5 places to spend Christmas in Sicily

Christmas in Sicily is a unique and special time of year.
It's a holiday that brings together families through food, festivities and a shared cultural heritage.
But what sets Sicily apart from the rest of the country are its warm temperatures. While the northern part of Italy typically experiences single digits in December, Sicily basks in the sunshine.
An island that doesn’t hold back on the festivities, it's a perfect summery alternative to the standard Christmas holiday weather.

What is December like in Sicily?
December in Sicily is a great month to visit.
Activities like sunbathing and swimming in December may be off the table but the empty Sicilian beaches are still accessible.
Popular attractions also tend to be less busy and the low season in general is quieter. I discuss this topic in greater detail in when to visit Sicily?
How hot is Sicily in December?
Sicily doesn’t get that hot in December.
The days are warm and sunny but not to the point where you’re sweating buckets like in July and August.
Sneakers and boots are favored over flip flops and sandals and outerwear is a necessity. Average daily high temperatures can range from 62.6°F (17°C) to 68°F (20°C).
How cold is Sicily in December?
The same can be said for how cold Sicily gets in December.
It’s typically cooler in the early mornings and evenings but it’s not considered cold compared to winter in northern Italy. Average low temperatures can range from 48.2°F (9°C) to 57.2°F (14°C).
Why spend Christmas in Sicily?
Along with the moderate temperatures and fewer crowds, there’s another good reason to celebrate Christmas in Sicily: the food.
Sicilian Christmas food is varied, wholesome and absolutely delicious. Dishes include a fresh salad starter, a meaty pasta main and a sinfully sweet Sicilian dessert.
One of my favorite places to spend Christmas in Italy, the Sicilian food alone is a good enough reason.
5 best places to spend Christmas in Sicily
1. Palermo
The capoluogo (capital) of Sicily and the surrounding province has plenty going on come Christmastime.
Piazza Castelnuovo is home to the city’s Christmas markets, which in the past has attracted over 100 vendors.
Alongside the beautifully decorated streets, Palermo (city and province) puts on several impressive nativity scenes (presepi). One of the most notable in Palermo sits inside the Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina) in the Norman Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni).
The presepe is a popular feature of Christmas in Italy and Sicily has several that are highly regarded.
One such presepe display is in the village of Gangi. Around 1 hour from Palermo, the village puts on an annual live nativity performance called ‘From Nazareth to Bethlehem.’
The performance takes place in the historic center’s ‘stage’ of Gangi’s alleys, stairways, towers and piazzas.
Petralia Sottana
Another notable nativity scene in the province is in the mountain town of Petralia Sottana.
Each year, its presepe, ‘Petralinium in Preasepio’ attracts dozens of visitors to see the town’s impressive model.

December in Palermo
Aside from the Christmas festivities, there are other reasons that make December a good time to visit Palermo.
For one, the city has an abundance of attractions in the historic center, many of which are free to visit. We saw several during our 2 days in Palermo such as Quattro Canti and Monreale Cathedral.
Palermo also makes a great base for traveling to other parts of northern and western Sicily. Places like Mondello, San Vito Lo Capo and Scopello make perfect Palermo day trips.
The last thing worth mentioning about traveling to Palermo in December is the weather. Sunshine is usually forecasted with average highs of around 64.4°F (18°C).
2. Trapani
Continuing down the west coast of Sicily from Palermo is the coastal city of Trapani.
Originally a port city, Trapani is characterized by medieval churches, baroque palaces and historic fortifications.
Like Palermo, there are towns within the province that are renowned for its nativity scenes.
Every December, the town of Custonaci brings together the local community and Sicilian artists for its live nativity performance. Set against a backdrop of historic houses in Grotta Mangiapane, it’s one of the most unique Christmas attractions in Sicily.
Around 1 hour’s drive from Trapani is the town of Castelvetrano.
Known as the City of Olives and Temples, Castelvetrano is also home to the Ancient Greek city of Selinunte. Another Sicilian town known for its living nativity scene, the event usually begins the first week of December.

3. Erice
Kill two birds with one stone by spending Christmas in Sicily in Erice.
One of the most beautiful places in Sicily to see, the hilltop town of Erice celebrates Christmas with a bang.
The event ‘EricèNatale - Il Borgo dei presepi’ hosts Christmas markets, concerts, performances and a nativity scene.
A chance to experience the holidays in one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval villages, consider spending Christmas in Erice.
4. Catania
On the east coast of Sicily is the city of Catania and the surrounding province.
Aside from the top things to do in Catania in 1 day, there are additional activities throughout the Christmas season.
When December arrives in Catania so too do the Christmas markets in the historic center. Selling traditional Catanese items and artisanal products, they’re gifts that you won’t find elsewhere.
Of all the Catania Christmas markets, the most notable is the one located in Via Minoriti. Stalls decked out in a traditional northern European style, it adds a unique Christmassy touch to the Sicilian city.
Caltagirone
Approximately 1 hour by car from Catania is the town of Caltagirone.
One of the most charming towns in Sicily, Caltagirone shines even more at Christmastime. Home to the largest nativity scene in Italy, the scene has 300 characters in a space spanning 400sqm.
Aside from the presepe, Caltagirone also hosts 3 annual Christmas markets.
Located in Piazza Umberto I, Piazza Falcone e Borsellino and Galleria Don Luigi Sturzo, they add the perfect Christmassy addition.
Viagrande
Experience Christmas in Sicily with the grand Mount Etna in the background.
The small town of Viagrande located within Etna Park hosts Christmas markets, concerts and children’s events.
5. Syracuse
Located on the southeast coast of Sicily, the Sicilian city of Syracuse (Siracusa) knows how to celebrate Christmas.
Filled with top sights and attractions, Syracuse is also one of the best places to spend winter in Italy.
Christmas in Syracuse means browsing its Christmas markets, seeing shows and concerts and visiting its unique nativity display.
One of several markets, the Franciscan Christmas Market is located inside the cloister of the Capuchin Friars of Syracuse. Part of the Church of Maria Santissima, goods range from ceramics to sweet treats and much much more.

Cassibile
The other Christmas attraction that the province of Syracuse is known for is its unique nativity scene.
Cassibile, a small town approximately 18 minutes from Syracuse by car, has a display with life-size characters made from papier-mâché.
The characters include a knife grinder, cheesemaker and a blacksmith as well as other intricate details like carpets and beds.
Palazzolo Acreide
Nothing says Christmas is on its way than the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree.
And the town of Palazzolo Acreide has a tradition of lighting up the facade of the basilica of San Sebastiano.
Holding the title of the largest ‘tree’ in Sicily, its spectacular light installation attracts hundreds of visitors every year.
Other Christmas events in Palazzolo Acreide include the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and live nativity performances.
The feast is celebrated with a mass and a procession while respective neighborhoods host their respective presepi.
Sagre in Sicily
Another feature worth noting when visiting December in Sicily are the various ‘sagre’ you may find in several towns.
A sagra is a festival that celebrates the town/region’s gastronomic delicacies. Entrance to the sagre is free but the food and drink isn’t.

- Sagra del maiale e del cinghiale (pork and boar festival), Antillo, Messina
- Sagra della Vastedda Torretta (type of Sicilian bread), Torretta, Palermo
