There’s never a bad time to travel to New York City.
And, when my second favorite season arrives, New York in fall is a pretty time to visit.
It's a great time of year to book a romantic cabin getaway and to cozy up with your significant other.
Fall in New York is also when Central Park fall foliage begins to put on a spellbinding show. It's enough to make you want to stay close to Central Park just to see the changing colors.
When does fall start in New York?
Autumn in NYC officially starts around late September, but the New York fall foliage starts to show from mid-October.
It's when different leaves of varying colors, shapes and sizes begin to blanket the streets of New York. From yellow leafed trees to maple red varieties, fall in NYC is a magnificent sight.
The city, and the state, in autumn is perfect USA bucket list material.

Fall weather in New York is still relatively mild.
A light jacket, or coat with scarf should suffice, and US temperatures are comfortable to explore the city. October and November are good months as you miss the brunt of the harsh, and usually long, New York City winters.

1. Go on a fall bike tour
Good autumn weather conditions in New York City make it ideal for discovering the city on 2 wheels. Central Park Bike Rentals in Manhattan is a good starting point when looking to hire a bike.

With Halloween on the agenda in fall, families can look forward to activities like the spooky pumpkin garden. Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Snug Harbor Botanical Garden are located in Brooklyn and Staten Island respectively.
The former's a 52-acre garden in Brooklyn founded in 1910, which features specialty gardens and an art gallery. They also serve healthy vegetable-based dishes at its two eateries on site: Yellow Magnolia Cafe and Yellow Magnolia Canteen.
Snug Harbor Botanical Garden is part of Sailors’ Snug Harbor. It’s regarded as a National Historic Landmark District given the significant 19th century buildings set in an 83-acre park. The gardens include a Secret Garden, complete with castle and a maze, as well as an authentic walled Chinese garden.

3. See New York City from above
See the transition in season in NYC, and from some of the best viewing points in the city.
While you’ve likely been to the top of the Empire State Building, there’s something special about the views in fall. Look out for sights like Central Park, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, to name but a few.

Get to the 86th floor observation deck to get a 360-degree view of New York and beyond. It’s the highest open-air observatory in the city and a chance to see the setting of many popular films.
The earlier you arrive at the observation deck, the better. Not only are you more likely to miss the crowds, but you also get to enjoy New York at that height.
Be sure to visit on a clear day so you can actually see the surrounding views. From the top, count how many top attractions you can spot from above.

From one landmark to another, the Top of the Rock Observatory is a New York fall favorite.
There are 3 levels of observation decks, but the second and third is where you’ll find the best views. My personal favorite is the third deck on the 70th floor that has an open-air roof deck and no glass enclosure.

Enjoy a 360 experience and a multi-sensory art experience with a ticket to SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. Take in the views from the open-air terrace, almost 335m (1,100ft) above Manhattan.
One of the newest attractions in NYC that'll take you to greater heights is The Edge observation deck. The highest outdoor deck in the western hemisphere, enjoy panoramic views of New York City on a suspended platform.

4. Explore NYC in autumn by foot
There's no getting away from walking around New York and why would you want to? It's the kind of city where walking trumps other modes of transportation and for good reason.
While the metro will take you to your requested stop, exploring New York in fall on foot lets you really discover the different neighborhoods. As long as you’ve got the right walking shoes, you won't even notice how many steps you've done.
There are many fantastic hosted NYC walking tours you can join, and led by locals who know the area best. Discover the trendy meatpacking district, trendy SoHo, or my go-to area of Tribeca.

5. Enjoy New York in fall by boat
Weather pending, I love taking a cruise whenever I’m back in the Big Apple. There’s something about feeling the breeze sweep across your face as you watch the city unfold before you.
There are several cruise tour companies in New York that offer different perspectives of the city.
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises is probably the most well-known, and has been in business since 1945. They have many tours, which includes the ‘Best of NYC Cruise’ ‘Statue by night’ and the Bear Mountain cruise.

The last tour gives you a first-hand look at the yellows and reds of fall along the Hudson River. It also stops at Bear Mountain State Park for 3 hours, where you can enjoy the biking and hiking trails.

Relax on the boat with a glass of champagne or beer (aged 21 and over) while taking in the sights along the New York Harbor.
6. Tour New York in fall by bus
Bus tours have come back into fashion in recent years, and I totally get why. A bus tour is a good way to see a new city, plus it also helps you get your bearings.
The classic Big Bus Tours in New York have been around for forever, and are still a big hit. Its Hop on Hop off bus tour takes you around the city depending on your ticket type. The deluxe ticket is valid for 2 days and includes both a night tour and Brooklyn tour.
There’s also the option to see both New York and Washington DC by bus too. This ticket includes all the sights of New York, along with the capital’s landmarks.

When Harry met Seinfeld bus tour
For a bus tour with a bit of a film twist, you may like the 'When Harry met Seinfeld bus tour’. Essentially, the tour shows the different film locations that you may have seen in some of your favorite movies.
Lasting approximately 2 hours, you’ll discover the lesser known locations from films like Pitch Perfect, and You’ve Got Mail. The bus tour’s ideal for families, and will teach the kids something they probably wouldn’t learn in school.

Where to stay in New York City
Undecided on where to stay in New York in fall? These hotels are both centrally located and are ideal for cozying up to fall weather.

What a rich post! I lived in Buffalo for 10 years and visited NYC many times. If you time it right with the leaves turning, it truly is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the Christmas crowds. As a food and wine lover, you might appreciate the experience I had last week in Basque Country. This area of Spain and France is not only the culinary capital of the world, but is simply gorgeous! If you make it to Europe during Autumn, it's the place I recommend as the best place to visit during that season.

I've been going to NYC at least once a year since I was a kid, and I've never been to the botanical gardens! I usually get my fill of nature at Central Park, but the botanical gardens look beautiful. The view from the Top of the Rock is gorgeous - I haven't done that since high school but on a clear day it's definitely worth it. I love NYC and glad you had a good time there as well!

I love Fall season as it has many colors. There are so many shades in nature and truly New York would look amazing as it has many botanical gardens in the city. I visited NYC in summer and found green gardens, but I can imagine how beautiful they would look in Autumn with all brown and orange shades. You have taken stunning pictures of NYC in Fall. I would love to do all type of tours in NYC, walking, by bus and by ferry.
You have to return again, but in fall. By ferry, or by bus is great, but I always like seeing the city on foot 🙂

The New York botanical gardens look perfect for a fall stroll! They do a spooky pumpkin garden that has some great artists who do the pumpkin carving.

The first photo of Central Park with the beautiful leaves is amazing! I have never heard of taking a canoe trip in Brooklyn. I love that idea. I also think the "When Harry Met Seinfeld" bus tour sounds really cool. We just came back and did the "Ride" bus tour. That was really fun because as you got a tour, dancers and singers performed for you. I'd love to do another kind of bus tour next time I'm there.

I've only been to East Coast USA in the Fall season once and it was glorious, I'd love to visit NY at this time of year. I'd particularly love to see Central Park decked out in the finery of autumn leaves, and of course, the trees throughout the city and further afield.
