How many days in Sicily?

Last updated on June 18th, 2026.

One of the most common questions I get asked is 'how many days in Sicily should I stay for?'

And it’s a good question given that Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean.

With plenty to see and do, knowing how many days in Sicily to spend is essential when planning a trip.

From 5 days to one week in Sicily, I'll outline what you can realistically see within these time-frames.

Written from a local’s perspective, use this guide to help plan your trip to Italy.

Helpful resources

If a trip to Sicily is on the cards, these travel guides are a helpful starting point.

How to get to Sicily

There are several ways to get to Sicily, the most popular being by plane. The island has 2 international airports and several smaller ones.

Other transport modes include by car from the mainland (see how to get to Sicily from Calabria) or by ferry.

Ferry routes to/from the island travel between Palermo and Naples, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Genoa and Cagliari. Suffice it to say, the ferry route is much longer than by plane but a more scenic way to see Italy.

How many days in Sicily?

One day

Your options are limited if you’ve just one day to spend.

And because of the very short time-frame, I’d recommend seeing one of the Sicilian cities.

For me, Catania is a good option given that most of the city’s main attractions are within the historic center.

We spent one day in Catania and saw plenty during our time here. Another reason why Catania makes a good choice is that Catania Fontanarossa Airport isn’t far from the city center.

Another alternative

If you prefer not to visit a city, the mammoth Mount Etna makes a great alternative. Travel straight to the site of the active volcano from the airport and explore one of Sicily’s most famous landmarks.

One time-saving way to make the most of your one day in Sicily is by booking a Mount Etna tour. These tours arrange everything from transportation to the activities and are typically led by a knowledgeable local guide.

I've rounded up some good Mount Etna tours that highlight the different kinds of activities that are available.

Two days

With two days in Sicily to spare, visiting one of the larger cities is still likely the best option.

We spent 2 full days in Palermo and managed to see most of its top sights. A historic center bigger than Catania’s, having a Palermo itinerary will help you make the most out of your trip.

Some unmissable Palermo attractions to see include:

  • Quattro Canti
  • Kalsa quarter (the Arab quarter)
  • The Norman Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni)
  • Ballarò (food market)

Teatro Massimo (also one of the filming locations of The Godfather in Sicily)

A second option

Another option if you’ve 2 days in Sicily is to visit Taormina.

The popular hilltop town attracts visitors for its views, its pretty town center and Isola Bella.

However, as I outlined in ‘things to know about visiting Taormina’, the town can get extremely busy. Its appearance in The White Lotus TV show elevated Taormina to bucket list status for many foreign visitors.

But, with just 2 days to spare, Taormina makes a sound choice. Practice slow travel by exploring its colorful streets, having an aperitivo at sunset and relaxing on its beaches.

3 to 4 days

Three to four days in Sicily is a decent time-frame to enjoy a fun-filled long weekend.

I suggest again starting your Sicily itinerary in either Palermo or Catania and continuing from there.

From Palermo, there’s the option to tick off a few Palermo day trips with several nearby places.

Mondello, San Vito Lo Capo and Cefalù are places reachable by car or public transport from the Sicilian capital.

From Catania, there’s the option to visit Messina or to take a ferry ride from Milazzo. The port operates daily ferry services (apart from Italian public holidays) to and from the Aeolian Islands.

Lipari is the largest of the group, to which you can book a ferry from Milazzo to Lipari in advance.

An island that’s a mini vacation in its own right there’s plenty of things to do in Lipari.

5 days

If pressed for an answer as to how many days in Sicily is ideal, 5 days would likely be it.

A good time-frame for first-time visitors, 5 days in Sicily also allows for a mix of different activities.

Hire a car if visiting more remote parts and book accommodation and any activities you want to do in advance. Doing these things will ensure that everything will be ready once you arrive for your Sicily trip.

Ideas for 5 days in Sicily

Start your vacation from any of the bigger cities like above or fly in to another airport in Sicily.

Sticking to one side of the island to visit means using your time wisely during your 5 days in Sicily.

For example, beginning your Sicily vacation in Trapani allows more time to explore the west coast. Cities like Marsala and Mazara del Vallo are rich in history plus they have a mouthwatering food and wine scene.

Time permitting, consider continuing along the west coast until you reach Agrigento.

The city on Sicily’s southwest coast is best known for its attraction, the Temple of the Valleys (Valle dei Templi).

We stopped by the site during our Sicily road trip having booked a sunset tour with skip-the-line tickets in advance.

Hands down one of the best things to do in Sicily the archaeological site also makes a perfect Sicily day trip.

1 week

Like above, having 7 days in Sicily allows sufficient time to see a lot of the island.

With a Sicily vacation itinerary in place, you can easily plan what to see and the travel time between places.

My 7-day east Sicily itinerary outlines a day-by-day guide and includes attractions and hotel recommendations.

Scalinata Mariannina Coffa in Noto Sicily
The colorful Scalinata Mariannina Coffa stairs in Noto

Discover magnificent Sicilian baroque architecture in cities like Syracuse and Noto and make time to also visit smaller Sicilian towns.

Castelmola, Savoca, Marzamemi and Ispica are several noteworthy villages to visit.

To experience a taste of the Sicilian coast and beaches, continue south towards Isola delle Correnti.

The second most southern point in Italy, visiting Isola delle Correnti can feel like you’re in an entirely different country.

An alternative to the east coast is 7 days starting in Palermo.

10 days

Not quite 2 weeks but more than 7 days, 10 days in Sicily has a nice ring to it.

And with more days on the island to spare comes more options for travel.

One viable option for a 10-day itinerary is to mix and match a city with a beach location.

Turquoise waters on Favignana Sicily — beautiful islands where Italians vacation
Bathe in the turquoise waters in Favignana

For instance, spend 3 days in Palermo, 1 day in San Vito lo Capo and 1 day in Trapani. From Trapani, you can take a ferry towards the Egadi Islands.

Favignana is the largest of the group and is the archetypal Mediterranean dream. Turquoise blue waters, unspoiled scenery and utter relaxation awaits on its shores.

One of the best honeymoon destinations in Italy, Favignana is loved by many and for good reasons.

2 weeks

Spending two weeks in Sicily is a sweet amount of time to have on the island.

Take to the highway for a 2-week road trip and include both bigger and smaller cities in your itinerary.

Discover some of the best things to do in Noto and things to do in Syracuse and Ortigia.

Also worth adding to your 14-day Sicily itinerary are more inland parts of the island.

The central region is peppered with lesser-visited places like Enna, Gibellina and the pretty town of Cammarata. This region tends to get overlooked for the larger cities and coastal towns because of time restraints.

Another good alternative to a road trip in Sicily is to combine a city and an island break.

Two weeks is ideal for so many reasons.

Not only can you see several destinations during the trip but it also allows for travel time between each one.

1 month

One month in Sicily gives you carte blanche to do anything and (nearly) everything during your vacation.

Practice slow travel by getting to know more about the island. With 4 weeks there’s no need to rush seeing the best attractions. Instead, plan wisely and try out some activities that a shorter time-frame wouldn’t usually allow for.

Try a Sicilian cooking class in Palermo or discover the sights of the magnificent Zingaro Nature Reserve by boat.

Consider renting an apartment or vacation home as opposed to staying in a hotel.

It’ll give you a small taste of what living in Sicily could feel like as well as a different perspective.

Spiaggia dei Conigli on Lampedusa
Island hop your way around the island

Island hopping

With the generous 4-week time-frame, there’s another activity you could consider doing during your vacation in Sicily: island hopping.

It's home to 3 groups of islands plus two standalone islands. They are:

  • Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie): Lipari, Stromboli, Salina, Panarea, Filicudi
  • Egadi Islands (Isole Egadi): Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo
  • Pelagie Islands (Isole Pelagie): Lampedusa, Linosa, Lampione
  • Pantelleria
  • Ustica

Four weeks allows sufficient time to comfortably visit, and to travel between, them. Beautiful islands where Italians vacation, island hopping makes a unique and fun theme for your itinerary.
