filled with black volcanic sand, it’s a unique beach to visit in this part of Sicily.
Lampione
Lampione is a small uninhabited island that is roughly 0.2sqr kms in area. Known for its lighthouse that was built in 1891, Lampione is a nature reserve but it’s not open to visitors.
5. Ustica
A small island off the northern coast of Sicily, Ustica ticks the box of unique Italian islands to visit.
For one, the island was used as a former prison during Italy’s fascist period. Ustica is part of a small archipelago but the island’s the only one that’s inhabited.
Most visitors come to Ustica to snorkel, swim, dive and to relax. Cala Sidoti is one such bay from which you can switch off from the world and revel in Ustica’s surroundings. From the top of Torre Punta Spalmatore, you’ll feel like the island is just for you.
6. Sardinia (Sardegna)
If you’re looking for some of the best beaches in Italy, look no further than Sardinia. The second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is one of the most beautiful islands where Italians vacation.
To the north of Sardinia is the famous Costa Smeralda. Dazzling blue waters and plenty of fine, sandy beaches, it’s where many elite Italians like to vacation.
The mesmerizing La Maddalena archipelago is also in northern Sardinia, providing a perfect spot for a boat tour.
In the south of Sardinia, the land is wilder, more rugged but no less beautiful.
Spend a few days in Sardinia’s capoluogo, Cagliari, or drive along the Costa Re and explore the many beaches. An ideal trip for budget travelers, south Sardinia makes an unforgettable vacation.
Land to see
With plenty of forests and mountains to explore, inland Sardinia provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and outdoors enthusiasts. Gennargentu National Park, the Supramonte plateau, Monte Arcosu and Asinara National Park are several places to go hiking in Sardinia.
Though not as well-known as other regions in Italy, the Sardinian food scene doesn’t disappoint. Wood-roasted young pig, pasta dumplings, Sardinian cheeses and wine are just a handful of the local delicacies you can try.
7. Ischia
The volcanic island of Ischia is the largest of three islands in the Gulf of Naples. Most famous for its hot springs and beaches, Ischia is one of several beautiful islands where Italians vacation.
Swim, relax and soak up the sun on some of Ischia’s beautiful beaches. Several to note include Spiaggia dei Maronti, Spiaggia dei Pescatori and Citara Beach.
Thermal springs like Negombo and Poseidon Gardens are places where you can relax in the thermal pools and mud baths.
Poseidon Gardens (Giardini Poseidon Terme), Via Giovanni Mazzella, 87

Other notable attractions on Ischia include Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese d’Ischia) and the Gardens of La Mortella.
The former’s a medieval castle located on a small rocky islet while the latter’s a plant paradise. Created by English composer William Walton and his wife, the gardens make one of the prettiest day trips in Ischia.
Other points of interest include exploring the narrow streets of Forio and visiting the historic Soccorso Church (Chiesa del Soccorso). The church has a panoramic terrace, from which you can catch a spectacular sunset.

8. Procida
Staying in the Gulf of Naples, we head to the colorful island of Procida. The fishing village of Marina Corricella beams with colorful houses, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants.
While Procida is less visited than its neighboring islands, it’s beginning to attract more visitors. Awarded Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2022 elevated Procida further into the limelight.
With their ideal location, the beaches on Procida are its number one attraction. Chiaiolella Beach and Spiaggia del Postino are 2 notable beaches, the latter of which featured in the film Il Postino.
Also, on Procida is the medieval fortress of St. Michael’s Abbey. Located on the highest point of the island on Terra Murata, learn about the history and enjoy the views.

9. Capri
No post about beautiful islands where Italians vacation would be complete without Capri. Located in the Bay of Naples, it’s obvious why people choose Capri as a travel destination.
Blessed with incredible natural beauty, Capri makes an ideal Italian island getaway. Its number one attraction is exploring the famous sea cave, the Blue Grotto, by boat.
On land, the Gardens of Augustus botanical gardens offer a dry alternative. From above, the gardens are a perfect spot to enjoy panoramic views, the Faraglioni rock formations and Marina Piccola.
Active visitors to the island will enjoy hiking Capri’s Path of the Forts (Sentiero dei Forti). The scenic hike travels along the coastline, rugged cliffs and historical fortifications. Path of the Forts connects the towns of Capri and Anacapri.
Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto), Via Matteotti, 2
10. Elba
The third-largest island in Italy, Elba has a pretty town center, plenty of beaches and a national park.
Elba is the only island on this list that's situated in central Italy.
Located off the coast of Tuscany in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Elba is home to several historical, and important, sites. They include the former residences of Napoleon Bonaparte who was exiled to Elba in 1814.
Palazzina Napoleonica dei Mulini and Villa San Martino are both open to the public.
Elba’s historic center, Portoferraio, is also worth a visit, as are the views from Stella Fort. To explore further on Elba, consider stopping by the small towns of Marciana, Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro.
Finally, Elba also has the Tuscan Archipelago National Park to explore within its vicinity. Embark on a hike to Monte Capanne, the highest peak on the island, to take in the best views.

11. Ponza
The volcanic island of Ponza in the Tyrrhenian Sea is ideal for travelers that enjoy traveling off the beaten track.
It’s the largest island in the Pontine Islands archipelago and offers visitors charming villages, rugged landscapes and beautiful beaches. Two of the most popular are Chiaia di Luna, Frontone and Cala Feola.
Ponza has been inhabited and ruled by various civilizations, including the Romans, the Byzantines and the Saracens.
One of the smaller beautiful islands where Italians vacation, come to Ponza to enjoy its nature for yourself.
12. Tremiti Islands
We head to Puglia for our last stop of the most beautiful islands where Italians vacation.
Located in the Adriatic Sea, the Tremiti Islands consist of San Nicola, San Domino, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa.
A boat trip from Bari, the Tremiti Islands are a protected marine reserve which are popular among scuba diving enthusiasts. The waters around the islands are rich in marine life plus there are several shipwrecks in the area to explore.
San Nicola
San Nicola is the largest and most populous of the group. It’s home to the main port and the principal town of the archipelago, also called Tremiti.
San Nicola attracts visitors not just for its beach and water activities but also for its historic attractions. The impressive San Nicola Fortress dates to the 10th century, offering visitors a chance to explore its walls and towers.
From here, many boast about the fabulous panoramic views of the surrounding Adriatic Sea. Another point of interest on San Nicola is the remarkable 11th century Romanesque-style Church of Santa Maria a Mare. Unmissable, the church is still in impressive condition considering how many years it’s been around.

While San Nicola has the attractions, San Domino Island is for beach lovers. The Island boasts several glorious sandy beaches, including Cala delle Arene, Cala Matano and Cala dello Spido.

Wow! So many gorgeous islands in Italy! Capri looks amazing lit up at night, and I'd love to visit the Aragonese Castle on Ischia island. Procida's fishing village would also be a great place to visit, explore, and take beautiful photos. I've been to Italy, but unfortunately not to any of its lovely islands. I guess that would be a great reason to return!
There are many here that many don't really know about! I hope you return to see more of them the next time 🙂
I had no idea that there are a lot of islands in Italy worth visiting. I am only familiar with Sicily and Sardegna. I think Stromboli is a great destination as I would love to experience hiking to the volcano's summit. I have also read a great review about the Ischia and it would be cool to see the castle up close.
You definitely must consider visiting Ischia and Stromboli; it's so perfect for hiking!
Ohh my...love each of these beautiful places/ beaches on your sharing here, thanks for sharing the beautiful scenery captured of each. I wish to visit each of it on this list one day soon.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you also visit one of these islands one day.
Many people, including myself, have their hearts set on visiting Italy. Because of these islands, I developed a greater interest in this nation. Although every single one of the 24 highlighted islands is breathtakingly lovely, my top three choices are the Egadi Islands, the Pelagie Islands, and Elba.
I hope you visit one day and see these islands for yourself.
Oh my gosh, the beautiful coastline and dramatic rocks and cliffs. With the beautiful architecture and houses, it seem like every angle is a wonderful photo taking spot. I am currently planning a visit in Italy this summer and you have given me some wonderful inspirations! I wonder if you have any good suggestion if I am starting my journey from Milan?
Hi there, you can check my Milan travel tips. I also include trip suggestions from here: https://www.followingtherivera.com/2022/10/20/insider-milan-travel-tips/
I would love to visit all of these places! I love it that you also mentioned food because that is a big part of our trips when we are in Italy. Everything there just tastes amazing! I didn't even realize that there are so many islands in Italy. Some of these I have never heard of. I loved learning about them.
I'm glad you enjoyed learning about these other islands here 🙂
I love Italy, and have been to Sicily, Capri and Ischia but had no idea the country has over 200 islands to its name! Sardinia has been on my wishlist for a long time, and you have encouraged me to bump it up the list. I think I'd also like to visit the volcano on Stromboli, try the Malvasia wine on Salina, and photograph the colourful buildings at Marina Corricella on Procida.
You have visited many places here! You must come back to see the other islands here you'll love it!
I had no idea that Italy had so many islands. I only know a few of them. Out of all of the places you've listed here, I only visited the eastern part of Sicily, which was amazing. I had such an amazing time exploring Catania, Taormina and its incredible beaches, and climbing up Etna. I have also seen Capri, from when I explored the Amalfi Coast, but I haven't visited it. I could see it from my hotel, near Sorrento, and it was magical at sunset.
There are many more than people realize but many don't know about them. The sunset there is truly beautiful 🙂
Sicily and Capri are famous but i can see thzt there are so many others to visit. Perhaps à cruise around the boot!
That is a great idea
These beautiful Italian islands are drool worthy with powdery beaches and turquoise waters lapping up the shores and charming villages with cafes, villas, shops and fortresses to explore. Tasting pasta dumplings and Sicilian cheese would a great way to explore the food while hiking the active volcano in Stromboli. A boat ride to capture the stunning night views of the Faraglioni rocks is not to be missed as much as the bird's eye view of the San Nicola fortress, Aragonese castle and the Stella fort. Relaxing in the thermal springs of Ischia islands and watching loggerhead seaturtles and monk seals from Pelagie islands would be a great way to spend vacation in these beautiful Italian islands.
I hope you visit one of them one day 🙂
Ischia is the only one of the islands I have visited, and it was truly beautiful. Italy is one of my favourite countries so I'd love to visit more of the islands, especially if locals love it x

We are headed this year to Sicily and hope to visit the Aeolian Islands too on this trip. I am looking forward to enjoying the beach but also exploring everything else there is to see and do. But I sure hope I won’t pack on the pounds with all the great food! Sardenia is high on our list of places to go as well. We just could not fit it into this trip. Great to learn more about some of the smaller Italian islands that Italians visit. Keeping this post for future planning for sure.
