I live in Italy, I write about traveling around Italy, but I’ve never written a ‘best things to do in Italy’ post. 

That changes right now.

Abruzzo  

The central region of Abruzzo is lesser visited but it has great places to add to your Italy bucket list. 

  • Explore the historic city of L'Aquila: The capital of the Abruzzo region, its main landmarks include the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio and the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle. While in town, you may also want to visit Abruzzo’s national museum (MuNDA Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo). 
  • Visit the National Park (Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga). The largest in Italy, it’s home to mountains, valleys and lakes. 
  • Explore the Stiffe Caves (Grotte di Stiffe). Not far from the national park are the Stiffe Caves. Here you can discover underground waterfalls, lakes, and streams. 
  • Head to the Adriatic Coast. Abruzzo has a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea, with beautiful beaches and seaside towns to visit like Vasto.  
  • Take a day trip to Sulmona. A medieval town in southern Abruzzo, its known for its historic architecture and for its production of confetti (sugar-coated almonds). 
  • Enjoy a glass or two of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Stop by a local vineyard to taste and learn more about the production process. 
  • Taste the local cuisine. Indulge in a few Abruzzese dishes like pasta alla chitarra (pasta made with a special guitar-like tool), and pecorino cheese.

Basilicata  

Home to Matera and incredible national parks, there’s much more to see in Basilicata than meets the eye. 

  • Spend 2 days in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera. One of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, visiting the Sassi di Matera is one of the best things to do in Italy. 
  • Explore the Pollino National Park (Parco Nazionale del Pollino). An area that spans Basilicata and Calabria, the park’s ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and rock climbing. 
  • Try the local food. Basilicata is known for its hearty and delicious cuisine. Some must-try dishes include peperoni cruschi (dried and fried red peppers) and lucanica (a type of sausage). 
  • Head to the small town of Metaponto. Visit its ancient ruins, which include Ancient Greek temples and a Roman amphitheater.  
  • Relax on the beach in Maratea. A pretty coastal town, Maratea is a beautiful spot to lap up the views of the Tyhrennian Sea. 
  • Stop by Melfi Castle (Castello di Melfi). Built by the Normans in the 11th century, the medieval fortress is worth a visit. 
  • Check out the National Archaeological Museum and park in Venosa (Museo Archeologico Nazionale "Mario Torelli", Parco Archeologico e Catacombe di Venosa).

Calabria  

Head to the southern region of the country for unspoiled nature and jaw-dropping scenery. 

  • Spend the day in Tropea. A charming coastal town known for its sandy beaches, it’s one of the best things to do in Italy. 
  • Explore the Aspromonte National Park (Parco Nazionale dell’Aspromonte). Covering over 2,000 sq kms of mountainous terrain, come here for hiking, rock climbing, or to enjoy the sprawling nature. 
  • Visit Reggio Calabria. The largest city in Calabria, Reggio Calabria has beaches, ancient ruins, and historic museums to explore. 
  • Take a trip to Pizzo. Grab a gelato and enjoy the far-reaching views of the sea from the charming town of Pizzo.

  • Explore the ancient city of Paestum. Located near Salerno, it’s home to some of the best-preserved ancient Greek ruins in Italy.

Emilia Romagna 

Prepare to eat well in one the best food regions in Italy, then walk it off after. This is Emilia Romagna.

Things to do in Lombardy outside of Milan  

  • Spend a few days in Lake Como. Book 2 or 3 days in Lake Como, explore the pretty towns and discover the best free things to do.
  • Take a day trip to Bergamo. Walk along the city walls, visit the Piazza Vecchia and enjoy the views of the Lombardy countryside. 
  • Check out towns, like Salò, on the Lombardy side of Lake Garda. Sirimione is one of the most visited and makes a great Milan day trip. Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol also share the well-loved lake. The beloved lake is one of the best things to do in Italy.
  • Visit Franciacorta wine country. Sample the local sparkling wine on a guided tour. 
  • Head to Mantua. Explore Mantua’s historic center and beautiful Renaissance architecture. Add Palazzo Ducale, the Basilica di Sant'Andrea, and Palazzo Te to your list. Mantua is also the birthplace of one of my favorite Italian desserts, sbrisolona.  
  • Go skiing in the Italian Alps. Head to some of the best ski resorts in the region such as Bormio, Livigno, and Aprica.

Marche  

The region to the west of Italy, Marche has renaissance architecture, striking mountain ranges and a famous opera festival. 

  • Visit Urbino. This Renaissance town is home to Palazzo Ducale, with an art collection featuring works by Raphael and Piero della Francesca. 
  • Head to Ancona. Walk around the capital city of Marche, discover its old town, beaches and see the Arch of Trajan. 
  • Attend the Rossini Opera Festival. The annual Rossini Opera Festival pays tribute to Gioachino Rossini, the composer born in Marche. It usually takes place every August in the town of Pesaro.

  • Visit Ascoli Piceno. Stroll through the town’s renaissance-era Piazza del Popolo, which features impressive palaces and a striking fountain.  
  • Explore the Frasassi Caves (Grotte di Frassissi). Book tickets to see caves that are among the largest in Europe. 
  • Walk along its beaches. Bring the kids to some of the most popular beaches like Senigallia, Numana, and Porto Recanati. 
  • Try some local dishes. Have a try of the local specialties in Marche like vincisgrassi, ciauscolo (salami) and a fish stew called brodetto.

Molise 

A small region bordering Abruzzo, Campania, Lazio and Puglia, visiting Molise is like visiting Italy from a bygone era. 

  • Explore Campobasso. The hilltop capital of Molise has a rich history and beautiful architecture. Notable attractions in Campobasso include Monforte Castle (Castello Monforte) and the Sannitico Museum (Museo Sannitico). 
  • Hike around the Matese Regional Park (Parco Regionale del Matese). A park bordering Molise and Campania, enjoy the best of both regions and lose yourself in the hiking trails and forests.

  • Visit the Basilica Minore dell’Addolorata. A church and walking trail located in the town of Castelpetroso, legend says it’s famous for its healing waters. 
  • Check out Molise’s beaches. For a small region, Molise has some great beaches to visit. They include Termoli, Petacciato, and Campomarino. 
  • Try some local Molise dishes. Cheeses such as pecorino and caciocavallo Molisano are popular products in the region. Maccheroni alla chitarra is a handmade pasta also used in many dishes here.

Piedmont 

Discover the first capital city of Italy, lakes, mountains and more in the picturesque region of Piedmont. 

Visit the former capital city of Turin. Turin, or Torino, is the capital of Piedmont. It’s known for its jaw-dropping architecture, grand streets and fascinating museums. Here are some of the best things to do in Turin.  

  • Book a guided tour of the Royal Palace of Turin (Palazzo Reale). 
  • See the exhibits inside the Egyptian Museum (Museo Egizio). It houses one of the most important collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world.

Best things to do in Piedmont outside Turin  

  • Take a tour of the Langhe wine region. Home to Barolo and Barbaresco wines, booking a wine tour makes for a great day trip. 
  • Travel around Lake Maggiore. Spend 2 days in Lake Maggiore and discover one of the most beautiful lakes in northern Italy. Hands down, it's one of the best things to do in Italy.
  • Spend a day in Orta San Giulio. Walk around the historic borgo of Orta San Giulio and take a boat to the island of the same name. 
  • Go truffle hunting in Alba. Head to the charming town of Alba to search for its infamous white truffles. There’s also the Alba Truffle Fair that happens from early October to early December. 
  • Go hiking in the Gran Paradiso National Park (Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso). The oldest national park in Italy, walk the hiking trails and head to the top of the Gran Paradiso Mountain.

Puglia 

Plenty of sun, sea, beaches and dreamy coastlines await in the visitor favorite region of Puglia. 

  • Discover the enchanting Alberobello. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Alberbello is home to hundreds of Trulli, which are traditional conical houses made of limestone. Booking a tour in Alberobello is the perfect way to learn more about them. One of the best things to do in Italy, Alberobello is one town you don't want to miss.
  • Head to Lecce. Known as the ‘Florence of the South’, Lecce has plenty of beautiful baroque architecture. Notable landmarks include the Basilica di Santa Croce and the Piazza del Duomo.

Sardinia 

Explore the second largest island in the Mediterranean and discover an abundance of natural beauty. With some of the best things to do in Italy, Sardinia is a must see.

  • Find out more about nuraghe. Track down ancient stone structures that are unique to Sardinia. Built by the Nuragic civilization thousands of years ago, they’re scattered across the island. Some of the most impressive nuraghe sites include Su Nuraxi, Barumini, and Santu Antine. For me, seeing the nuraghe are one of the most unique things to do in Italy.  
  • Stop by Alghero. A town on the northwest coast known for its Catalan heritage, explore Alghero’s historic center and walk its city walls. 
  • Hike around the Gennargentu National Park. Get some of the best views in Sardinia by hiking, biking, or horseback riding through this scenic mountain range. 
  • Eat Sardo. Chow down on some of the most popular Sardinian dishes. They include porceddu (roast pig), culurgiones (stuffed dumplings), and seadas (deep-fried cheese pastry)

Sicily

  4. This is a comprehensive list of best things to do in Italy. Italy has so much to explore. From ancient ruins, amphitheatre, piazzas, fountains, basilicas to far side beaches, islands, vineyards and medieval architecture at its best. The Colosseum, leaning tower of Pisa, Amalfi coast and a gondola ride in Venice is high on my list. Also taking a cooking class in Tuscany and exploring the Christmas markets of Bolzano would be a great idea.

I love the variety of things to see and do in each area. And so many great spots for both food and wine tours. I am keeping this post for planning our next visit. My last trip to Italy was just a few months ago, when I visited Venice in winter.     1. Hi Angela, it's a very difficult question! I love seeing the old Italy, like the campagna and the small lesser known towns. But, I also love seeing the cities and the modernity that is happening here. It really comes down to personal choice 🙂
