17 inspiring Italy weekend breaks

Last updated on January 9th, 2026.

Weekend breaks are one of my favorite vacation types.

An enjoyable way to get a taster of a destination, they can be booked in advance or at the last minute.

And in Italy, one of the best ways to experience the country is through a short yet immersive weekend trip.

In this Italy travel guide, I’ll be sharing 17 inspiring Italy weekend breaks. From a romantic escapade to an Italian food-filled 2 days, these ideas are perfect if looking for weekend trip ideas.

The trips in this post work on the premise of booking a long weekend (3 nights and 2 days). Some of them can also work for 4 nights and 3 days.

Great ideas to add to your Italy bucket list use this post to help plan your Italy trip.

Italy weekend breaks in northern Italy

Fly into the north of Italy to enjoy one of these fun Italy weekend trips.

1. Art and shopping in Milan

Plan a weekend of shopping and gallery hopping on a weekend break in Milan.

The fashion capital of Italy is overflowing with plenty of places to shop. With a good mix of affordable and designer stores it’s an Italy weekend break that (hopefully) won’t break the bank.

Some of the top shopping areas in Milan include:

  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (shopping center)
  • Corso Vittorio Emanuele II
  • Corso Venezia
  • Corso Buenos Aires
  • Via Torino

Two days in Milan will limit the number of art galleries that you can realistically see in a weekend. Saying that, pick the one that tops your must-see list. Below are some popular galleries to consider visiting.

  • Brera art gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera) (historic art), Via Brera, 28
  • Ma-Ec Gallery (modern art), Palazzo Durini di Monza, Via Santa Maria Valle, 2
  • ART MALL MILANO (cool, alternative art), Via Torino, 64
  • (Red Bridge Art Gallery) Galleria d'Arte Ponte Rosso, Via Brera, 2

Good for: girls’ weekend, bachelorette weekend, culture weekend

2. Nature and scenery at Lake Como

A destination synonymous with relaxation and nature, Lake Como is one of my favorite Italy weekend breaks.

We spent 3 days in Lake Como and saw plenty throughout our trip. Along with visiting towns like Bellagio and Varenna, we also discovered lesser-known spots like Lenno and Sorico.

Book tickets to see the picturesque Villa del Balbianello, take a ferry ride across the lake and enjoy the views.

With plenty of ways to get from Milan to Lake Como, the romantic lake is easily accessible from the city.

3. Bacari hopping in Venice

Spend the weekend in Venice sampling one of the city’s, and the wider region’s, favorite foods. Cicchetti is a selection of hot and cold small bites served in many ‘bacari’ located around Venice.

9. A medieval getaway in Siena

Siena is a city designed for a long weekend break in Italy. Its historic center is small enough to explore fully, a feature which makes it ideal for slow travelers.

Signs of Siena’s medieval past is evident as you further explore the city. At its heart is Piazza del Duomo, the grand square home to the jaw-dropping 13th century Siena Cathedral. Tickets for the cathedral are required to enter but it’s 100% worth seeing while visiting Siena.
