After 10+ years living in Italy, these are the best Italy travel apps permanently on my phone.
They’re useful for navigating Milan's metro, booking a last-minute train from Rome to Florence or ordering a taxi without speaking a word of Italian. The right apps make the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one.
Below are the 21 I actually use, organized by what you need them for.
My top 5 Italy travel apps
If you only download five, make it these.
Google Maps: offline maps, public transport routes and ZTL zone awareness. Download your Italian city maps before you land.
Trainline: the simplest way to book and manage train tickets across Trenitalia and Italo in one place.
Google Translate: use the camera function to translate menus, signs and anything printed. A non-negotiable.
FREENOW: the most reliable taxi app across Italian cities. Shows the price before you book and needs no Italian.
WhatsApp: hotels, restaurants, tour operators and locals all communicate on WhatsApp in Italy. You will need it.

Public transport in Italy, for the most part, is a reliable way to get around many Italian cities.
And the following apps will be helpful for not just getting around Italy, but also for getting around Sicily.
1. Trainline
The Trainline app is one I use to book our trains and buses in Italy.
It’s also helpful for checking train times. Super easy to navigate and a user-friendly design, Trainline is one of the best Italy travel apps to download for your Italy vacation.
What’s more, you can also use Trainline when traveling to other European countries. This means that you’re bound to get plenty of use out of the app for future trips.

2. Trenitalia
Trenitalia is the official app of the state-owned primary train operator in Italy.
Its high-speed rail network consists of the Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca trains. Together, they connect major cities across Italy.
The Trainline app also lets users purchase tickets for intercity and regional trains along with busitalia buses in Umbria and Veneto.
3. Italo
Italo is a privately-owned train operator in Italy. Offering high-speed train services, it competes with Trenitalia’s high-speed services.
Once you purchase train tickets on the Italo app, you’ll receive a QR code to your phone. This is helpful as everything is digital and you’ll have it ready to scan before reaching the platform.

4. Omio
An alternative to using the Trainline app is Omio. Like Trainline, the Omio app will show the different services, schedules and carriers.
Unlike Trainline, Omio also works in the United States and Canada. Its function is slightly more advanced as it also enables users to compare flight and ferry prices all within the app.
I frequently use Omio for its simple interface and functionality in Italy.
5. Moovit
Moovit is a useful app for using public transport in Italy as well as across many other countries.
Choose your destination in Italy, for example, Venice, and discover all the city’s public transport options.
It’s particularly helpful for checking the timetable for the Venice waterbuses (vaporetto).
With Moovit, you can also see train and bus times, and the best bus, train and metro routes to take.

6. FREENOW
FREENOW is an app that allows users to book taxis, along with eScooters and eBikes in 9 European countries.
Because ride-sharing apps work slightly differently in Italy, FREENOW is really one of the best Italy travel apps to download. The app shows the prices beforehand, booking is simple and there’s also no need to speak Italian.

At the time of writing, FREENOW is currently available in Rome, Milan and Turin.*
7. APPTAXI
Feel safe and secure in the hands of certified drivers by downloading the APPTAXI app.
Available in over 25 cities across Italy (including Verona and Florence), the app’s features are impressive.
It enables passengers to know the price estimate of a trip and to locate the taxi on a map. What’s more, users can pay with their credit card in the app, Apple Pay or directly to the driver.
8. Wetaxi
Wetaxi is an app that serves a plethora of functions.
They include booking taxis, buying train tickets and getting public transport tickets in Rome and Milan.
A plus of hiring a taxi on Wetaxi is that it shows customers the guaranteed price fare. This means no hidden charges and riders will know the price beforehand.
Another advantage of downloading the Wetaxi app is availability. Customers can use the app in Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin as well as in over 20 other Italian cities.
9. Ferryhopper
The Ferryhopper app lets customers search and book for ferry services in Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey.
The clear layout helps users to compare ferry prices and timetables and book tickets with no hidden costs.
One of the best Italy travel apps, we regularly check it when booking ferries from Calabria to Sicily.
Does Uber work in Italy?
Yes, Uber works in Italy, but not in the way you're used to at home.
In most countries, Uber connects you with private drivers. In Italy, Uber operates differently.
When you request a ride, Uber dispatches a licensed taxi or an Uber Black car rather than a regular rideshare driver.
This means two things. It's more reliable than it sounds, but it's also more expensive than using a white taxi or a taxi app.
As of 2026, Uber is available in Rome, Milan, Florence and a handful of other major cities. It isn't available in smaller cities or rural areas.
My honest take after 10+ years living here
Uber is a convenient backup if you're already familiar with the app and don't want to learn a new platform. However, it isn't the cheapest or most efficient option.
For most situations, FREENOW or APPTAXI will get you a licensed taxi faster and at a lower price. Best of all, neither requires you to speak Italian.
If you do use Uber in Italy: make sure your app is set to charge in euros rather than your home currency. Selecting your home currency activates a dynamic conversion rate that almost always works against you.
Apps for booking tours in Italy
I’m a big advocate of booking tours in Italy. Prices can vary depending on the type of tour and everything comes in a ready-made package.
Tours are also a great way to visit certain attractions without needing to rent a car in Italy.
10. Viator
Boasting a catalogue of over 300,000+ travel experiences, Viator is a leading name for booking tours.
The Viator app has a ‘manage my booking’ section to help keep track of bookings and to make any changes. On top of this, there’s also a Viator rewards program where users can earn cash rewards when making any booking.
11. Get your Guide
Get your Guide (GYG) is another leading name for booking travel tours.
The Get your Guide app has a wide range of tours in Italy to choose from and at competitive prices. Travel experiences led by local, knowledgeable guides, you can expect nothing but an enjoyable tour when booking with GYG.

12. Booking.com
A company that’s used the world over, Booking.com, for me, is one of the best Italy travel apps to download.
I often use the Booking.com app to book charming Italian B&Bs that you won’t find on other accommodation sites.
The app’s useful for keeping track of your paperless bookings, making changes and contacting the hotel/host.
13. Expedia
The Expedia app makes the perfect all-in-one travel companion, helping users search and book hotels.
It also serves as a flight, car rental and attraction search engine. Members that have the Expedia app save around 15% by booking deals with member prices.
Communication and navigation apps for Italy
14. Waze
Waze is a driving navigation app that helps users reach their destination using real-time road alerts and maps.
It works in Italy and will alert drivers of heavy traffic, roadworks and accidents. One of the best Italy travel apps to download, Waze works wonders if embarking upon an Italy road trip.
However, when using the Waze app in Italy, make sure to attach it to a mobile phone holder. Driving while using a mobile phone is prohibited in Italy and may result in a fine.
One of my biggest pet peeves, it’s one of several things I dislike about living in Italy.
15. Airalo
Airalo is an eSIM that keeps your cellphone connected to the internet when traveling around Italy. There are no roaming fees and it's easy to set up and connect.
The advantage of using an eSIM is that it’s hassle free. It’s simply installed on your device and instantly connects to a mobile network at your destination.
Make sure to activate your eSIM in the Airalo app before you fly so that it's active when you land in Italy.
16. Whatsapp
The Whatsapp messaging app is extremely popular in Italy and everyone I know (including me) has it installed.
Its popularity makes Whatsapp one of the best Italy travel apps to download. Use it to communicate for free with accommodation hosts and even tour guides.
17. Google Maps
The Google Maps app is one of the best Italy travel apps and one I use daily.
Along with helping me find various locations, it’s also helpful for showing if a certain service is open or closed.
18. Microsoft Translator
Unless you plan to learn Italian before your trip, chances are you might need to download a translator app.
With the Microsoft Translator app, users can translate text, speech, images and group conversations for free.
Other useful Italy travel apps
19. Radical Storage
Find the closest storage location to store your luggage with the Radical Storage app.
The app operates in over 500 cities worldwide and usually has locations in convenient places, like train stations.
20. Il Meteo
Get accurate and reliable weather forecasts in Italy with the help of il Meteo app.
Meteo means 'weather forecast' in Italian so users can feel confident they’re getting real-time reporting.
The interactive map option allows users to check the cloud and air pollution levels in cities and towns across Italy.
We used the Meteo app during our 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. A trip that was marred by heavy rainstorms, it was good to check when the weather would finally improve.
21. The Fork
Book reservations at your favorite ristorante, trattoria or osteria in Italy with The Fork app.
Europe’s leading restaurant booking platform, The Fork is one of the best Italy travel apps to download.
Bookings are simple to make, and the app also includes reviews from other diners that’ll help you decide.
Before you download anything
Before you download any of the most popular travel apps to use in Italy, it’s essential to cover the basics.
For one, make sure that you've good WiFi or mobile roaming services activated.
Second, ensure that you’ve packed a portable phone charger or that your cellphone is sufficiently charged before going out. These apps will be redundant if your mobile phone battery is low.
Getting these basics right is a small part of planning your trip to Italy.
Do I need a SIM card for Italy, or is an eSIM better?
Having mobile data in Italy isn't optional, it's what makes every app on this list actually work.
Italy's free public WiFi is patchy at best. You'll find it in some hotels, cafes and stations. However, you can’t rely on it to navigate train connections, call a taxi or use Google Maps in real time.
What you need is a reliable data plan before you land.
Two options
A physical SIM card. Buy a local Italian SIM on arrival, from a TIM, Vodafone or WindTre store in the airport or city center.
Prices are reasonable (around €15* to 25 for 30 days of data), but it takes time to set up. It also requires your passport and means swapping out your existing SIM; something some travelers prefer to avoid.
An eSIM is the simpler option for most visitors. You buy it digitally before you leave home, activate it in minutes and keep your existing number active for calls and texts.
I recommend Airalo. it's what I use myself and point all my readers towards.
An Italy eSIM on Airalo starts at around $5 for 1GB, with larger data packages available for longer trips.
📌 Lisa’s tip: if your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onwards do), go with an eSIM from Airalo and set it up before you board. It takes about 5 minutes and means your apps are ready the moment you land.

Google Maps works reliably across Italy including in major cities, smaller towns and rural areas. The one exception is Venice. The app can struggle with the narrow calli and pedestrian-only routes. For Venice specifically, download your maps offline in advance and consider the satellite view to navigate more accurately.
Uber works in Rome, Milan, Florence and a few other major cities, but it works differently to the UK or US version. Uber dispatches licensed taxis rather than private drivers, which makes it more expensive than using a local taxi app like FREENOW. Outside major cities, Uber is not available.
Trainline is the most practical option as it covers both Trenitalia and Italo in a single app, supports English and is easy to navigate. If you're booking Trenitalia specifically, their own app is reliable. For comparing prices and routes across trains, buses and ferries in one search, Omio is worth downloading too.
You need mobile data to use apps effectively in Italy as public WiFi is unreliable. A local SIM card from TIM, Vodafone or WindTre works well, but an eSIM from Airalo is faster and easier to set up before you leave home. Most smartphones made after 2020 support eSIM.
Yes, and it's very useful if you're driving. Waze gives real-time traffic alerts and, crucially, warns you about ZTL zones. This makes it a better choice than Google Maps for driving in Italian cities.
Trainline is best for English speakers booking both Trenitalia and Italo. The Trenitalia app (for some regional routes) or the Italo app if you're travelling on high-speed routes. Keep your tickets accessible offline, you'll need to show a QR code when onboard.
