When is the best time to visit Lake Garda?
Last updated on September 4th, 2026.
When is the best time to visit Lake Garda is a question that comes up again and again.
Italy’s largest lake is one of the country’s most visited, and most beautiful, attractions. With its striking scenery and pretty lakeside towns, it’s only natural people want to time their visit well.
But despite what a lot of existing guides suggest, there's no single straightforward answer.
In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about when to visit Lake Garda, including the weather by month, what to wear, and what to do when it rains.
This resource will help you plan your Italy trip and decide which month or season is right for you.
Why visit Lake Garda?
Lake Garda is an all-in-one destination. It has history, a wide range of activities and a lake so big it's hard to get bored.
As someone who lives close by, I never miss an opportunity to visit. I’ve been to dozens of towns around the lake, and they really do differ from one another.
Lake Garda is also easily accessible by car, train and bus, making it an attractive — and easy — option as a day trip option, especially from Verona.

Where is Lake Garda?
Lake Garda sits between the Alps and the Po Valley in northern Italy, shared between three regions: Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino Alto-Adige/Südtirol.
Because of this, there are several different routes for how to get to Lake Garda, depending on where you're coming from.
While hiring a car is the most convenient way to visit, taking a train or bus is also possible. It's one of the best day trips from Verona, with several lake towns easily reachable by train.
Lake Garda: north vs. south
Lake Garda isn't uniform. Where you base yourself can noticeably change your experience, especially in summer.
The north (Riva del Garda, Nago-Torbole, Arco)
The north is cooler and fresher than the south.
In Riva and Nago-Torbole, it's noticeably windier, the reason windsurfing is so popular there. Even in summer, a steady breeze keeps humidity down.
We visited in late August, and the difference was noticeable: we barely sweated in the north, compared to how much we did further south.
The north also has a distinct character.
Being in Trentino, small towns like Arco have alpine-style architecture, and you'll spot signs in German for Austrian and German visitors, like frisches Brot (fresh bread), along with Italian.
When there, it feels closer to the Dolomites than to a typical Italian lake town.
Lake Tenno, a short drive from Riva, is a good example. The temperature there was ideal even in late August.
We didn't swim (we'd forgotten water shoes, worth packing if you plan to), but had a lovely picnic in a shaded spot overlooking the lake.
The south (Garda, Lazise, Bardolino)
Further south, conditions shift noticeably. When we visited Garda in late August, it was sweltering, hotter and considerably more humid than the north.
Lazise and Bardolino are beautiful towns, but exposed, unshaded areas can get uncomfortably hot in peak summer.
What this means for planning
If you're visiting in peak summer and heat-sensitive, the north offers a cooler, breezier alternative without leaving the lake.
If you want classic lakeside beach towns and don't mind the heat, the south delivers that in full.
Map: Lake Garda north vs. south & rainy-day spots
Here's a map of everything covered in this guide.
The cooler, breezier towns up north, the warmer south, and a few solid rainy-day options scattered around the lake.
What is the best time to visit Lake Garda?
The months of May, June, September and early October are often considered the sweet spots.
Why?
These months combine pleasant temperatures (63°F to 77°F/17°C to 25°C) with fewer crowds and moderate rainfall.
They're ideal conditions for exploring towns like Sirmione, Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda.
Which month/s as a local do I prefer?
Personally, I love visiting in early or late spring (end of March to June). It’s not too hot, not too cold, and the peak summer crowds are yet nowhere in sight.

Lake Garda weather by season
Spring in Lake Garda (March to May)
Spring is my favorite time to visit Lake Garda.
Temperatures are warming up, gardens are blooming and towns aren’t yet overly busy.
While there are many sunny days, rainfall is also common, especially in April. It’s historically one of the wetter months on the lake.

Summer in Lake Garda (June to August)
Summer is Lake Garda’s peak season with July and August the hottest months.
The lake itself reaches swimming-friendly temperatures of around 68°F to 75°F (20°C to 24°C). Beaches get busy and days are long, hot and very sticky.
If opera is on your list, the Arena di Verona Opera Festival runs from June through September just outside the lake.
2027’s season runs June 11 to September 11, an easy add-on for anyone staying on the Veneto side.
Autumn in Lake Garda (September to November)
Autumn is a peaceful time for travelers after mild temperatures and fewer crowds. September stays warm, but rain increases from late October.
Early October also brings the Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival (October 1 to 5 in 2026).
It’s one of the region's biggest annual events, with wine tastings, food stalls and a lakeside fireworks display in Bardolino's historic center.
Winter in Lake Garda (December to February)
Winter on Lake Garda is a colder, quieter experience.
Sunny days do make an appearance, but much of the season is cold, grey and foggy.
Late November through early January brings Christmas markets to several lake towns, including Garda, Lazise, and Riva del Garda.
They’re a good reason to visit despite the chill, if festive atmosphere appeals more than sunshine.
Event dates can shift slightly from year to year, so it's worth double-checking closer to your trip. See Bardolino's official tourism site for the latest on the Wine Festival, and Verona's official tourism site for confirmed Opera Festival dates.

What to do in Lake Garda if it rains?
Heavy rain can put a damper on any trip but it doesn't have to ruin it.
Here's a solid plan B for a rainy day around Lake Garda.
Visit museums and castles
- Take shelter while enjoying the views inside Scaliger Castle (Castello di Scaligero) in Sirmione. A fairy-tale fortress rising with towers and walkways offering panoramic views.
- MAG – Museo Alto Garda (Riva del Garda). Browse exhibits covering archaeology and art inside this modern museum housed in a fortress.

Book a wine tasting
Sample the local wine and learn about the process on a tasting tour:
- Wine tour and tasting experience in Bardolino (1.5 hours)
Take shelter in a spa
Let it rain outside while you relax, Lake Garda style.
- SPA & Thermal Garden (Terme di Sirmione) in Sirmione: lakefront thermal pools and saunas, or book a treatment.
- Villa dei Cedri Spa in Lazise: an 18th-century villa turned hotel and spa, well suited to a rainy day
- Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda in Gargnano, for something a little more luxurious. A 5-star hotel with a spa featuring a pool, sauna and treatment rooms above the western shore.
Discover historic churches
Free to enter and packed with history, Lake Garda's churches are always worth a visit, rain or shine:
- Chiesa di San Zeno in Bardolino. A Romanesque church, its simplicity offset by striking historic frescoes.
- Salò Cathedral (Duomo di Santa Maria Annunziata). Renaissance artwork and a peaceful interior
Join a cooking class
Wait out the rain while learning to cook a few local dishes:
- Garda cooking class with dessert (3 hours)
- Lake Garda pasta cooking class at an agriturismo in Bardolino (3.5 hours)
Go shopping
When heavy, torrential rain caught us out one late August afternoon, we headed to Blue Garden (centro commerciale) shopping mall in Riva del Garda.
It's a straightforward solution: dry indoors, with plenty of shops and restaurants to pass the time.
The catch: we weren't the only ones with that idea. Traffic backed up considerably on the approach, and the parking lot filled up fast.
If you're planning to shop on a rainy day around Lake Garda, go early to beat the crowds.
