Mount Etna tours and experiences

Visiting Mount Etna is of course more than just staying at one of the hotels surrounding it.

Alongside some of the hotels mentioned, there are also independent operators that organize experiences and tours that are worth highlighting.

Here are several excursions that may be of interest while staying at one of these hotels close to Mount Etna. The majority of them have pick-ups/drop-offs from Catania unless stated.

When should I visit Mount Etna?

There’s no one size fits all answer to when is the best time to visit Mount Etna. The right time of year really depends on your interests.

Spring and fall (April to June and September to October (see 'Italy in September' and 'October')) are ideal for hiking and outdoor activities. Temperatures are still mild and clear skies are (usually) the norm.

Instead, December to February are months better suited for travelers interested in skiing or in other winter sports. One of the few places in the world where you can ski on an active volcano, Mount Etna is unique.

While I wouldn’t personally recommend visiting Mount Etna, or Sicily, in summer (July to August), it has its advantages.

For one, the higher elevations of the volcano are typically cooler, providing some much-needed relief from the heat. What’s more, the hot weather is ideal for visiting one of the many beaches and cooling off in the sea.

My guide on when to visit Sicily discusses this topic in greater detail.

How to get to Mount Etna

Hiring a car is typically the quickest and most convenient way to reach these hotels close to Mount Etna.

There are other ways to get around Sicily, such as public transportation, but it can be limited.

Instead, renting a car allows the flexibility to explore the region at your own pace and to customize your itinerary.

Some hotels may offer shuttle services or book Mount Etna excursions for their guests. However, this again may be limiting as you'll have no say over which tour company that they book with.

Is Mount Etna safe to visit?

While Mount Etna is an active volcano, the risk to travelers is minimal and it’s generally considered safe to visit.

However, should you decide to book an excursion, be sure to listen to the guides and follow their instruction.

Stay on marked trails and don't steer away from the group. Wear appropriate clothing, suitable footwear and bring any necessary equipment if you plan to hike.

Should an eruption be predicted on the day of your tour, any excursion would be immediately cancelled.

Final thoughts

Staying at any of these hotels close to Mount Etna is a unique and unforgettable way to visit Sicily.

Not only do they offer beautiful accommodation but they also provide easy access to the volcano and its panoramic views.
