Let’s face it, a guide on all the international airports in Italy isn’t exactly the sexiest topic to read about.
But this isn’t going to be a standard list of Italy airports accompanied by their respective Italy airport codes.
In this post, I’ll be listing the major airports in Italy, reasons to arrive/depart there and nearby places to visit.
The guide will also be useful for American visitors as it’ll detail international airports in Italy if coming from the USA.
Airports will be divided into regional sections to help you navigate the post easier. Feel free to skip to the region that best applies to your travel plans.
Use this post to help plan your Italy trip.
How do you say ‘airport’ in Italian?
The Italian word for airport is aeroporto.
What is the best airport in Italy?
There’s no straightforward answer to what the best airport in Italy is.
Having flown in and out of many airports in Italy including Sicily and Sardinia, the answer is wholly subjective.
If pressed for an answer, I’d say that Rome Fiumicino Airport is pretty good. Rome Airport (FCO) is one of the largest international airports in southern Italy and has plenty of shops and amenities.
While it doesn’t match the likes of Singapore’s Changi Airport, it’s one of the top airports in Italy.
International airports in northern Italy
Milan Malpensa Airport
Milan Malpensa Airport (Aeroporto di Milano Malpensa), is the main international airport in Milan Italy. The Milan airport code for Milan Malpensa is MXP.
Milan Airport serves a wide range of international and domestic routes, and it also has direct flights to/from the US. It makes MXP the biggest airport in Milan and one of the busiest international airports in Italy.
Many international passengers tend to fly into Milan Malpensa to visit Milan. The journey by car (or by taxi) takes around 55 minutes, or approximately 32mi (51km).
Places to visit from Milan Malpensa Airport
Travel options are in abundance when arriving at MXP Airport. Alongside visiting Milan, Lake Como is a short distance away and a must for any Italy bucket list. Other nearby destinations also include Bergamo, Brescia and Lake Iseo.
Pros of flying in/out of Milan Malpensa Airport include:
- the availability of long haul and direct international flights
- US passengers can fly directly from New York JFK Airport to Milan Malpensa
- as a major airport in Italy, it’s more equipped to deal with larger numbers of passengers
- plenty of dining, shopping and a large selection of airport lounges
- many companies to choose from if renting a car in Italy
Cons of arriving to/departing from Milan Malpensa include:
- it’s extremely busy, so security/passport waiting times can be long
- some departure gates don’t have places to buy refreshments
- some parts of the terminal building are outdated
Should you have an early morning flight or arrive late at night, consider checking into a hotel near Milan Airport.
Milan Linate Airport
Other Italy airports near Milan include Milan Linate Airport (Aeroporto di Milano Linate), airport code LIN.
The fourth largest Italian airport by passenger volume, it services domestic and short and medium long-haul international flights.
LIN Airport is the closest international airport to Milan’s city center. It’s around a 28-minute drive by car or taxi or 35mins by train and metro.
Places of interest are the same as if arriving to/departing from Milan Malpensa.
Pros of arriving/departing from Milan Linate Airport include:
- a short distance to Milan’s city center (5mi/8km)
- good public transport links
Cons of arriving to/departing from here include:
- Milan Linate Airport may not service your destination
- a smaller airport so lines can build up
Milan Bergamo Airport
Also part of the Milan airports group is Milan Bergamo Airport (Aeroporto Bergamo, Orio al Serio), airport code BGY.
Like Milan Linate, Bergamo Airport also services domestic and short and medium long-haul international flights from low-cost carriers like Ryanair.
Located 3mi (5km) from the city of Bergamo, the center of Milan is slightly further away at around 32mi (52km). By car, this translates to approximately 1hr (not including traffic) or 55mins by bus.
Places of interest from Bergamo Airport are similar to arriving to/departing from Milan Malpensa.
Pros of arriving to/departing from Milan Bergamo Airport include:
- it services many destinations across Europe and just outside
- good connections for visiting Milan or Bergamo
Cons of arriving to/departing from here include:
- long security lines
- understaffed
- poorly managed and disorganized
- departures area closes at night until 3/4am leaving passengers with early morning flights to camp out in arrivals
- lack of adequate seating
- no sockets to charge electronic items. If choosing to depart from BGY airport, be sure to travel with a power bank
Given these reasons, I’d strongly consider departing from Bergamo Airport. Based on many reviews, Italy’s third busiest airport is probably one of the worst international airports in Italy.
Venice Marco Polo Airport
Venice Marco Polo Airport (Aeroporto di Venezia Marco Polo) is one of the busiest international airports in Italy. The closest airport to Venice, the Venice airport code is VCE.
Serving domestic and short and long-haul international flights, it’s rare to find a quiet moment in this Venice Italy airport.
Direct flights from the USA to Venice
US passengers should know that there aren’t many direct flights to Venice from the USA. Instead, VCE Airport has a ‘seasonal schedule’ that serves direct flights from New York JFK to Venezia Marco Polo.
To give an example, for 2024, there’s a seasonal schedule that runs from 11 to 30 March with Delta Airlines. It’s always important to check the website for the most up-to-date information.
Places to visit when arriving/departing from Venice
One of the biggest pluses of arriving in Venice is the choice of surrounding places to visit. The island city of Venice is naturally the biggest draw and is close to reach by bus, boat or taxi. It’s a short and easy journey to reach Piazzale Roma in Venice (around 16mins by car or 22mins by bus).
Other nearby cities and towns to visit from Venice include:

It serves domestic and mainly European destinations and is located around 7.5mi (12km) from Verona’s city center. By car or taxi it will take around 17mins, while taking public transport will set you back around 49mins.
Many of the nearby places to visit from Verona match the list mentioned for Venice — but with one exception. On landing, passengers will see a sign in Verona saying, ‘the gateway to the Dolomites.’
Because of its good highway connections, Verona Airport is ideal for visiting places in the Dolomites. The capoluogo (capital) of Trentino Alto Adige is approximately 1hr 30mins drive from VRN Airport.
At the time of writing, Verona Airport is being expanded to cater for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Taking place in Milano-Cortina, it’ll be interesting to see what changes they are making to the airport.
Pros of arriving to/departing from Verona Airport include:
- good transport links to reach/depart the city center
- affordable short-term parking options
Cons of arriving to/departing here include:
- the current airport terminal is small and lines for check-in/bag drop can be long
- not many drink/dining options
- duty free shopping area is small
Treviso Airport
An alternative to flying into Venice Marco Polo Airport is Treviso Airport (Aeroporto di Treviso – Antonio Canova). The Treviso Airport Code is TSF.
Choosing to arrive in Treviso Airport can be a good choice if searching for cheap flights to Venice Italy.
The distance to reach Venice from Treviso is about 25mi (40.5km). By car, this translates to around 33mins or 1hr 22mins by public transport.
Treviso’s city center is just 9mins by car and it’s a must see, time permitting. Nicknamed ‘mini Venice’, there’s plenty to see and do in Treviso and it’s not as crowded as Venice.
Pros of arriving to/departing from Treviso Airport include:

Cons of arriving to/departing from here include:
