NYC best boutique hotels in the Tribeca area of New York City get no better than the Greenwich Hotel NYC.

Its style blends old European with Japanese decor, and the result's as unique as its rooms.

The entrance to the hotel's simple, without any grandeur, and typical of the non-descriptiveness you find in Tribeca. Inside, however, is a completely different story.

The lobby is oriental in feel, with its grid ceiling panels, square lanterns, luxurious rugs and folding screen.

The furniture draws on more European influences. Plush armchairs and sofas in bold colors of emerald green, stripey blues and tan leather fill the space perfectly.

Sprawling plants and flowers add the minute detail of a home-like feeling. All in all, the first impression's a good one.

The Tribeca area

For readers unfamiliar with New York City, Tribeca is a neighborhood in the downtown area. It also happens to be my favorite hangout when I’m back in town.

Independent boutiques, great bars, restaurants and intimate coffee shops — it’s a glance of local life at its finest. Tribeca is also the place where many celebrities live in New York City.

That said, don’t be surprised if you spot a famous face at the local coffee bar. It’s actually a fitting location, as one of the co-owners is the American actor Robert De Niro.

The rooms

Deluxe King Room

There are 88 rooms and suites in total, which like most boutique hotels, no two rooms are alike. Take the Deluxe King Room.

Room sizes in this category start from 300sqr ft, which is a generous size for a hotel room in New York. Enjoy a perfect night’s sleep in a king-size bed and freshen up in the walk-in rain shower.

If possible, book a room overlooking the courtyard. It's especially pretty come New York in the fall.

A quarter of the rooms are courtyard facing, and it’s a tranquil way to wake up in the big city.

1-bedroom corner suite

The 1-bedroom corner suite is the room to book if you’re looking for an extra slice of indulgence. Our suite was street facing, so we walked into a room with plenty of natural light.

All the furnishings, not just in this suite, are residential, and they constantly update the pieces.

The extras

What is consistent in every room are the amenities: complimentary refreshments, minibar and WiFi. My favorite feature of the 1-bedroom corner suite has to be the sauna.

This luxury boutique hotel has several suites, with its very own sauna.

Decked out in lavish Italian Carrara marble, the bathroom in this suite is a dream come true. There’s an extra deep soak tub in a marble–enclosed alcove, as well as the walk-in rain shower.

The toiletries are just as bespoke as the furnishings. US-based company, Red Flower Ocean, exclusively provide all the hotel’s toiletries, which are guaranteed to make bath-times a luxury affair.

The drawing room and courtyard

It’s hard to find anything negative about the hotel’s drawing room and open-air courtyard. It's somewhat of a treasure in New York.

These places are strictly for members, and no photos are allowed — hence me having none to show you.

Along with being a place to relax, guests can dine in both areas. I recommend taking breakfast or coffee in the courtyard, it’s a quiet and green way to start the day.

The striking elegance of the lobby extends to the drawing room, with a fireplace adding an extra homely feel.

Locanda Verde restaurant

Open to the public, Locanda Verde is the hotel’s restaurant, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

An Italian casual dining tavern, hotel guests always have 2 spaces reserved in the drawing room or courtyard.

Opt for the lemon ricotta pancakes for brunch, or the lamb meatball sliders for dinner. Vegetarians and vegans aren’t forgotten here, and the extensive wine list is detailed and superb.

Shibui Spa

The Japanese influence is evident in the spa, not just from its name, but also from its décor.

It’s housed in a 250-year-old bamboo farmhouse that was especially imported from Japan. You can find the spa on the lower ground floor, and it’s really a world away from the outside.

Dim lantern lighting welcomes you the second you step outside the elevator, preparing you mentally for some ultimate unwinding.

This treatment is designed to refine skin texture and de-congest pores, by clarifying and oxygenating the skin. The result is skin that’s deeply moisturized and leaving you with a healthy glow.

Patyka is a luxury French beauty and skincare brand that combines natural ingredients with biotechnological innovations.

It’s a facial unlike any other, and a result you can see, as well as feel.

No 2 rooms are alike? I like it! Your own sauna in the privacy of your room? I love love love that!!!
I'd love to try that Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

    1. Actually no! Greenwich Village is a popular area in the city, and while this hotel isn't in the village, it's not far off. The lemon ricotta pancakes are very good 😀

  19. By the looks of things, you are improving your interior photography. There are full-screen images now, which is really cool. One thing I can recommend to you is to check exposure settings, turn them down, some of the highlights are too bright

  21. Now this looks like my kind of place! I think I'd have to go for that corner suite but it all looks fantastic. It certainly wouldn't have been in my price range when I visited NYC as a student but I would be nice to have a little luxury next time!

    1. Yes! It's definitely more of a place for a little luxury, but sometimes it's necessary when travelling 🙂

  22. New York as well is the birthplace of modern boutique hotels. But how they can have 88 suites in total where no 2 rooms are the same is one hell of a job. Kudos. And the ivy in the courtyard. Seriously impressive.

    1. I know what you mean! The style is so underrated yet chic, and individuality is a big selling point of boutique hotels for me.

Thanks for sharing a great place to stay if visiting NYC.

    1. It is! The location's perfect, and the rooms simply stunning. I hope you check it out the next time you're in NYC.

  28. I wish this place had been happening when I was traveling back and forth to NYC for work (or when I was actually there). Love the restaurant, and really like the idea of a central courtyard. The rooms sound comfortable, and not the size of a stamp (which seemed typical of hotels there). I bet that place is booked solid during the Tribeca Film Festival!! I'd love to check it out!

    1. I'm sure you're right! Plus it's in the right place for all the movie stars who live right around the corner.

  29. Tribeca sounds very much like my kinda place. Whenever I come there I would surely visit the bars, restaurants and coffee shops. The pictures do the talking and the Shibui Spa has definitely stolen my attention. This place will be on my bucket list and hope to bump into some Hollywood stars.

  31. I did consider booking up with this hotel on my last visit to NYC but weren't too sure on it. But other reading this post, I would seriously consider staying here on my next stay to the Big Apple. But on a side not, this is the first time I have come across your blog and loving the photography and layout. Will check out some more posts later on. But back to the hotel, I love the looks of the beds in the rooms and I bet everyone gets a good night's sleep on them. I hate hotels with thin mattresses. :/

    1. Thank you so much! I try my best here on my little blog 🙂 I really enjoyed this gorgeous hotel and wanted to share my experience with others!

  32. This place looks like a great mix of oriental and European style. It's an awesome suggestion. Thank you for sharing.

  33. Both the rooms and the restaurants have excellent ambience. I really liked the interior design of the hotel. The green walls of the courtyard are fascinating. I really liked the way you have mentioned each and every details - an excellent review. Thanks a lot.

  34. I love the mix of the Japanese and European style. I had no idea that The Greenwich Hotel NYC was owned by Robert De Niro! Did you happen to run into any cool celebrities at one of local coffee shops?

    1. I didn't! But I'm terrible at recognising famous faces, so maybe I did, but didn't realise 😀

  35. It's so nice to be able to hear of new places to stay in New York. Love that place, especially Tribeca and Chelsea area. Got married on the High Line so NYC is pretty special. Thanks for the recommendation.

  36. I have not stayed at a hotel in NYC before, so this seems like a great recommendation. It looks charming and relaxing there. Boutique hotels really make your experience in a city special.

  37. What a well-written review! I love how you describe the Greenwich hotel’s charm and decor, especially all those tiny details that one tends to miss. I love me a lavish bathroom and that foliage on the walls is quite lovely. Wonder how they maintain that.

    1. Thank you so much! It's a lovely hotel to write about. The bathroom and mini sauna was incredible, and so unique too.

  38. People ask me for NYC hotel recommendations pretty often and I always end up googling (because why would a local stay in a hotel?) and being horrified by what I find. It's great to see so many boutique hotels opening up and replacing the drab and dated options. It's nice to see there's a lovely courtyard and not an air shaft pretending to be a courtyard!

I'll have to check out the restaurant the next time in town. I'm always on the hunt for a good brunch spot.

    1. The restaurant is great and really affordable too. I hope you can add The Greenwich to the list, as it's a lovely local choice for NYC.

  39. I love the green terrace here, that is such a nice pop of plant-life in a concrete jungle like New York! It is also so cool that Robert de Niro owns part of the hotel, Imagine meeting him one day on your way to breakfast in the morning! Although I would probably spend most of my time my sauna 😉

    1. We didn't see him, just a lot of paparazzi outside the hotel! The spa is incredible; you'd never think it was there.

  40. Very nice hotel. I love those vines crawling/covering over the brick wall. It gives the exterior a "natural" feel. Interiors are nice as well---not overly decorated.

  41. I love staying in boutique hotels as I feel they have a lot more personality than chain hotels. The level of service is also often great. And Greenwich Hotel NYC falls into that category. It looks lovely, so chic and full of positive vibe and a place where I would love to stay!

  42. As beautiful as this place is and I loooove the green space! I would never be able to afford to stay here. ?

  43. I love NYC and I just love this boutique hotel. Unfortunately it's to expensive for me. (I looked it up) But maybe I will check it out, just for the courtyard, when I am back in NYC 🙂 😉

    1. That's ok! It's really a luxury boutique, but if you can, you should try the brunch in the restaurant Locanda Verde; it's very affordable and so good 🙂

  44. Seems like Tribeca is THE place to stay, with swanky boutiques, cafes and restaurants in the area and who would want to give up on the opportunity to spot a celebrity! The Greenwich Hotel's spa appeals to me the most and I can see what you mean by the Japanese influence. I love the name too - Shibui Spa. I like how minimalist the interiors of the hotel are. There's an attention to detail which you can see. Also love the casual feel of the Locanda Verde restaurant and its good that they've opened their doors to the public. I envy you for staying in such lovely boutique hotels, Lisa.

    1. It's a hard job but someone has to do it lol! I feel very lucky to see these stunning hotels, but do keep it in mind if you ever visit NYC. It's so wonderful here, and the spa is incredible.

  45. You know what I'm actually thinking of visiting New York in the fall and this sounds like the perfect place to stay at. I mean, the corner suite is just heaven to me! Plus Tribeca seems like a great location too (you had me at great bars). Definitely looking into their rates now. Thanks for the recommendation!

  46. I travel to NYC at least 4 times a year, so this is perfect for me! I have probably walked past this in the last month and did not even realize it. The courtyard looks like the perfect way to start the day. Definitely going to check this out for my next NYC stay.

    1. Perfect! I'm so sure you'll love it, it's really a stunning boutique in Tribeca 🙂

  47. I love staying in boutique hotels that can't really be defined by any particular style...they have their own individuality. That being said, I love the style of the Greenwich Hotel NYC and would love to stay there! I love the idea of courtyard-facing windows. It would definitely be a nice view to wake up to, especially in downtown NYC. If I ever manage to stay here, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for Mr. DeNiro!

    1. Haha, you must! I didn't see him, though I did see plenty of paparazzi waiting outside the main door. It's a stunning hotel, and somewhere anyone would enjoy!

  48. This hotel looks amazing! I would absolutely love to stay in it sometime! And since I am indulging in such a luxurious place, I might as well pick the 1-bedroom corner suite... It looks like a dream! I am sure that the photos don't do it justice ? I am not much of a spa fan, but for sure I'd love to eat some pancakes in the courtyard. I always enjoy the sound of a city barely heard from a comfortable spot ?

    1. Yes, this is the perfect spot for just that! The 1-bedroom suite is so stunning; it's almost hard to leave!

  49. All the things in the room look so tastefully done, comfortable and yet classy. Looks like you had a great stay!

  50. I've never been to New York but It has always been on my bucket list. Boutique hotels are my favourite, I always to choose boutiques rather than large chains if possible.

    1. You sound like a true flashpacker Leanne! I love staying at boutique hotels, and if you do visit New York, I suggest considering the Greenwich Hotel. The spa is incredible too 😀

  51. This hotel really looks amazing! I love the more luxurious hotels, and this hotel seems to fit my terms when I choose a hotel. Besides this, I haven't heard about this side of NYC.

    1. I love this part of NYC and it's so much more interesting than the touristy parts like Time Square. The hotel is beautiful and maybe you'll consider staying there if you ever visit 🙂

  52. Wow the Greenwich Hotel sounds amazing. I love the mix of oriental and European style. And lemon ricotta pancakes for breakfast? Yum! For me, location is always the most important factor in choosing a hotel and I love the sounds of Tribeca! Its always nice to be in real neighborhood and its sounds fantastic with all its independent boutiques and bars!

    1. I love Tribeca and it feels so local whenever I go back to NYC. The Greenwich Hotel is stunning, and honestly, a gorgeous place to stay for a spot of luxury.
