Best free film locations in the UK
Poldark
I’m amazed by how many questions I receive from readers about the period TV drama Poldark.
The series set in the 18th century is based on the novels from author Winston Graham. It revolves around Ross Poldark, a British army officer, who has returned to his home in Cornwall.
Bursting with romance, drama and chivalry, Poldark was a hit worldwide. However, as popular as the show — and its main front runner — is, the locations are also worthy of a mention.
Where is Poldark filmed?
Cornwall in the south-west of England takes center stage for most of the filming locations in Poldark. It follows the setting of the books, featuring the rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and hidden coves of the area.
The following places are some of the locations where they filmed Poldark. See how many of these you recognize from the show.
Porthcothan Beach
Cornwall is known for its magnificent sandy beaches and wide-open bays.
Near the town of Newquay is Porthcothan beach, a location that features frequently in Poldark. It was used as Nampara Cove, the land of the Poldark estate.
Enjoy walking on find soft white sand, viewing high cliffs and seeing one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall.
Bodmin Moor
Speaking of the Poldark home, the family cottage in the show is set on Bodmin Moor.
The wild and rugged landscape is also the setting for many horseback scenes. True fans of the show will also recognize Bodmin Moor as the place where Ross meets his future love interest Demelza.
Botallack and Levant
Botallack and Levant are not just filming locations in Poldark; they’re also 2 important sites of interest in Cornwall. Both portray the area’s rich mining heritage — something which features often in the Poldark story.
Botallack is the setting of Poldark’s Wheal Leisure mines, while Levant Mine acts as the fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill.
At Botallack, the old engine houses sit on the cliff tops overlooking the dramatic Tin Coast. It’s also the scene of several clifftop encounters in Poldark.
Botallack and Levant are part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and are both managed by The National Trust.
What else is there to do at Botallack and Levant?
Other activities to do at Botallack include exploring the mines and visiting Botallack Count House Workshop. It was once a stable, workshop and classroom for Penzance School of Mines. Today, it’s a place where you can find out about Cornish mining over a slice of cake and tea.
From Levant, choose from one of several coastal walks. Explore the glorious stretch of land — and splendid scenery — along the Tin Coast.
St Agnes Head
The last UK filming location on the Poldark tour is St Agnes Head. A location with engine houses on the cliff’s edge, it features as Nampara Valley in the show. St Agnes Head is also where many horse-riding scenes were filmed.
Where to stay in Cornwall
Talland Bay Hotel, Talland
Talland Bay Hotel is one of those hotels that immediately grab your attention. The hotel has two award-winning restaurants on site plus sea views to admire from your room.
Rooms are individually styled — as you’d expect from a boutique hotel, and the coastal path is minutes away. Check availability for your upcoming stay.
Boskerris Hotel, St Ives
Check into the fabulous Boskerris Hotel in St Ives, Cornwall, with modern styled rooms and fantastic views. It’s 70m from Carbis Bay and a great setting for your Poldark tour trip.

Downton Abbey
No-one does period drama better than the British, as shown by the hugely successful TV series Downton Abbey. The story revolves around the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family.
Set between 1912 and 1926, it follows the lives of the family upstairs, and their servants downstairs, on their Yorkshire estate.
Where is the castle in Downton Abbey?
The real-life stately home featured in Downton Abbey is Highclere Castle near the town of Newbury. It’s easy to reach from London and also makes an ideal day trip to see nearby Newbury Racecourse.
Tour the lavish state rooms, the gardens and woodlands. Explore the gorgeous Secret Garden with its curving green borders and wander the Wood of Goodwill, home to 38 native British trees.
How can I reach Highclere Castle?
The quickest way to visit Highclere Castle is by car. They advise visitors not to use their GPS when near the castle as it will lead to the wrong entrance. Instead, enter the postcode, RG20 9LE, and follow the brown tourist signs to the main entrance.
Another way to reach Highclere Castle from London is by train. Trains run on the hour from London Paddington station to Newbury. From the station, it’s about a 14-minute taxi ride to reach the castle.
The last way to visit Highclere Castle is by joining a Downton Abbey tour. From London, there are several options, like this Downton Abbey and village coach tour that includes transport to and from the venue.
Where is the village in Downton Abbey?
The real-life location of the village featured in Downton Abbey is called Bampton. It’s located in the green, leafy region of England called The Cotswolds and is the classic chocolate-box English village.
Bampton is the location of many scenes including:
- Branson teaching Lady Edith to drive, and
- Lord Grantham, Lady Mary and Tom walking across Shill Brook.
St. Mary’s Church in Bampton dates to the 12th century and features as the entrance to the cottage hospital. It’s one of the oldest towns in England and lies in the county of Oxfordshire.
Where to stay in Newbury, UK
Treat yourself to a 5-star spa hotel experience at The Vineyard. With beautifully styled bedrooms, it’s an ideal location to reach Highclere Castle 8mi (12.9km) and Newbury Racecourse 5mi (8km).
Doctor Who
The British BBC TV show, Doctor Who, gained a legion of devoted fans since it first began in 1963.
It follows the adventures of a time lord, who travels the universe in a time-traveling spaceship called the TARDIS. He typically has a trusty sidekick who helps him in his battle against the Daleks and cybermen.
Filming locations of Doctor Who have usually been in the UK, but some seasons, like season 12 was filmed in South Africa.
Doctor Who filming locations in London
Doctor Who has been filmed against the backdrop of many London top attractions. Cybermen have marched down the steps from St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Doctor met Shakespeare himself inside the Globe Theatre.
Avid fans of the show may be interested to take a Doctor Who London walking tour. It’s a chance to follow in the footsteps of the much-loved protagonist and with like-minded people that love the show.
Doctor Who filming locations in Wales
Much of the later series of the show were filmed in the studios in Cardiff, Wales.
However, the outdoor locations are open to the public and are some of the best free film locations in the UK.
2 Welsh castles in Doctor Who
Doctor Who in Wales features two castles in and near to Cardiff.
Cardiff Castle is located in the capital's city center meaning there’s no excuse not to visit. The castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders and is dripping in history.
Cardiff Castle has been the backdrop for several Doctor Who episodes, as well as the spin-off show, Torchwood.
Caerphilly is a short drive (29 minutes) from Cardiff and is home to Caerphilly Castle.
The largest castle in Wales was built by the English in the 13th century, with massive walls, towers and gateways. It has its own leaning tower similar to the one in Pisa, Italy and has been featured many times in Doctor Who.
To see Caerphilly Castle (and other sites) up close, consider joining a castles and mountains tour from Cardiff.
The secret alleyway in Doctor Who
Transport yourself back to series 9 where viewers are introduced to the mysterious Diagon Alley. The Doctor and his sidekick come across the hidden entrance to the secret alleyway.
As it turns out, it’s not so secret, as you can find this along Westgate Street in Cardiff. Take caution however, as you never know where it may lead....
Southerndown Beach in Doctor Who
Die-hard Doctor Who fans will instantly recognize this beach from one of the most popular episodes of the series.
A beautiful backdrop for a tearjerker ending, Southerndown Beach is where the Doctor bids farewell to his traveling companion Rose.
There are several ways to visit the beach for yourself. From Cardiff, the journey takes around 46 minutes, while by train it's 27 minutes from Cardiff Central to Bridgend. Afterwards, it’s a short taxi ride (9 minutes) to get to the beach.
The third option is by bus. Look for the X2 bus and get off at the stop called Corntown, The Paddocks. From here, you’ll also need to get a taxi.
Where to stay in Cardiff, Wales
Extend your Doctor Who tour by spending a night or two in one of these sublime boutique hotels.
Jolyon’s Boutique Hotel
Boutique by name — and by nature, Jolyon’s Boutique Hotel is a striking townhouse in the docklands area of Cardiff.
Booking into this hotel also gives you a chance to stay in the same place as Doctor Who himself. Actor Chris Eccleston played the ninth doctor in the show and stayed at the hotel saying, ‘it’s much better than the tardis!’
Hotel Indigo
Just 300m from Cardiff Castle is Hotel Indigo Cardiff. With charming and colorful rooms, Indigo Hotel is not only a comfortable choice but it’s also centrally located too.
The hotel has a terrace, fitness center and more on site. Other nearby attractions include the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff and Principality Stadium.
Harry Potter
No post about the best free film locations in the UK to visit would be complete without Harry Potter. The story of the lovable boy (and later teenage) wizard and his friends captured a large fan base worldwide.
Alnwick Castle, Alnwick
Fans of the movies may recognize Alnwick Castle from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets. The castle was used as the exterior of Hogwarts — the school of magic in the movie.
The castle is in the town of Alnwick in the county of Northumberland, north-east England. Unlike many uninhabited castles around the UK, the dukes of Northumberland live at Alnwick Castle.
While it’s probably easier to drive, there are also buses that can take you there.
If traveling from London, you can take the train from London to Edinburgh and get off at Alnmouth. From here, take a taxi or a bus to Alnwick Castle.
Tickets are required to visit Alnwick castle, the garden, and the castle and garden. However, you can choose to explore the exterior and keep the experience totally free.
Malham Cove — Harry Potter UK filming locations
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Harry and Hermione hide from Voldemort behind a unique rock formation.
This limestone rock camp is Malham Cove and it's located near the village of Malham. The unique shape was made by the river that once ran over it.
Gargrave is the nearest train station to Malham Cove and it’s about 7mi (11.3km). If arriving by car, prepare for the narrow country lanes from Gargrave to Malham. While exploring Malham Cove is free, the same can’t be said for the parking.
Harry Potter film locations — Ashridge Wood
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ashridge Wood is where the Quidditch World Cup takes place.
The woods are ideal for Harry Potter fans as well as for nature lovers. It’s a colorful setting for a fall or spring walk and makes for a great family day trip. The visitor center is open from 10am to 4pm.*
The journey from London to Ashridge Wood takes around 1hr 40 minutes. By train from London Paddington station, it's slightly longer at around 3hrs 50mins. This is because the journey includes a train and several bus rides.
Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland
Glenfinnan
Several of the Harry Potter movies were filmed in Scotland.
One of the most striking landmarks is the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Fans of the franchise will recognize the Glenfinnan Viaduct as the bridge upon which the Hogwarts Express makes its journey.
It features in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire.
Daily train services run between Fort William and Glenfinnan, which takes passengers across the famous viaduct.
Recreate this magical train ride on this 2-day Highlands tour on the Hogwarts Express.
Loch Etive — where did they film Harry Potter in Scotland?
The incredible Loch Etive features in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. It’s located in Argyll and Bute, which is towards the west coast of Scotland. The location is where Harry, Hermione and Ron have their camping trip.
Taynuilt is the closest town to Loch Etive. It’s about 87mi (140km) north of Glasgow, but worth visiting if you love the movies and the outdoors too.
By train, take the route from Glasgow Queen Street station and get off at Taynuilt. The ride takes approximately 2hrs 46 minutes.
Where to stay in Glenfinnan
Extend your break in the inspiring Scottish Highlands by staying at one of these cozy yet chic accommodation choices.
The Armoury, Glenfinnan
Book a night, or 2, at a traditional Scottish villa-style home with lake and mountain views. The Armoury has all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay and is just 200m from the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
Camas Tana
How does a Scottish style lodge with lake views and a roaring fire sound? Camas Tana is a unique property that lets you connect with nature and is just a few steps from Glenfinnan Station Museum.
Harry Potter London film locations
The UK capital features across all the Harry Potter movies and they’re also all free to visit.
King's Cross Station is probably the most visited of all the film sites in London. It’s where you’ll find the famous platform 9 ¾: the stop for the Hogwarts Express.
The 'hidden' access to platform 9 ¾ is by the luggage cart sticking out of the wall. Take photos as a memento of your visit by posing with the luggage cart and a Gryffindor scarf.
Complete your London Harry Potter experience by booking a Harry Potter Warner Bros studio tour. Transport is included in the ticket price and it's a memorable day out for fans and families.
St Pancras Renaissance Hotel
Along with its fabulous luxury spa, the 5-star St Pancras Renaissance Hotel is also known for its grand exterior.
The hotel features as the entrance to King's Cross station in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.
Millennium Bridge – Harry Potter London filming locations
Cast your mind back to the opening of Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince and the collapse of the Millennium Bridge.
Today, the bridge very much exists and connects Bankside to the City of London. It was once known as the ‘wobbly bridge' because it moved as pedestrians crossed it on first opening.
Millennium Bridge was closed soon after for 2 years to correct structural issues and re-opened to the public in 2002. The closest tube station to see Millennium Bridge is Blackfriars.
Free film locations in London
It’d be criminal to leave off some much-loved British films that were filmed in London. I’m guilty of having watched the following movies several times and have visited all the places in the capital.
How many of these have you seen?
Bridget Jones Diary
I’ve watched all films in the franchise of the hapless yet lovable protagonist Bridget Jones. While chick flicks aren’t usually my thing, I’ve read the books, watched the movies and laughed throughout.
There are several places you can visit in London (for free) that feature in the film series.
8 Bedale Street — where does Bridget Jones live?
Bridget Jones' 'home' is located above a pub called The Globe Tavern. It’s very close to London Bridge tube station and is also right by Borough Market.
The door that’s her home in the movie is a real door — and most likely someone’s home. Take a photo, pose, but don’t go knocking on it.
Bridget Jones fight scene
The hilarious fight scene between Mark and Daniel takes place outside a Greek restaurant near Bridget’s home. In real life, the restaurant is a wine shop called Bedales, named after its location.
When Bridget does a TV interview
Outside the Royal Courts of Justice, Bridget conducts an interview for a landmark legal case. The nearest tube station to the courthouse is Chancery Lane, which is on the Central (red) line.
The last scene
We all love a happy ending, and in the first movie Bridget makes hers in her underwear. When she finally chases down Mark, they share their romantic exchange and kiss at the Royal Exchange in Cornhill. It’s easy to find as it’s near the grand Bank of England right by Bank tube station.
James Bond
When you’re in the mood for a good spy film, you can't go wrong with James Bond.
And although the English spy travels frequently to fight off the bad guys, he always returns to his London base.
Because of this, the capital often features in the Bond franchise. However, rather than list every London location in the James Bond catalogue, here are some landmarks that frequently appear.
MI6 building
The headquarters of the British intelligence is a regular in many of the films. From Dr. No and From Russia with Love, to Skyfall and Casino Royale, it's impossible to miss this iconic building.
In real life, the MI6 building is located in Vauxhall, immediately south of the River Thames. The nearest tube station is Vauxhall, which is on the Victoria (light blue) line. A word of caution: be careful about how many photos you take of MI6; someone may just be watching you.
Houses of Parliament — James Bond film locations
In Skyfall, the iconic Houses of Parliament feature in the smash movie. Big Ben and the house is free to visit (from the outside).
Westminster is the nearest tube station and sits on the Circle (yellow), District (green) and Jubilee lines.
National Gallery
One of my favorite, and free, places to visit in London, also features in James Bond. During a scene in Skyfall, Bond meets up with Q in one of the rooms in the gallery.
When visiting London, don't miss out on seeing the National Gallery. It’s one of many free museums to visit in London and an incredible building to explore. The National Gallery is near another great landmark, Trafalgar Square, and is close to Charing Cross tube and train station.
Best boutique hotels in London
London is overflowing with boutique hotels. While it'd take up a whole other article to list them all, the following are some of my personal favorites.
Flemings Mayfair
Flemings Mayfair is a chic and central luxury boutique hotel in an upmarket area of London. The neighborhood’s close to Hyde Park and is about 7 minutes’ walk to Piccadilly Circus.
No two rooms are the same at Flemings Mayfair and the sizes are also generous for central London. There’s an excellent restaurant and cocktail bar on site plus the chance to have a traditional afternoon tea.
The closest tube station is Green Park, which is on the Piccadilly (dark blue) and Victoria (light blue) lines.
Dean Street Townhouse
Hip, uniquely styled and in the heart of the action is how I’d describe Dean Street Townhouse. Part of the SoHo House group, non-members are more than welcome to book at this SoHo-based boutique. A standing bathtub is the star attraction in the room, adding an elegant and almost retro feel to the look.
As the name suggests, Dean Street Townhouse is in Dean Street, which is in the SoHo area of London. While it’s a hotspot for nightlife outside, especially on the weekend, inside, you won’t hear a thing.

A great post if you are a U.K. production buff and would like to visit some of those amazing locations that these were filmed in. Living in london I have visited some of these and always love to find out about more and this post does help me. My favourite are the bond movie locations and I always remember Bond driving past the Mi 6 buildings always. Harry Potter studio seems to be a great one to if you are a fan of the series like myself. Thanks for sharing the top U.K. locations from movies and serials
You're welcome! The Bond locations are good fun to visit
Wow so many locations of some of my favorite films. I thought some of the castles are just set and never existed mostly just Harry Potter ones. Would now plan for these places when I plan for UK. It is great you tipped us that not to use GPS for Highclere castle as it takes to wrong entrance.
You're so welcome! Yes, many people make the same mistake and then end up at the wrong place!
What a crazy coincidence! I was watching episode 6 of the new season of Poldark as I stumbled upon this article. Ever since I started watching the show I've been curious about filming locations, especially those beautiful landscapes that I just can't get enough of. This post oucldnt have come at a better time!
It really couldn't! As a fan of the show, I hope you get to visit some of these locations 😀
I've never even heard of Poldark! But, they've used some good locations so maybe I should check it out. It's always interesting seeing film locations in the flesh to see how much poetic licence they took with the destination. I would love to see Glenfinnan Viaduct it looks so incredible.
Lol I get so many questions about it, it's a big hit 😀 The viaduct is really incredible
Does the King's Cross Station still operate the Hogwarts Express? I'd like to take it and check out the sceneries over Glenfinnan Viaduct. They look really magical... The MI6 building seems thrilling too... It looks futuristic and high tech. They may really have those Bond's gadget...
Yes it does! And it's fun and nostalgic for all HP fans! 😀
So unfortunately I am not in the know of British shows, well except for Harry Porter! However filming locations are wonderfully scenic and I am glad I read this list. I love visiting these places - The Globe Theatre and Caerphilly Castle are now on my list. As is the Glenfinnan Viaduct. So cool!
The viaduct in Glenfinnan is a must see for Harry Potter fans! I hope you get to see them when you visit 😀
Now that's an awesome awesome listing! I'm a sucker for hunting movie locations so much!
Too bad I missed Highclere Castle in Newbury when I was there. I should plan a trip again.
The Global Theatre looks so fascinating. I wouldn't have guessed its in London. There is a 'Doctor Who London Walking Tour'??? Whoa! I know the Sherlock Holmes tour. This is news to me!
My husband once watched the shooting of one of the Jason Bourne movies in Paddinton!
That must have been cool to watch! The Globe Theatre is a big hit in London; make a note to visit both this and Highclere Castle on your next visit 😀
Thanks for sharing these locations. My favourites are Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter. Now, I have an excuse to return to visit the UK and to visit these sites. Maybe I should start reading the Poldark series and check those sites out as well.
You've no idea how many people ask me about Poldark! It's such a hit show and the locations are stunning too
Love, love, love this article Lisa! I'm a huge fan of Downton Abbey and I now have Bampton down as one of the places to see in one of my next travels to the UK 🙂
That's great to read Val! I hope you get to visit the next time you're back!
This makes for fascinating reading. All the places are iconic and apart from films and television shows have also featured in books. It must indeed be a thrill to visit them and relive moments from fiction. Highclere Castle looks so enchanting. My favourite locations are the James Bond locations including the MI5 building.
There are great locations sights to see and mainly for free too!
OMG I totally love Poldark and would love to visit all these places which you have shared. I also did not know that they were free for us to go visit
Lol what are you waiting for! They're free and great for the whole family to see too 😀
Such a fun idea! I've never visited filming locations before but it's a great idea and even better that you can tour these ares for free!
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope you get to visit some one day
The pictures are absolutely awesome. It is pretty obvious that they are best film locations.
Thanks so much!
It's so easy to forget that we have some great locations in the UK that people who love certain shows will want to see. We have visited Cardiff for the Dr Who / Torchwood filming locations, but not much of the rest, although we have been to Cornwall many times, and love it. I haven't thought about visiting the Harry Potter ones but must go to those near me!
You must! They're free to visit and so easy for Londonders to see
Such a great list! I would imagine that lots of Harry Potter fans are incredibly thankful for your post! On my first visit to London I visited a Harry Potter filming location but I can't remember where it was (this was even way before all the movies were done)! I love the Doctor Who locations you've included and Bridget Jones too! It's one of my favorite movies and I would love to visit the Royal Exchange in Cornhill in the winter, just like the last scene!
In real life it's not that special, but when you think about Bridget Jones, it's perfect! I'm so glad to read you enjoyed the list
I love that show Broadchurch, I think that's what it was called. The Harry Potter locations are popular I'm sure.
That's a great suggestion! I may add it to the update 🙂
That's an uncredible list! The harry potter train brudge and the castle would certainly top my list. But everything here looks fascinating. Thansk for all the intricate details, like the not to use GPS near Highclere Castle. These are very handy.
You're welcome! I hope it's useful for you when you visit 🙂
I love Harry Potter. I can imagine how cool it would be to visit these places and film. I'll save this list for when I travel to the UK.
Perfect Sue! Plus they're all free to visit too 😀
This is such an awesome overview of so many beautiful filming locations. Thank you so much for collecting all these details - like how to really find the Downton Abbey mansion. It would be so incredible to see these locations in person. Great way to plan a trip through the UK! Pinning it for future plans...
xx Luci
You're welcome! I hope you get to visit the Downton castle when you visit!
I have a strange obsession with British shows! It's my dream to go there one day and visit all of the most used spots.
Lol then you really must come and visit one day!!
Totally blown away. I love this and I love that we can visit these places for free. I am such a fan of many of these films!!! so exciting!
You're welcome Melissa! I'm so happy to read you enjoy these programs and films
It's so cool that most of these places are for free. I would like to visit all of them someday, especially Alnwick Castle (big Harry Potter fan here). I'll definitely try to cover some of them during my upcoming trip to the UK.
You really must! It's actually very budget friendly too 🙂
This post answered a lingering question of mine, where can I find the castle in the Harry Potter films? I’m excited to finally know and be able to add Alnwick Castle to my bucket list. Before, I’d only ever looked at New Zealand for the location where Lord of the Rings. Now I have an extra spot or two (Bridget Jones Diary, anyone?!) to look forward to visiting!
Brilliant! I'm so happy to know I helped your search in Harry Potter! It's a stunning castle, and incredible that the dukes actually live here too 😀
I was in UK two years ago and visited some of the Harry Potter film location, one of them is Gloucester Cathedral but too bad it was on renovation so I was not able to go in but only see the Cathedral from the outside.
That's a s shame! I hope you get to visit the other locations I listed the next time you visit x
I am not aware of these TV shows but I can relate how exciting it is to get to film and shoot locations. More when your heroes have played a role there. The Botallack mine in Poldark scene is so dream like. Great pics.
You've no idea how many questions I get asked about Poldark! So, I thought it was about time I wrote about the places, and other shows and movies too!
What a great piece. I love that now I have a cheat sheet for when I go to the UK and I love that I got enough of a feel for these places to feel like I went along already
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Use the map when you do visit, it'll make things much easier to find 😀
I want to visit so many of these places! I love Harry Potter so seeing the Alnwick Castle and taking the train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct would be amazing. I'd also love to see the Downton Abbey castle. The filming locations from Pride & Prejudice are also on my list of beautiful houses in England you can tour. I don't watch Poldark or Doctor Who but Porthcothan Beach in Cornwall and the Southerndown Beach in Wales are both very impressive!
Southerndown Beach is stunning, though a little way to get to. The filming locations in Cornwall too are incredible. I hope you get to visit Alnwick Castle one day!!
